Nearing the first quarter of 2021, we haveseen plenty of changes in the green front, and yet there is more to come. I'm excitedto be on board as the Vice-Chair for SIBLduring these exciting times.
Although sustainability has always beenpart of Singapore's focus, it has neverreached a level that encompasses everydetail and aspect of our living. Frombuilding, food security, transportation, and most importantly education. So, whatis the tipping point or rather the catalystto it all?
I would share the contribution to bepartially COVID. The way we build, think, the philosophy of buildings are beingtested a great deal in these times.Without a doubt it has gotten us thinkingcoupled with the world pressure withenvironmental commitments spilling outof every organization, it is a healthycompetition that benefits the world atlarge.
(Drumrolls...) Welcoming the 4th Green BuildingMasterplan. I could not be more excited. As part of theBCA Green Building Advisory CommitteeTask Force overseeing the new GM 2021and as one of the BCA SGBC GreenAdvocates. I believe we have done verywell in this sector, but not without hardwork and the determination to see itthrough.

Pathway 1: Energy Usage Index( EUI).This shall be based on energyconsumption.Pathway 2: Fixed Metrics. To meet KPIthat make an energy-efficient project.Pathway 3: Energy Savings. Enhanceenergy modelling framework.
Well for those who would like to do a fastreading here are a few pointers on thechange: Most Green Mark criteria have beenstreamlined into one main documentincluding the SLEB and Zero-energy off-site Renewable Energy Credit ( REC) areallowed (subject to some terms andconditions ).There are mainly 3 pathways to get you toSLEB
An Inside Look into Sustainability from Chairman ofSustainability Committee and VP of SIBL
We are the only on the planet that cointhe term ‘ Super Low Energy Building (SLEB)’, simple and effective. I have comeacross other terms, ‘Near Zero Energy’, ‘Low Carbon’ which somehow misses afew key rings to it.
In 2018, the plan was rolled out, andexcitedly I gave it a go. Singapore hasnow a handful of projects that haveattained the status which proves it to bevery much do-able.

And for those who are looking at GreenBuilding Incentives for both New andExisting buildings, here are a fewpointers:
Importance of SustainableProcurement in BuiltEnvironment
Sustainable construction is not only aboutenvironmentally friendly designs. It ismore than building the structures. Withinnovative green designs and bestpractices to manage construction waste, abuilding design can come up. However, construction procurement plays animportant role in overall project success.
In traditional construction projects, procurement is mainly focused on price &quality. However, to make it a sustainableprocurement, which aligns with the greenbuilding concepts, it is important toidentify the best practices. Other than theprice and quality, there is a big impact onhow they are purchased and what are thepractices followed.
As such, sustainable procurement is notjust about choosing the environment-friendly products which are mentioned inthe project documents. It is all aboutachieving the value for money consideringboth economic and environmental aspects.

Importance of Sustainable Procurement in BuiltEnvironment
According to the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), “Sustainableprocurement is the act of adopting social, economic and environmental factorsalongside the typical price and quality considerations into the organizationshandling of procurement processes and procedures.”
To achieve sustainability in construction procurement, companies can identify thebest procurement methods which ensure benefits both environmentally and sociallywhile they operate profitably. The below figure shows various stages of the procurement process which includesustainable methods.

Why Sustainable Procurement Matters?
Benefits of Sustainable Procurement in the built environment
Importance of Sustainable Procurement in BuiltEnvironment
Encouraging innovation in the supplychain.More efficient and effective ways ofusing natural resources.Reduce the impact of pollution andwastage.Improvement in the organization’scorporate social responsibility (CSR) Reduce the impact of hazardoussubstances.
Sustainable procurement is based on thevalue for money concepts which considerthe benefits to the society, environment, and the economy. It also assesses thebenefits to the procuring organization.
Therefore some of the benefits ofsustainable procurement in the builtenvironment include,
Further, the benefits of sustainableprocurement can be identified in keyareas such as cost reduction, revenuegrowth, and reputation.
Benefits of SustainableProcurement in the builtenvironment
Sustainable procurement focuses on costreduction, which prevents unnecessarycosts in transferring and in energyconsumption.
By implementing sustainableprocurement practices, companies ensuresocial sustainability as well, whichprevents purchasing from organizationsthat follow bad practices such as childlabour, pollution, etc. This practice allows the business to keepits brand value. As a result, revenuegrowth is expected with the increase inbrand equity and loyalty.
By procuring more efficient andsustainable goods, the overall buildingoperation cost can be reduced whichaffects long-term financial savings.
Further, this will create demand forsustainable solutions which increasemarket competitiveness. By applyingsustainable procurement, it is possible toreduce the disposal costs at the end ofthe life cycle of the building. The disposalwill be at a minimal impact on theenvironment.

