Santiam High School Students Awarded Full University Scholarships
Iris Tichenor
Iris aspires to study health (possibly sports medicine) and can‟t quite believe her college is paid for.
“It hasn‟t quite sunk in yet,” said Iris. ”I‟m just so excited! My mom cried when I told her.” In addition to being an excellent student and involved a multitude of extracurricular activities, Iris works part time as a home care assistant in the Santiam Canyon, loves to travel and ride bike.
Brooke Thompson
Brooke plans to major in business and maybe sees dental school on the horizon. “I‟m ecstatic. I‟m
really looking forward to school at the U of O,” said Thompson, who can list a page worth of clubs, activ-ities, and sports she is involved with. In her spare time she works at Poppa Al‟s in Mill City. Both girls also toured Europe together last year with the International Club.

Two well deserving young ladies were awarded the prestigious Quinn Scholarship last week. “We called them into the office to let them know the morning after they were chosen,” said Amy Jensen, high school guidance counselor. “Nobody wants to wait around to find out this sort of information. This is too important, too exciting.” The Quinn scholarship, around since 1997, has given 23 Santiam High School graduates the oppor-tunity to attend the University of Oregon, Eugene full time for four years at no cost to the students. A committee of seven faculty and community members interviewed a
total of five senior applicants in spring. The students were chosen not only for their academic achieve-ments, but also their community involvement, volunteer efforts and extracurricular school activities. “This is an amazing opportunity, one most of us never had,” said Jen-sen. “It‟s a true gift.” The Quinn Scholarship was named after William L. Quinn who man-aged a lumber mill office in Mill City in the 1930‟s. The fund was financed by his stepson Stanford Smith, who in gratitude for his own gift of a U of O education from Quinn, decided to honor his stepfa-ther with this recognition.

Visitors Flock to Detroit Lake
Businesses welcome the coming summer season
Detroit area businesses were filled over the week-
end as summer-like sun drew boaters and travelers
to the lake. “Business is great for having snow on
Thursday, then rain. People are in really good spir-
its,” said Shauna Edwards of River‟s Run Café.
“People are ready to get out.”
Both Kanes Marina and Detroit Lake Marina put
their docks were out—and were a welcome sight
for local fisherman.
“Any day fishing is better than a good day at
work,” said Mike from Salem, who caught a couple
of 6” trout on the maiden voyage of his new boat.
His brother Will from Washington, agreed. “The
fish finder said there‟s plenty of big trout!”

Relay for Life Sporting Clay Fun Shoot By Heidi Fobert
Local participants of Relay for Life, Team Freres (representing Freres Lumber Company) held their second annual Sporting Clay Fun Shoot and Tournament April 16 at Cedar Mills Road to raise money for the American Cancer Society. “We think Relay for Life is a great program,” said Ted Freres, the company president. “We‟re just happy to put on a fun shoot...and we‟re glad to have a lot of local support.” Many local and non-local participants enjoyed the sporting clay course, Crazy Quail and BBQ despite the wet weather. Entry was $10 for 25 shots. 100% of the proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Special thanks to the many volunteers and sponsors—including Gene‟s Meat Market, Freres Lumber Company, Relay for Life, North Santiam Paving Co., NW Target Inc., Kettle Chips, Best Pots, Franz and Pepsi.

Free Health Screening Available April 30th in Mill City
The Mill City Lions Club is working with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing
Foundation to provide programs that positively impact quality of life in the
community through FREE health screenings.
April 30, 10am to 5pm the Mobil Health Screening Unit will offer visual acui-
ty, hearing, blood pressure, diabetes and glaucoma screenings at the Canyon
Arts Festival in Mill City. (Diabetes testing requires a three-hour fast prior to
test.) The van will be located on Evergreen Street in front of the high school
baseball field.
The MHSU program is a joint project of the 188 Lions, Lioness and Auxiliary
Clubs in Oregon and the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, a non-
profit organization formed by the Lions and dedicated to serve Lions Clubs by
supporting their efforts in humanitarian assistance. Last year the MHSU trucks
travelled 24,915 miles in the state of Oregon providing free health screenings to
27,540 residents. Among those screened, 10,030 potential health problems were
identified.

