Youth Group Kickoff
September 17
All youth of the parish (13-18 years old) are in-
vited to Ice Skating at Memorial City Mall from
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. This will kick off the year of
social events and service opportunities to help
our youth forge Christ-filled friendships and aid
in building up the Kingdom. Each youth will be
responsible for getting to Memorial City Mall
(303 Memorial City Way, Suite 902, Houston,
TX 77024) and the cost of skate rentals. Please

Treble Choir Registration!
We are excited to announce that Treble Choir Registration is open for the 2017 - 2018 season! Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday afternoons,
beginning September 12.
Grades 3-6 rehearse 4:00 - 5:15 pm Grades 7-10 rehearse 5:00 - 6:15 pm
The season kicks off on Saturday, September 9 with a Choir Camp Day, 9-12 pm.

If you want a better understanding of our faith, and a
deeper relationship with God, then you should join us for The Bible Timeline Study, beginning September
28, 2017. By being a part of this study, you will not only benefit personally, but you will also help to bring about a profound renewal in our parish as we
all grow closer to Christ.
The study will include a series of twenty-four videos

The Kids’ Reading Room Needs Volunteers!
The parish of Our Lady of Walsingham is partnering with the Kids’ Reading Room, a non-profit organization working to pro-mote literacy and the love of reading in un-derprivileged children living in apartment communities in Houston. We need volun-teers to read with kids at the Castlewood Apartments Reading Room on Mondays form 4:15 to 5:30 pm. If interested, please contact Melissa Dorney at [email protected]. Our Lady in September
According to tradition, the month of May is set aside in honor of the Virgin Mary and October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. But the end of summer and beginning of autumn are also remarkably rich with Marian feasts and memorials. On August 15 we celebrated the Solemnity of Our Lady’s Assumption, and then a week later—on the octave—the Church commemorated the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In thus linking these two feasts, the liturgical year reminds us that Our Lady was lifted up to heaven to exercise her royalty as the mediatrix of graces in the office of intercession on our behalf.
Last Friday, September 8 the Church observed the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mother. To the usual practice of celebrating the “birthdays” of saints on the day of their death instead of the day of birth, the Church makes only two exceptions, for Our Lady and for John the Baptist (we commemorated his nativity on June 24 and his martyrdom on August 29). Like Christ whose birth we celebrate on December 25, both were born without original sin: Mary was immaculate from the first moment of her conception, while John was cleansed of original sin in Elizabeth’s womb at the Visitation of Mary.
On Tuesday, September 12, the Church honors the Most Holy Name of Mary. In keeping with Jewish cus-tom, Our Lady’s parents named her eight days after her birth, and they gave her the Hebrew name Maryam, meaning lady or sovereign (Domina in Latin). Thus we call Mary “Our Lady” as we call Jesus “Our Lord,” and at Mass we bow our heads at mentions of her name just as we reverence the Divine Name of her Son.
Then on Friday, September 15, falls the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, commemorated here under her English title as St. Mary at the Cross. On the octave day after the Nativity of Our Lady and a day after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we commemorate “The Seven Dolors of the Virgin,” as the day was known in the seventeenth century, and we remember the “seven swords” that pierced the Heart of Mary in her compas-sion for the sufferings of her Divine Son. Thus contemplating the spiritual martyrdom of the Mother of God, we look to our own Feast of Title, the Solemnity of Our Lady of Walsingham on Sunday, September 24, when we will make merry and recall Mary’s solemn joy in the Annunciation and even as we celebrate the beloved patroness of this our cathedral parish and of the whole North American Ordinariate.
