September 7th- Feast of Saint Cloud

Born in 522, Saint Cloud was the grandson of Clovis, founder of the Kingdom of the Franks, and his wife St. Clothilde. After his parents died, St. Cloud and his two brothers were raised by their widowed grandmother until their uncles, trying to gain the throne, attempted to kill them. The two brothers were killed but Saint Cloud escaped and sought sanctuary with the Bishop of Rheims just outside Paris. From age 5 until 18 he grew closer to God through the practice of silence and solitude guided b Bishop Rheims and later Saint Severin, a hermit. At age 20, Saint Cloud appeared before the Bishop of Paris clothed in royal robes with a scissors in one hand and a coarse garment in the other. He stripped off his royal robes and offered the coarse garment to the bishop, who clothed him. With the scissors the bishop then cut off St. Cloud’s long hair. St. Cloud had given up being prince and heir to the throne for a life of spiritual riches. After St. Severin died, St. Cloud left Paris to find Solitude deeper in the forest. He sought silence to communicate more intimately with God in praying for the needs of people. God answered his prayers in a strange sort of way by sending people out to find him, first by the hundreds then the thousands as the people learned he had the gift of healing the bodies and souls of those who believed in Jesus. His was a ministry of reconciliation, restoring ailing bodies, broken hearts and wounded souls. In 551 the people urged Eusebius, Bishop to Paris, to ordain the hermit prince so he could consecrate the Holy Eucharist. This is why the statue of St. Cloud depicts him holding a chalice. St. Cloud later became the pastor of a small village named after him that is now a suburb of Paris. http://www.stmarystcloud.org/st-cloud-shine

The Statue of Saint Cloud If you would like to see a statue of St. Cloud, there is one at the St. Cloud Hospital just around the corner from the gift shop, or visit the Shrine of St. Cloud at St. Mary’s Cathedral which was given to Bishop Joseph Bursch in 1922 when he attended the cele-bration of the birth of St. Cloud in France. The shrine includes a major relic of St. Cloud (bone Fragment) and one holding a piece of St. Cloud’s Clothing. There is also a relic of the venerated Cross of Christ. Two wood reliefs on each side of the statue show the Bishop of Rheims and St. Clothilde.
