It has been an exciting and busy start to the year. We had a lot of events this past month like the New Year’s Day brunch, the chili cook off, GYO, Fabulous Fridays, and of course the Commodore’s Ball.

We have had exceptional turn out at the club this month despite some of the nights being a little bit chilly so let’s keep up the turn out and keep having fun at your club.

The Commodore’s Ball was held on the 25th and if you missed it, you missed one heck of a party. There were so many in attendance that we had to pull out more tables and chairs once the guests arrived. The club looked spectacular and everything was perfect, the members/guests danced and partied till around midnight! Special thanks to all of the many people who had a part in planning the Commodores Ball you all did an outstanding job!!! My congratu-lations to Ricky Welch Jr for 2019 Yachtsman of the year, Evan Garrison as the Junior Sailor of the Year, Pam Rice for the 2019 Croquet Award and to my great friend Bo Clarke who was honored with the Howard and Sally Kapp Ser-vice Award.

This month we also have a lot of entertaining events planned, don’t forget to come down for the Souper Bowl party and we are also going to have a Valen-tines Day event at the club with some good food and drink. Don’t forget about GYO Thursdays and Sandy’s Friday dinners so come down and spend time with your fellow clubbers.

Come support your club and keep giving us feedback so we can continue to

improve the total club experience.

Thanks- Patrick

Very Important Information: The club sends a lot of information via email—news, newsletters, statements, etc. However due to some changes in email filtering systems by some of the major email carriers, some of this information is being missed because it is being flagged as “spam” or “junk mail” by these systems. A method to keep this from happening is to add the email address for the club to your contacts. We send an email every Thursday detailing what the chef will have for us on Thursday nights. If you don’t receive it, check your email spam folder for it. If it is in there, most email systems give you the option to mark it as from a trusted sender or “not spam.” We want you getting all the latest news and updates from the club and hope this helps.

LBYC welcomed the new year with a New Year’s Day food themed brunch on New Year’s Day. Thank you to Don Northcutt for spearheading this event and to all who brought dishes to share. We’d also like to thank Harold Wag-ner for his Friday night dinner of Green Chili served over a beef burrito. It was delicious! I heard that there was an awesome selection of chili for the Chili Cookoff (sorry I missed it) – Congratulations to all the winners.

The hat was officially passed from Commodore Pam Rice to Commodore Patrick Holifield on Saturday, January 25th. The club looked beautiful, the food (by Vicky Brown & pork roast by Bo Clarke) was delicious, the music (by Ronnie Hammons) was great - we had a record crowd and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Thank you to Elvis Gates for handling the invitations and programs for the ball (Melissa probably helped as well!) Thank you to Past Commodore Dick Marx for again being the Master of Ceremonies and Past Commodore Millard Quigley for offering the blessing. Thank you also to Past Commodore Lawrence Simpson & his wonderful wife Judy for the choc-olate covered cherries & rum balls. EVERYONE enjoyed them!! A big thank you to Missy Wiles, Alison Borison, June Wiggins, Sandy Pace, Don Northcutt, Paul Dorris, Edgie Dorris, Shelda Jones, Pam Rice, Steven Rice, Alice Barnett, Bo Clarke, Patti Steagall, Bob Borison and my granddaughter Lexie Griffith for all their help planning, shopping, arrang-ing, blowing up balloons, decorating, cleaning up, etc., etc., and our bartender Linda for keeping the beverages flow-ing! (If I left anyone out, it certainly was not done intentionally). The “Village” was very busy and we appreciate eve-ryone’s hard work and dedication.

Please check the calendar and newsletter for what’s going on in February and all upcoming events. We continue to have Grill Your Own on Thursday nights with sides prepared by Chef Daniel and delicious desserts by Sandy Pace. Sandy also has great, reasonably priced Friday night dinners. Also, look for flyers and reminders that might be on our website, sent to you via email and/or text or on the tables at the club, and as always – see you at your club!

All I can say is “Whew”!!! January was exciting and so much fun! Thank you to Don and Anna Northcutt for kicking off 2020 with the New Years Day Brunch. Joe Fleming for always providing challenging questions for Trivia Nights.

The Annual Chili Cook Off was another “HOT” event. Thank you to our seven participants Donna Painter, Geneva LaLonde, Alice Barnett, TJ Brace, Jay Winn, Debbie Caldwell and Bobbie Logan. There wasn’t a bad Chili tasted but ultimately the three judges (special thanks, you know who you are) voted as follows:

Alice Barnett-Honorable Mention, T.J. Brace- 3rd Place, Geneva LaLonde, 2nd Place Jay Winn- 1st Place Winner!!!!

Congratulations to you all. We can’t wait till next year to see if Jay can protect his Title and Sombrero.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone that made the Commodore’s Ball such a successful and fun event. I’m sure it will be talked about for years to come. My goodness I had no idea we had so many beautiful and talented dancers among our members. Special shout out to Shelda, Julie, and Sandy for all of their hard work.

The Fun Isn’t About to Stop Now!!

February 2nd starts our month out with the “Souper” Super Bowl Party. Check your e-mail for details. February 8th will have live entertainment with light hors d’oeuvres. It’s a new performer to our club, so come on out and show them how much fun we can have. February 14th Valentines Dinner, details will be sent out soon. February 22 Joe Fleming Trivia with prizes awarded to winning team.

March will not only bring Daylight Savings Time, St. Patrick's Day and Spring, It will also bring Charlie and Patty Coleman’s famous Fish Fry. Remember, if you have any event ideas please reach out to me and let us All enjoy OUR Yacht Club. Watch your email and Texts for details and updates.

Friday Night Bell-Ringer Joe Fleming

The Friday Night experience continues. Do NOT miss out on the delicious, inexpensive meal along with that "Happy Hour" adult beverage . If you take advantage you will become eligible to take home that $50 bar tab when your name is randomly drawn sometime between 7 & 8:30 pm.

What happened in January? Three missed out by leaving before their name was drawn - Nolan Motichek, Patti Keith and Terry Thomas. Two accepted their bar tab - Marguerite Hess and Diane Noyes.

Fridays have really been hopping lately! Come down and be part of the fun!

At 42 years old, Patrick Holifield is one of the youngest commodores of the Long Beach Yacht Club.
