DECEMBER 10, 2017 — 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 3
Second Sunday of Advent Prepare the Way of the Lord
Eagerness. Today’s readings combine to tell a story of eagerness—enthusiasm, zeal, wholehearted dedication. Eager anticipation is not a surprising topic for the Advent season, but very surprising, perhaps, is what our readings urge us to be eager about: the cleansing of sins. Isaiah tells God’s people to cry out loudly, proclaiming that the Lord will come with power to comfort them and forgive all their sins. Saint Peter inspires us to “be eager to be found without spot or blemish.” In Mark’s Gospel, people from all over stream to the Jordan, acknowledging their sins and repenting. John the Baptist preaches the mighty power of the Lamb of God, who takes away our sin. Today’s readings wake us up, reminding us how great God is. May we eagerly seek the powerful peace that God’s forgiveness brings.
Saint Peter shows us a characteristic of God that we normally do not think about. He tells us that for God, “a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day” (1 Peter 3:8). Somehow, God is not restricted by time as we are. Taken literally, that seems to violate the laws of physics. Of course, God made those laws, so if anyone can ignore them, God certainly could. More likely, because early Christians sometimes complained that Jesus’ second coming had been delayed, Peter is trying to tell us that what seems like a long time to us is nothing to God.
Like the early Christians, we may wonder how long it will take for God to answer our prayers. We may be praying for someone who is looking for a job, a sick relative, an end to abortion, or world peace. Some prayers just take time to be answered, especially if a large number of people need to change their hearts to make it happen. Some prayers require us to change, and we may not be ready.
What Peter means is that a thousand years is not too long for God if someone needs that long to repent. God is far more patient than we are. If someone had been fighting me for months or years, I would probably give up on them. But God can wait till we are mature enough to face our sins and be sorry for them. In the same way, God has been “waiting” over two thousand years for us to preach the gospel to all nations. God has been waiting for millennia for people to give up war as a means for solving our problems. God has been waiting since the beginning of the human race for us to learn how to love our neighbor.
We might not be as patient as God but we can help. Saint Peter says that we are not just waiting for the Lord’s return, we are hastening it. When we make a choice that is based on faith rather than selfishness, we make it a little easier for people to believe in God. Jesus is the light of the world; he asks us to let our light shine, so that people can see Jesus in us. May our light “prepare the way of the Lord” (Mark 1:3). Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Renew My Church Update On Sunday, December 3, the discernment team from St. Peter’s met for their final meeting with the other discernment teams in the Lakes Region. Early in January, an Archdiocesan Commission will meet to review feedback given by the discernment teams, and will propose a recommendation for the Lakes Region to Cardinal Cupich for approval. Once a decision has been made, the Lakes Region will hold a meeting for all parishioners in the grouping to hear the announcement. There is not a date for this at this time, but it’s expected to be mid to late January. Please watch the bulletin for the date, time, and location of the Lakes Region meeting. Because of this regional parish meeting, we will not be having a St. Peter’s parish-wide meeting before the Renew My Church announcement is made.
Please pray for the Archdiocesan Commission and Cardinal Cupich in this discernment process. Also, please continue your prayers for the entire Renew My Church process in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many people think that Saint Francis originated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, figurines of villagers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very dramatic presentation. If you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depiction is presepio, from the Latin word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Waldo? children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, God-with-us! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DECEMBER 10, 2017 — 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 9
Formation & Education From The Desk Of Kari Leaf
At the beginning of Advent I started reading a book called Joy to the World--How Christ’s Coming Changed Everything (And Still Does) by Scott Hahn. Below is an excerpt from the book that I found interesting:
The Christmas story has an unconventional hero-not a warrior, not a worldly conqueror, not an individual at all, but rather a family. The details of the story always lead us back to that fact. We see the swaddling bands and know they’re for a baby, but someone had to do the swaddling. So we have a mother and a child. We have a father. We have a household. We hear tell of the manger-crib where he lay, but someone needed to place him there. We read of the child’s exile in Egypt, but someone had to take him there-someone had to protect him from brigands along the desert roads-and someone had to work hard to support the mother and baby in a foreign land.
The scenes of Jesus’ early life-Mary’s crisis pregnancy, Joseph’s provident decisions, Herod’s perse-cution-are dramatic precisely because they involve the intersection of so many individual lives. In-deed, the other details of the story derive their meaning from the Gospel’s primary focus on the fam-ily: the Holy Family. The evil king Herod is clearly anti-family, anti-child--murdering Bethlehem’s offspring, devouring them. History tells us that King Herod slaughtered his own sons, and the Gospel shows him commanding his soldiers to turn their swords upon the children of Bethlehem.
The family is the key to Christmas. The family is the key to Christianity. Pope Saint John Paul II noted that everything good—history, humanity, salvation—“passes by way of the family.” When God came to save us, he made salvation inseparable from the family life, manifest in family life. Since the family is the ordinary setting of human life, he came to share it, redeem it, and perfect it. He made it an image of sacrament of divine mystery. Salvation itself finds meaning only in familial relations.
The truth of Christmas begins with a family. The events turned historically on the decisions of hus-band and father, a wife and mother. We know these events only because that mother pondered them in her heart and chose to share them with her son’s disciples (Luke 2:19, 51) The truth of Christmas was passed by way of families.
What are you passing along to your family this holiday season? Is it about the gifts, the sugary cookies, and the huge meals? Or, is Christmas about family? Is Christmas about the Holy Family that brought salvation to the world? I think we should all ponder that in our hearts this Advent season.
God Bless, Mrs. Kari Leaf
