TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Why is it still Easter? The lilies have long since faded. The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord’s Day among our ancestors in the faith was “The Eighth Day,” meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That’s why it is still Easter! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

News from SVdP: We received 20 phone calls in April and were able to assist 13 families. Two families needed help with their rent, with one family receiving assistance in the amount of $782.90 and the other $642.00 to use toward rent. Ten families requested help with their utility bills, with each family receiving an average of $311 worth of assistance. Three of the above families also received an average of $44 worth of food from our pantry and from Kroger. We had one family who only needed help with food and they received $50 worth from our food pantry and $50 worth of food from Kroger. Just one of many stories … Jean, 50 years old and a divorced mother of three adult daughters moved back to the Memphis area after she lost everything she had due to Hurricane Harvey in 2017. She had been living in her car until gaining custody of a teenage neighbor girl over the past few weeks. In order to care for the child, Jean moved into a small apartment in a long-term motel. Because Jean cannot work due to heart condition, she receives SSI and food stamps. Needless to say, the SSI doesn’t begin to cover her expenses, so she has taken out numerous title loans. The cost of her lodging alone is almost $1000. Jean called the Nativity Conference last week. We were able to assist her with $211 toward her past due rent and $429.77 to pay for one extra week at the motel. We were now low on funds. We contacted the other SVdP conferences in Memphis and asked if any of them could help us pay the extra $500 Jean needed to pay to stay her small apartment until June. Thankfully, two conferences were able to give us $250 each (We call that “Twinning”.) Jean, who is now caring for another teenage girl has stable housing through June 4th. Jean contacted me a couple of days later to say she had found a two bedroom house to rent in Brighton and will be moving there in a month. God is Good!

THE GIFT OF PEACE “There arose no little dissension and debate.” Did that happen at work this week? Most of us can recall run-ins with coworkers, even with the boss. Did it happen while socializing with friends? Go easy on politics, religion . . . even sports. At home? Even the most peaceful household experiences a little “give and take” now and then. So where was it that “there arose no little dissension and de-bate”? That tumultuous conflict occurred among our first Christian ancestors, disrupting the community life of the early church. But today’s Acts of the Apostles shows how beautifully the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in today’s Gospel, helped the church achieve a grace-filled resolu-tion. What evolved was that “reconciled diversity,” often encouraged by Pope Francis and even envisioned in to-day’s Revelation passage; and a wondrous experience of Jesus’ promised Gospel gift: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

To All Ministry Leaders and Nativity Groups: We are a growing and vibrant Parish Community and I ask this special request of you. Please remember that we are a family of worship and share our God given gifts and church space to-gether. And as we continually grow in our ministries, I ask that group leaders please submit your yearly calen-dar by email or in writing to Angie O’Neill . We have limited meeting spaces that fill up very quickly and it is most appreciated if all will communicate by email with angie.oneill @nativity.cdom.org for scheduling all events. The Office Calendar is the Official Church Calendar. If there are conflicts in dates and times, we hope all of you are willing to work together to coordinate usage of our building and grounds. Thank you for your patience and understanding and for working together as a very large and faithful family. May God continue to bless each of us and the work we do as The Catholic Church of the Nativity. Fr. Robert
