Alzheimer’s DiseaseWhat you need to know
Alzheimer’s (AHLZ-high-merz) disease is brain failure
-a progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys
brain cells and affects a person's memory, ability to learn, make judgments,

What causes AD?
Alzheimer’s destroys brain cells
There are 100 billion nerve cells, or neurons, creating a branching network.
Signals traveling through the neuron forest form memories, thoughts and feelings.
Alzheimer’s destroys neurons, thus also destroying memories, thoughts, impulse control, personality, etc

In October 1995, the Sumter, S.C., Rotary Club initiated the effort to prove
CART works by conducting an eight month testing program which was highly
successfulJuly 1996: District 7770 in South Carolina adopted CART as a project.
April 1999: Our first grant of $100,000 is made to Emory University's Alzheimer's Research
Center under the leadership of Dr. Allan Levey. AFAR (American Federation for Aging Research).
History of CART(cont)
.
In the 18 months from January 1999 until June 2000, 10 more Rotary districts of the Carolinas and Georgia adopt CART as a project. The first
Board of Directors meeting was held in November 2000, bylaws were adopted. They state that
100% of donated funds must go to Research!!
Each district that joins the CART program has two representatives on the board and two votes.
