From Father Larry

It’s an exciting and challenging time here at Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish! Here are a few things that we’ve been working on:

• Our school, Divine Mercy Academy, has been celebrating Catholic Schools Week this week, and they’ve been publicizing a lot of fun activities for the students! Please keep the students, faculty, and staff of Divine Mercy Academy in your prayers!

• As we look forward, we see that St Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching! This year, it falls on a Sunday. As you look through this bulletin, you’ll see that we’re inviting married couples to share photos of themselves – perhaps your own wedding photo, or a photo of you today, holding your wedding photo! – to give us the opportunity to celebrate your anniversaries this year! In addition, at our Masses on Valentine’s Day, we’ll offer a special blessing for all married couples attending in-person and through our livestream!

• Ash Wednesday falls on February 17 this year. Our schedule at CDS includes a Mass in Monroeville, a Mass in Penn Hills, and an evening Liturgy of the Word. We expect that there may be a larger-than-normal number of “walk-in” attendees, so if you’d like to participate in one of our liturgies, please ensure that we “save a seat” for you by signing up at cdsmph.org/rsvp or by calling our office at 412-373-0050 between 10am and 1pm on weekdays!

• Our Resource Planning Advisory Committee continues its diligent work of discerning how we might utilize our resources in the best way possible, in order to ensure that our parish is on firm financial footing and is sustainable in the long term! This week, they’re meeting with Fr Thom, myself, and diocesan representatives, to review the results of their visits to each of our parish buildings, and discuss their impressions of how we might create an environment that allows us stabilize our situation and position ourselves for future growth. (The next step after that will be a joint meeting of our pastoral and finance councils, to discuss this information. Then, early this Spring, we hope to hold a parish assembly, at which we’ll invite you to participate so that we can discuss our situation and plans, and provide your input in the process.) One of the important questions that we are attempting to discern in this process is how to utilize our resources – buildings, programs, liturgies, staff – in order to improve our ability to serve our community through ministry and evangelization. Please keep this committee, our councils, and our parish leadership team in your prayers!

Please continue to support our parish through your prayers and generosity! Christ the Divine Shepherd, have mercy on us! St Bartholomew, St Bernadette, St Gerard Majella, St John de Brebeuf and companions (the North American martyrs), St Michael, and St Susanna, pray for us!

Blessings,

Fr Larry

We invite you to email us a picture of you from your wedding, or have your family take a photo of you holding your picture and include in the email the number of years married. We will post them to our website. Since the Diocese had to suspend its annual Golden Wedding celebration at the cathedral, we want to especially highlight those who are married 50 years or MORE!

Ash Wednesday Notes

Ash Wednesday is not a Holyday of Obligation, nor is the reception of ashes required of Catholics. Still, attendance at a Mass or Liturgy on Ash Wednesday is a dearly-held tradition of many Catholics. At Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish, we will conduct a number of liturgies on Ash Wednesday (February 17, 2021), in order to allow the faithful to gather for prayer and the distribution of ashes.

Recently, the Holy See in Rome addressed the question of the method of the distribution of ashes for 2021 on Ash Wednesday. They made a couple of modifications for this year, in light of the pandemic: • Here in America, we’re accustomed to receiving ashes on our forehead, in the form of a cross. Elsewhere

in the world (including in Rome!), ashes are sprinkled directly on the head on Ash Wednesday. This is an approach that is ancient in its origins, and is found in the Bible:

“Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth upon their heads.” (Nehemiah 9:1)

“Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long tunic in which she was clothed. Then, putting her hands to her head, she went away crying loudly.” (2 Samuel 13:19)

In baptism, we are washed clean from original sin and anointed as “priest, prophet, and king” on the top of our head. It is fitting that ashes, a reminder of our sin and of baptism into death, be sprinkled on the crown of our heads, because at Easter, we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, the conquering of sin and death, and baptism into life.

This year, ashes will be sprinkled on the top of the head. We would ask that, as you approach the

minister, you bow your head so as to allow the sprinkling of ashes.

• Typically, as the ashes are being imposed on each person, the minister says “repent and believe in the Gospel” or “remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” This year, the minister will pronounce this reminder once, to the entire congregation – prior to the beginning of the distribution of ashes – and will distribute ashes in silence.

FEAST OF FAITH: The Gloria

The Gloria, or Glory to God, follows the penitential rite. Both are acts of praise. In the penitential rite, we sing of the mercy of Christ. In the Gloria we praise God’s saving action in the universe. The Gloria is a relatively late addition to the Mass. It first appeared in the Roman liturgy in the sixth century, and then it was sung only by the pope—and only on Christmas! With time, the hymn came to be sung by bishops on major feasts, and then by priests; finally, it became

the song of the entire assembly. With the advent of more elaborate musical settings, the people gradually stopped singing the Gloria, until this song of the people became the exclusive domain of the priest and the choir. But the

liturgical reforms have restored it to its place as primarily the song of the assembly. The language of the Gloria echoes the New Testament canticles. It may be begun by the priest, the cantor, and the entire assembly in varied

combinations. The Gloria is sometimes called the “greater doxology,” and in some ways it is like an extended, ecstatic version of the familiar doxology (“Glory be to the Father”) prayed in the Divine Office and the rosary.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

I confess to almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessed Mary—ever virgin—all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Homily

Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Spiritual Communion Prayer My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I de-
