Many moons ago, I recall being with
my brother in Mile High Stadium awaiting
the arrival of Pope John Paul II during World
Youth Day. We were traveling with a group
from the University of Wyoming and we
literally had our seats against the back
wall of the upper deck. We could not have
been further from the pope if we tried.
But yet I’ll never forget his entrance.
When he joined us in the stadium, it was
electric.
As we gather together for Mass this
weekend, it feels like change is in the air.
The weather is growing colder. Our children
are back in school. The leaves are turning
colors. And the Packers season starts once
again. New life and the change that comes
with it seems to be all around us. But new
life can be both exhilarating and scary.
Who will my teacher be? Will I know any of
my classmates? Will the Packers once again
have their hopes dashed due to their purple
nemesis from the west?
In our Gospel today, Jesus reminds
us that where two or three are gathered in
His name, He is there with us. I’m certain
that is what I experienced when I was with
my brother in Denver. I don’t know how
many of us were in the stadium – 80,000?
Definitely more than two or three – but we
all most certainly were gathered in Christ’s
name. We knew He was present. One could
sense it. And in that moment, we all knew
we were a part of Him.
I suspect that what I’m saying here is
not new to anyone reading this. We’ve all
been a part of crowds and felt their energy –
both for good and ill. I believe the key
question here is, when we gather together
with others – in whose name and for what
purpose do we gather?
Crowds at football games can do
much good for the home team. One can
leave a game feeling excited and filled with
joy. Classrooms with good instructors and
leaders can do much to challenge the students
within – all feeling a part of something and
walking together towards a common goal.
Yet at the same time, crowds can
be destructive. We’ve witnessed that just
recently at the riots in Charlottesville,
Virginia. We may not have to go that far.
Some of us, perhaps, may have been bullied
when we were younger – inviting us to
question ourselves and stunt our growth.
Crowds can be a blessing or a curse.
To me and my thinking, the issue isn’t in
the nature of crowds itself. Rather, it’s in
whose name the crowd is gathered. Christ
promises us that when we gather in His
name, He is present there too. And that’s
when the Kingdom of God can be built.
That’s when miracles can happen. That’s
when we can feel the electricity.
Readings for the Week
Monday Col 1:24—2:3/Lk 6:6-11
Tuesday Col 2:6-15/Lk 6:12-19
Wednesday Col 3:1-11/Lk 6:20-26
Thursday Nm 21:4b-9/Phil 2:6-11/Jn 3:13-17
Friday 1 Tm 1:1-2, 12-17/Jn 19:25-27
Saturday 1 Tm 1:15-17/Lk 6:43-49
Sunday Sir 27:30—28:7/Rom 14:7-9/Mt 18:21-34
Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “As God has forgiven our sins, so we must forgive others.” Next week’s Gospel reminds us that God freely and generously pours out his love and forgiveness upon us through our faith in Jesus and the sacraments of the Church. These gifts are given to us, not only for our salvation, but so we may share them with others, and so peace may be built up more fully in the world.
Cup O’ Joe
Weekly Reflections by Joseph Zenk, Pastoral Leader
Email Bible Study
Are you interested in being part of a bible study – but don’t have the time to meet weekly? Check this out…
This fall, we will have a six-week study on the book of Ecclesiastes. Every week, beginning the week of Octo-ber 2, Joe Zenk will send out the assigned reading for that week along with a number of questions for you to answer on your own. You won’t have to share them with anyone else if you do not wish to as they are for your own spiritual growth. Then, at the end of the six weeks, the group is invited together to discuss their thoughts from the book we’ve read. Don’t want to come to this gathering? You don’t have to. It’s that easy.
Interested? Sign up through Laura, Sue or Kim in our parish offices. Either call or send them an email. Look for your first email assignment the week of October 2.

During the post-weekend sessions, which will be held in Green Bay, the weekend technique is further developed and combined with addi-tional tools to explore other areas of the marriage rela-tionship. For confidential information about or to regis-ter for the program beginning with a weekend retreat in the Escanaba area Sept. 29 through Oct. 1, 2017, please call (414) 502-7685, email: [email protected] or visit our website at http://www.HelpOurMarriage.com
