IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS

The Catholic Community of North Harbour

The Sunday readings call to mind Pope Francis’ strong advice that priests and leaders of the church must be shepherds who smell like sheep. The Scriptures remind us that the shepherd shall bring peace and justice to his people, shall reconcile differences, unite all peoples and teach, minister and serve God’s people with compassion that mirrors God’s own

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Australia is a country that is not used to the idea of shepherds. For a short time in our European history convicts or Emancipists were pressed into service to carry out this age old task. But with the coming of wire fencing to contain our large properties such a task faded from importance and the job was given to drovers and their dogs. We became the land of the ‘long paddock’, a historic web of stock routes linking areas of inland NSW and Queensland with emerging markets in Victoria. These broad passage ways of crown land also provided an escape from drought when the seasons failed. The Long Paddock still provides us with a link to times and landscapes that have long since altered.

What has not changed is a tendency in our national psyche to be suspicious of anyone in authority, stemming from an unwillingness to hand over our hard won independence to representatives who may let us down. In other words, we find an inherent difficulty in being shepherded. And yet, it is this method of governing the people that becomes the main topic for today’s Readings. The task of Shepherding is used to describe the special quality of “caring and protecting of each one” shown by God who tells us “I myself will gather them; no fear, no terror for them anymore; not one shall be lost – it is the Lord who speaks”. Jesus continues this theme in the Gospel where “He took pity on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he set to teach them at some length”.

Only once in our history since colonization have we as a Church had the chance to experience a particular style of his’ teaching us at some length’ when in 1885 what is known as the First Plenary Council was held in Sydney where representatives of all dioceses of that time were gathered to take stock of what it meant to be the Catholic Presence in this great south land. It has taken 80 years and a number of seismic challenges to cause us to once more use this ‘stock route’ to discover and discern, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the future course of the Church in Australia.

As a way of preparing for the Second Plenary Council to be held in 2020, each of us as members of this Diocese of Broken Bay are being invited to set out on a journey of listening, dialogue and prayer to discern how the Catholic Church and its leaders can best witness to the following of Jesus in our contemporary society. These next few months will be an opportunity for us as God’s people to name those issues that are important to our faith, and to share perspectives on how we see God shepherding us as members of his flock. A team of facilitators or ‘animators’, (drawn from both our local schools and church communities) will receive training in how to organize various ‘Local Gatherings’ in our parish Centre so that all Catholics, whether devout or disillusioned, fervent or frustrated, may seize this opportunity to speak what is on their minds and in their hearts and be united as a single body, attentive to the guidance of our Good Shepherd