Mill City Christian Church gets new name, location
Formerly Mill City First Christian
Church, the 80 year old landmark vot-
ed to drop the „First‟ to better identify
with it‟s history and vision.
They‟ve also been working on raising
funds to build a new church at their
new location on Kingwood Ave, Mill
City.
“We‟re a non-denominational Chris-
tian church,” said Pastor Brian Byers.
“In the bible, churches were named for
their location. It makes sense that
we‟re Mill City Christian Church. Us-
ing the word „first‟ in our name indi-
cates a denominational tie—something
we haven‟t had for 40 years.”
The church is in the process of rais-
ing funds to build at their new loca-
tion. The next fundraiser will be an
auction at the Gates Fire Hall on June
4, which will be catered by Isreal Mar-
tinez (of Sierra Mexican Restaurant in
Gates) and the culinary students at his
school. It will be the first outside
group to use the Gates Fire Hall.
Mill City Christian Church has al-
ready raised $150,000 for the project
and interested persons can see a scale
model at the church. Visit

Mom & Me Tea Party coming this Mother’s Day
Sponsored by Mary Puffpaff and the
Santiam Valley Grange, this first an-
nual event was created to honor a tra-
dition started eight years ago.
“My mom started having tea parties
with my daughter when she was little,”
said Lyons resident Jessi Tabler. “We
like tea parties—it‟s fun to dress up
and wear fancy hats. And it‟s a good
thing for the community kids to do.”
Mom & Me Tea Party will be held on
May 7, 2pm. Cost is $7.50 for two,
$2.50 each addtl party member. Gen-
tlemen welcome, too! Prizes for the
best: young ladies hat, matching hats,
best overall hat. Plus raffle, crafts &
door prizes. Info/tickets: 859-2161.

Nuts & Bolts Society goes wine
tasting
Sixteen members of the Nuts & Bolts
Society, the fundraising group for the
Mill City Canyon Life Museum, con-
ducted their “annual meeting” April 16
on a bus—in between wine tasting,
lunch and desert at three different
West Salem wineries.
First, the group stopped at Bethel
Heights Winery for lunch, then they
were off to Fire Steel Cellars for wine
and cheese, followed by John Winery
for desert. They capped it all off with a
stop at Willamette Valley Cheese Co.
The Society played Bingo on the
drive, and of course included a hand
for driver David—who won. The event
is one of three that the Nuts & Bolts
Society organizes, the fundraising
group that replaced the book sale this
year. To join, call Liz Cutler at 503-
897-5069.
Yard sale fundrais-er raises $1600 for
youth campers Thanks to the community members
who shopped—and donated their re-
salable goods—$1600.00 was raised to
help send 40 local Young Life/
Wyldlife campers to the Washington
Family Ranch this summer.
“We felt like that was phenomenal,”
said organizer Ruth Lemke. 12-15 vol-
unteers spent April 15-16 setting up,
selling and taking down the yard sale
held at Santiam High School com-
mons.
Young Life, a Christian youth group
serves up to 40 high school age kids a
week. Wyldlife, the middle school
counterpart, serves up to 100 kids at
their monthly meetings.
The group was restarted in 1996 and
all members are volunteer. Donations
are still needed: Santiam Canyon
Young Life/Wyldlife 211 SW King-
wood Mill City 97360.
“I just want to say thank you to the
community for the support that they
give Young Life/Wyldlife,” said
Lemke. “ This camp is unlike any
camping experience that I ever experi-
enced. The things to do, the food and
accommodations—kids are pampered
and the message is brought to them in
a way that
they hear
it. They
really lis-
ten and

members happily wave good-bye to Mill City.

The North Santiam was so high and muddy
last week that few people were fishing or
even running the river. Numerous trips were
cancelled or delayed because of the poor riv-
er and weather conditions. We still have 101
inches of snow at Little Meadows (4000 feet
elevation just South of Detroit Lake). Detroit
Lake will receive a lot of snowmelt, and the
river coming out of Detroit will be high
while all this recent snow melts away. The
Army Engineers guess it will be at least a
week before river levels get back to anything
near normal. Detroit Lake was only six feet
lower than summer high level last week.
Lake elevation is 1,557 feet, and is scheduled
to rise up to 1,563.5 feet by May first.
So far, 61 Chinook have swum upstream
from Willamette Falls at Oregon City along
with 1,301 summer steelhead and 6,214 win-
ter steelhead. Those are good numbers, and
we will apparently have good fishing for the
Spring, Summer, and Fall.
North Santiam River Guides Association
organized a clean up work party at Camp
Taloali last Saturday. High water debris and
invasive species vegetation were pulled.
Thanks to Bob Lusk, Paul Carr, Gary Ryan,
Dave Mischell, Tyson Ferrell, and Glen
Tadina. The next river cleanup is at Minto
Park with fishing demos and barbecue lunch.
A steady downpour April 16 washed
