Welcome to our first issue of Rebuild!

This special newsletter tells you about our exciting new plans to redevelop a large part of the Cardinal Hume Centre in 2018. Our big rebuild is a great opportunity to create a more attractive, accessible and flexible space.

As you’ll see on pages 4 and 5, the redevelopment puts our clients first, making it easier for them to access our services. It also brings our frontline staff together in one place. While everyone walking through our doors will be given the same warm welcome as ever, they’ll now benefit from much improved surroundings and a more efficient service.

The first issue of our newsletter coincides with the launch of our consultation about the rebuild, when our clients are invited to take a look at our plans and artist’s impressions, and find out more about the improvements we want to make. We are also asking them to give us their thoughts on how we can enhance some of the inside and outside spaces at the Centre. This really matters to us: feedback from our clients will help us get things right for them as we begin this new adventure.

We’ll update you on the progress of the redevelopment – including findings from our client consultation – in the next edition of this newsletter, out in Spring 2018. In the meantime, I very much hope you like what you see.

Best wishes

Cathy Corcoran OBE

REASONS TO REBUILDWe’re rebuilding the Centre for two main reasons. Firstly, we want to give our clients a better experience as they enter our building, wait to see their advisor and use our services. Secondly, we want to improve the way we respond to people in need, especially as demand for our services is increasing. The redevelopment allows us to relocate our service teams so that they are together in one area and enables us to use the new space more flexibly in the future. All in all, we’ll be able to work more efficiently and effectively.

PROBLEM SOLVING DESIGNOur redesign will help us to overcome some of the problems that we have with the current layout in our building.

Our new development will help us to

follow the example set by the Centre’s

founder, Cardinal Basil Hume.

We want to make sure that everyone

who comes to the Centre for help

feels welcome, safe

and supported.

Will ESOL, IT and Family Services return to their original areas after the redevelopment?

05We want to give our clients a better experience during their time at the Centre. While the welcome people receive inside our building is always warm, the entrance to our Centre is not as accessible or attractive as we would like it to be. Our rebuild will allow us to create an inviting space which is altogether lighter, brighter and easier to access and to get around.

We also want to improve the way we respond to people in need, especially as demand for our services is increasing. We’ve now outgrown the assessment, one to one and office space within the current building configuration, and our service teams are located on various floors. By bringing our service teams together and our clients closer to their advisors, we will be able to run our services more efficiently and effectively. The redevelopment will also allow us to use the new space more flexibly in the future, should we want to expand or adapt our services.

The plans include: new working spaces for our welcome and assessment team, housing, welfare rights and immigration advice teams; better training facilities; and an attractive and welcoming new family and young people’s area – all to benefit people in need in the local community. Our advice services will be more visible to our clients, helping us to raise awareness of the range of support we can provide.

Yes, all of our services will keep running. However, our ESOL and Family Services teams will need to move out of the building while the work takes place. We are looking for suitable premises nearby and will let you know once we have decided where we will move to in the New Year. Our IT (digital inclusion) services and our advice and assessment team will also move temporarily to other rooms in the building while the work takes place.

Once all the work has completed, ESOL and IT services will move back to their previous locations. Our ESOL room, which will stay in its current location, will also be upgraded as part of the refurbishment plan. Our Family Services area will be smaller but upgraded and with access to an outdoor play area. The IT room will also have been extended.

We aim to start works during Spring 2018, subject to planning consent. We will update you once we have a confirmed date.

We expect it will take around six months to complete the rebuild.

We expect the rebuild project to cost at least £1m and we are currently fundraising for this. You can find more information on our website, emailing [email protected] or by calling Courtney on 020 7222 1602.

Yes. We invited our clients to see plans and artist’s impressions of the new ground floor during the last week of November 2017. Other key stakeholders (for example, donors, local councillors, external partners) are invited to view our plans from early December onwards. A copy of our plan and artist’s impressions will also be available in print and on our website over the coming months.

We will update clients as our project progresses through our Rebuild newsletter. We’ll share findings from our consultation with you, and explain how your feedback is helping to shape the look, feel and use of this exciting new space. The latest details of our project will also be posted on our website www.cardinalhumecentre.org.uk