Importance of Sustainable Procurement in BuiltEnvironment
According to the Design Buildings Wiki, organizations can address thesustainability objectives in the earlyprocurement process. This can be done by identifying thebusiness needs, by defining the sourcingstrategy, and by identifying the suppliers. It is equally important to manageperformance and relationships whilereviewing and learning from thesustainability procurement process.

In a recent speech at the SG SustainableProcurement Forum, Minister forSustainability and the Environment, Ms.Grace Fu said, “By including more sustainablerequirements into tenders and activelysourcing for and developing moresustainable alternatives, buyers of goodsand services can send a strong and clearmessage that sustainable procurement isthe way forward. When more businessesbuy sustainably, others within the supplychain would be encouraged to do so.Collectively, we can all play our part todrive sustainable demand in Singapore.”
The 10 Essential Digital Use Cases for IDD
Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) is theuse of digital technologies to integratework processes and connect stakeholdersworking on the same project throughoutthe construction and building lifecycle. This includes design, fabrication, andassembly on-site, as well as theoperations and maintenance of buildings.
IDD builds on the use of BuildingInformation Modelling (BIM) and VirtualDesign and Construction (VDC), whichhave been implemented in many projectsover the past few years.
3. Visualisation and design checks: UseBIM models together with AugmentedReality, Virtual Reality, or Mixed Realityto seek feedback and validate the design, space requirements, buildability, andconstructability. Deliverables includerendered models.
4. Digital Submission and Approval:Submit deliverables required by variousstakeholders for decision through digitalplatforms. Deliverables includeinformation required for tracking anddecision records.
5. BIM-based tender documentation:Prepare tender documents based oninformation primarily generated from BIMmodels. Deliverables include BIM models, drawings, and tender specifications.
6. Digital logistics: Plan prefabricatedproduction schedule, track and monitorproduction, delivery, and installation ofprefab components digitally. Deliverablesinclude production schedules, digitallogistic delivery records, and simulationsof logistic paths and conditions.

Let’s take a close look at the 10 digitalessential use cases for IDD.
1. Digital Request for Information (RFI):Using digital means to raise, communicate and track issues andfacilitate resolution. Examples of the useinclude issues and resolution dashboards,as well as digital notes of the discussion.
2. Integrated Concurrent Engineering(ICE) Meetings: Conduct meetings withproject team members in a collaborativeway enabled by digital technologies andBIM. Examples include digital records ofdecisions and the use of federatedmodels for discussion.
The 10 Essential Digital Use Cases for IDD
7. Construction Planning and Scheduling:Plan and monitor construction activitiesusing digital construction scheduling, simulation, and sequencing. You can dothis by combining a constructionschedule in Primavera or MicrosoftProjects to Synchro Pro.
8. Digital Progress Monitoring: Monitorsite progress using digital solutions, scanning and update schedules and 3Dmodels for progress reports andpayments. Deliverables include records ofsite progress pictures, progress reports, updated schedules, and 3D models.
9. Digital QA/QC inspections: Recordobservations and track follow-ups duringQA/QC inspections. This process producesdigital audit trails of resolution andapprovals
10. Digital defects management: Manageand track defects and rectification usingdigital checklists and dashboards.Deliverables include a master defects list, digital defect location record, and defectrectification reports.
These 10 essential digital use cases spanacross project stages such as Design,Fabrication, Construction, and AssetManagement stages.
If you have implemented these use casesin your project and are a witness toproductivity improvements, please shareyour story with us!
