Celebrating Catholic Schools!
By Cassie and Sophia
February 4th-9th, the Diocese celebrated
Catholic Schools Week with fun activities every
day!
On Monday, students watched a video about
St. Charles history. A representative from The
Harlem Globetrotters, Buckets, came and taught
everyone about the ABC’s of Bully Prevention
and showed some cool tricks! Tuesday was crazy
hat and hair day. On Wednesday, students wore
mismatched clothes. There was mismatched
shoes, hair, shirts, socks and so much more!
Students also got to dance to songs like “That’s
What Makes you Beautiful,” and “The
Macarena.” On Thursday, students had a chance
to come closer to Jesus by participating in
Benediction and Adoration. On Friday, students
showed their St. Charles Pride by wearing
jerseys and school colors. There was also a
Kahoot in the gym where students competed
against teachers for a dress down day. The
teachers won, but luckily, Theresa answered a
bonus question to earn the students a dress
down day too! Throughout the week, 7th
graders were leading the school in donating
baby items to the Women’s Care Center. Thank
you, God, for the blessing of Catholic schools.

ON TOP OF THE WORDS!
By Rhea
In December, our school Spelling Bee was
held. Twenty-four students from 5th to 8th
grade competed to be the winner of said Bee,
and it was a tough challenge. The bee ended
with the word “boisterously,” which eighth
grader, Nora Foltz, spelled correctly. She
actually won the Bee last year, too! The
runner-up was Brady Meyer from 6th grade.
Good job to both of them! Nora represented
our school in the Allen County Spelling Bee on
February 8th.
ON TOP OF THE WORLD!
By Rhea
Our school Geography Bee was also held in
December. Students from 5th to 8th grade
participated in this, too. It was also a tough
challenge, and the winner was Ellen Hartzog in
8th grade! Gavin Groves, who’s also in 8th
grade, got second place. Congrats to these
winners!
Yay! For The Hundredth Day!!! By: Clayton, Porter, and Chloe
I bet you don't know what happened on
January 19th. That is, unless you’re a
kindergartner or you
read the title. That's
right, on January 19th,
we celebrated the 100th
day of school. Each
kindergarten class did
different things. All classes did a scavenger
hunt for 100 numbers around the school.
Here's what the different classes did:
Ms. Pelner’s Class
Ms. Pelner’s class did a wide variety of
things such as a 100 sticker book and 100th
day of school wristbands. They also hid one
hundred Kisses around their classroom. When
we interviewed the kids, they were really
excited and loved the scavenger hunt. They
also enjoyed a special 100th day of school
snack.
Mrs. Weidner’s Class
Mrs. Weidner’s class did a lot of different
things such as a hundredth day coloring book.
They made hundredth day hats with the
number 100 on them! Their favorite activities
were recess, snack, and number scavenger
hunt.
Mrs. Conroy’s Class
In Mrs. Conroy's class, they watched a movie.
They also did some awesome hundredth day
coloring pages. They had a special hundredth
day snack and finished the day off by playing
outside. What a great hundredth day of
school!!!

Adoration and Benediction By Kaylee and Catherine
There is way more to Adoration and
Benediction than you know! Adoration first
started in the fourth century. It was made for
the sick and dying. Reverence was absolutely
given to Christ present through the sacrament,
but it was not yet traditional to pray before the
sacrament. This happened more since the
second Vatican Council.
Benediction first started in the thirteenth
century. Benediction of the blessed Sacrament
is a devotional ceremony, mostly in the Roman
Catholic Church.
St. Charles School celebrates Adoration and
Benediction many times during each school
year. Adoration and Benediction are very
important to the Catholic Church so we spread
the good news!
Students from the National Junior Honor Society recently helped at Gigi’s Playhouse, including Pete, Olivia, Hailey, and Steven.

The Winter Olympics
By: Ellie and Jane
The 2018 Winter Olympics was held in South
Korea. It began on February 9th, and ended on
February 25th. There were many Winter
Olympic sporting events, but a few of them
were skiing, bobsleighing, curling, figure
skating, and ice hockey. Lots of people watched
the Olympics.
The National Junior Honor Society put up a
display
in
February
for the
Winter
Olympics
showing
all of the
sports and how many medals the United States
had won. It was outside the cafeteria. Make
sure you watch the next Olympics, the Summer
Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo.
Chinese New Year
Carter and Stella
Have you experienced Chinese New Year? If
you haven’t, this article is perfect for you!
At St. Charles School, the first grade class
celebrates Chinese New Year. Students get to
march around in a dragon while chanting,
“Happy New Year!” in Chinese. Then they get a
delicious Chinese feast. There are foods from
noodles to egg rolls. According to Mrs. Ensley,
they have been
celebrating
Chinese New
Year for 16
years! So most
of us in the
school
remember
about the food and the dragon. Mrs.
Richardson shared some of the things that
they learn. For example, they learn about The
Great Wall and why the Chinese built it, about
silkworms, Silk Road, pandas and their
reserved land, and if red pandas are actually
pandas. This year is the year of the dog, so if a
dog is your zodiac, CELEBRATE!!! Happy
Chinese New Year everyone!
The Pep Session
By: Ava, Brooke, and Avery
February 16th was the Saint Charles School
pep session. A pep session is where the whole
school gets together and the cheerleaders
cheer. Madelyn from sixth grade said, “Our
routine was hard, but we did really well.” The
pep session is a huge celebration of athletes
from our school. We celebrate the
competitions St. Charles has won throughout
the year. During the pep session, the
cheerleaders do cheers, and the girls’ and
boys’ basketball teams play a friendly
basketball competition. There was a huge
school competition about how loud each grade
can be. A first grader said, “I love the
basketball and the three point shot at the
end!” Congratulations, St. Charles Cardinals!

