MAY 13, 2012 ~ 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ MOTHER’S DAY

Thoughts For The Week Dear Sisters and Brothers,

We are frequently reminded about healthy eating.

We’re told, “You become what you eat.” If we eat healthy

foods, we develop healthy bodies. If we eat junk food, we

have a good chance of becoming unhealthy. Food can

become a weapon in the armoury of the advertisers: they try

to sell us food to make us fit; food to make us slim; food to

make us beautiful. The old saying goes, “An apple a day

keeps the doctor away.” It’s true that certain foods are

conducive to long life. If we eat and drink with this in mind,

we stack the odds in favour of a long and happy life.

While there may be elements of truth in all of this in

regard to our physical life, Jesus leads us to a new level of

understanding. “If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of

Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.” Life

here means our life of faith, our life in relationship with God,

who loves us and comes to make a home in us when we

keep the commandments. In St. John’s Gospel Lesson for

today, Jesus promises eternal life to those who believe in

him, and the abiding reminder of this promise is in the

Eucharist: “the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life

of the world”.

So while we are aware of the importance of what we

eat and drink, our faith shows us how to fulfil our longing

for eternal life: by receiving the body and blood of Jesus

Christ in Holy Communion.

What is more, today’s Scripture Lessons remind us

that our longing for eternal life will be fulfilled through our

covenant relationship with God. Salvation is not simply

God’s free gift to us with no strings attached. God’s people

were moulded as a people through their common experience

of the Exodus. The high point of this experience was their

being given and receiving the Ten Commandments: God

promised to be their God; they promised to obey, and their

agreement was sealed in the blood of the sacrifice.

For us, our journey to the promised land of heaven

builds on the same covenant relationship with God. The

Passover meal celebrated by Jesus at the Last Supper brings

this relationship to a new level. God’s word of love is

written not on tablets of stone but on the wood of the cross.

The blood of the new and eternal covenant is the blood of

Jesus poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. This is

God’s free gift to us, which requires our “Amen”. We are no

longer sprinkled with the blood of a sacrificed animal; we eat

and drink the body and blood of the Lord. Our “Amen”

declares our commitment to this new and eternal covenant.

Our Communion brings about our reconciliation with God

and with all who are in union with God. We belong to God’s

new people, the Church, and we are committed to the new

commandment of Jesus, that we are to love one another just

as he has loved us.

Our life depends on what we eat and what we drink.

God uses this common experience to lead us to hunger and

thirst for life that is eternal. We long for salvation, to be

rescued from death and to be brought to eternal life. The

whole story of the Bible is the story of God who satisfies the

hunger of the human heart for life. It’s a story that unfolds

slowly through the history of God’s Chosen People, the

Israelites. It’s a story that reaches a climax in the birth and

life, death and resurrection of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. It’s a

story that spreads out to embrace every generation, every

nation, every man, woman and child. It is the story of God

who “loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so

that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may

have eternal life”. The food of eternal life is the bread and

wine that Jesus gives: “This is my body< This is my blood.”

Our “Amen” is our commitment to the new and

eternal covenant, our desire to be united with Jesus, both

here in this world and throughout eternity. It expresses our

faith that we are eating and drinking the food that nourishes

us for eternal life.

In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—visit

them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who

have wandered from the faith, and all who have died. May

God always be pleased with us!

Blood Drive

Theresa Mayewski & Edith Pena

Twice a year, St. Ann’s sponsors a blood drive in conjunction with NJ Blood Service. The blood drives help ensure that

those who need blood have an adequate and safe supply available. Nine out of ten of us will need blood or blood products

at some point in our lives! The St. Ann Blood Drive insures that the blood needs of our parishioners will be covered. We

need volunteers for sign-ups, phone calling, baking, set-up, serving and clean-up on the day of the drive. Our next drive is

scheduled for August 12, 2012.

made in advance and new parents are required to take a Baptism

Preparation class held on the second Saturday of each month at

A Graduation Prayer

I have knowledge, so will You show me now,

how to use it wisely and find a way somehow

to make the world I live in a little better place, and make

life with its problems a little bit easier to face.

Grant me faith and courage and put purpose in my days,

and show me how to serve Thee in effective ways.

So my education, my knowledge and my skill may find

their true fulfillment as I learn to do Thy will.

And may I ever be aware in everything I do,

that knowledge comes from learning, and wisdom

comes from You. Amen.

Farewell to a Happy School Year

During the coming week, our teachers and school children

will be busy completing their final lessons and tidying up

school books and other materials they will use in September.

On Monday, they will have a Moving-Up Day. They will be

greeted by next year's homeroom teacher and given some

information regarding their methods as well as classroom

rules. They will also receive some Summer Review materials

plus some books they will be asked to read during their

summer vacation.

We wish our students a safe, restful, and enjoyable Season.

We remind them to pray every morning and evening and to

attend Holy Mass every Sunday, and on August 15th, the

Holy Day of Obligation - the Feast of the Assumption of the

Blessed Mother into Heaven.

Sincerely,

Your Teachers

St. Ann 6th & 7th grade Girl Scouts are pursing their Silver

Award, the highest award that Cadet’s can earn. A key step is

choosing an issue and learning about and using various forms

of media to raise awareness about the issue. Members of the

troop were inspired Fr. Edmund’s recent anniversary of his life

saving heart transplant. As the girls researched, they learned

that a one donor can support 50 or more people’s needs, but 18

people die each day waiting for a transplant. They realized that

over 40% of those waiting for transplants are under 49 years old

and many are kids. The Scouts will coordinate an awareness

booth at FESTA. Their goal is to register 50 new organ

donors. Please come out to support their efforts. Or visit

St. Ann’s School Face book page to request more information

about becoming a donor.