Father Daughter Dance
By Hadley
The night of February 9, there was a
father-daughter dance held at Saint Charles
School.
In the cafeteria
were pictures,
raffle-tickets, food,
drinks, and
valentines in the
making. Then, in the
parish hall, the dance room could be found. This
room was filled with laughter, singing, dancing,
and daddies and daughters of all ages. Then, at
about 8:00, it was time for the slow dance. This
dance was absolutely adorable! By the end of
the night, all of the girls got a rose and walked
out with memories of one special night!
The Sixth Grade Lock-in
By Izzie and Sophia
The generous, wonderful, kind, sixth grade
teachers (Mrs. Bullerman, Mr. Bullerman, Mrs.
Silkworth, and Mr. B) recently planned a lock-in
for our sixth grade. It included pizza, games
outdoors, activities, snacks, and drinks. The
sixth graders who were attending brought
either drinks (pop, juice, or
Gatorade/Powerade) or snacks (chips, crackers,
cookies, or sweets).
How does Lock-in work? Each student
receives a punch card, and the teachers award
punches when students are seen being quiet,
respectful, helpful, or kind. An individual can
earn punches, or punches can be awarded to an
entire class. There are 20 spots on the paper
cards, and a student must complete two cards
to attend. In total, every quarter each sixth
grader must get 40 punches.
Each semester, the cards start over. Even if
you go to the lock-ins every quarter, you are
only filling out 4 punch cards (2 for each
quarter) However, there are really 5 punch
cards available. Only some well-behaving kids
get to that fifth card before it comes to the next
semester and the process starts over. After
finishing that final card, a student is rewarded
with all kinds of extra surprises!
Overall, the lock-in is an active and very
smart way to get the sixth graders to be quiet,
kind, respectful, and helpful. It is also really fun
and a grade bonding experience!!
Saint Joseph: The Earthly Father of Jesus
By: Karen & Maddie
Saint Joseph is the father of Jesus and the
husband of Mary. In 1870, Pope Pius IX
declared Joseph as the patron of the church.
When Joseph found out that Mary was going
to have a baby, he thought about divorce, but
an angel appeared to him and said that the
child Mary carried was the Son of God,
conceived by the Holy Spirit, so Joseph stayed
by her side.
When you want to pray to St Joseph, try
this:
Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great so
strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I
place in you all my interests and desires. Oh,
St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful
inter-
cession, and obtain for me from your divine
Son all spiritual blessings. So that, having
engaged here below your heavenly power, I
may offer my thanks and homage to the most
loving of Fathers. Amen.

A One Man Show
By: Ava, Brooke, and Avery
Steven’s Puppets come to St. Charles
School every year to have a show for students
in kindergarten through grade four. This year
the show was “Sleeping Beauty.” Steven’s
Puppets has roughly 120-150 shows a year.
That’s a lot of shows! They have been
performing for twelve years! Shows are done
for festivals, schools, and libraries. Jonah
Haines, a student from fourth grade said, “I
really liked how funny the show was! I also
liked how pretty the costumes were!”
We are a lucky school to have such
wonderful performances each year! Another
fourth grader, Tatum Miguel said, “I am sad
that it was my last year to see the show, but I
love the performance every year.” That was
the puppet show!
Dr. Seuss is Running Loose!
By:Theresa, Delaney, and Ashton
Who was Dr. Seuss? Dr. Theodor Seuss
Geisel was a
legendary
writer for
children's
books. He
wrote 43
different titles
including The
Cat In The Hat,
Green Eggs
and Ham, and
One Fish, Two
Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Every year, the second grade goes to the
parish hall to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day. They
recently celebrated on March 2nd in the parish
hall. Here are some things they did: They read
some of the amazing Dr. Seuss books. They
graphed data, played games and ate cupcakes.
They mostly just had fun.
Some interesting
facts about Dr. Seuss
include that he used
the term doctor
because his father
always wanted him
to be a doctor. Also,
during World War II,
Seuss served as the
commander of the animation department of
the first motion picture unit of the US
Army/Air Force.
The second graders really enjoyed this
exciting day. Safety Patrol
By Braiden
Have you seen people outside wearing
safety vests in front of the cafeteria or by the
Hession Center? Well, I’m one of those people
who help out in the morning because some
kids like to run for the cafeteria to stay warm.
One of my jobs is to tell kids to walk. Another
job I have is to help kids out of their cars if
they get their book bags or school stuff stuck
in their car. Sometimes I get to put the cones
where they need to be. All the time, I need to
be careful because teachers are still coming
and parking their cars. If you see these people,
you can know they keep us safe.
