The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde.

I

The American Otis family decides to buy Canterville castle to the English family of Canterville although these warned that there was a ghost and they had decided not to dwell over the castle for the consequences, sometimes fatal, acts of this ghost.

El fantasma de Canterville de Oscar Wilde. 

I La familia Otis de Norteamérica decide comprar Canterville-castle a la familia Inglesa de los Canterville pese a que estos le advirtieron que había un fantasma y que ellos habían decidido no habitar más el castillo por las consecuencias, a veces mortales, de los actos de este fantasma. 

Hiram Otis: El padre de la familia y Lucrecia Otis, la madre, tienen cuatro hijos: Washington, el mayor, Virginia, la del medio y dos hijos gemelos. Cuando llegan a Canterville-Castle los recibe la señora Umney, ama de llaves de la propiedad. 

II Recorriendo el castillo la familia encuentra en la biblioteca una mancha de sangre, junto a la chimenea. La señora Umney les cuenta que es imposible remover la mancha y que en ese lugar Simón canterville (el fantasma) había matado a Leonor Canterville. Sin embargo, Washington saca una barra limpiadora traída de Norteamérica y limpia la mancha sin el menor problema. Esa noche el fantasma aparecen el pasillo de las habitaciones haciendo chocar sus cadenas por lo que Hiram sale de su habitación y le ofrece un pomo de aceite para máquinas: ante esta reacción el fantasma sale corriendo y gritando fuertemente pero los gemelos le tiran almohadas en la cabeza, por lo que el fantasma decide desaparecer. 

III Otro día intenta calzarse una armadura para asustar a los Otis, pero no soporta el peso de la misma y se cae mientras se la colocaba, el estruendo despierta a toda la familia: Los gemelos le tiran gomerazos desde arriba de la escalera mientras que la señora Otis le ofrece una pomada para las raspaduras de la rodilla. Esto lo enoja mucho y decide desaparecer hasta unos días después donde está decidido a asustar a toda la familia, excepto a Virginia, con quien será bueno. Mientras sube a la habitación se encuentra con un fantasma y como nunca había visto uno sale huyendo a su escondite. Al otro día decide unirse al fantasma para asustar a la familia, pero se da cuenta que era e mentira, armado con una escoba, una calabaza y una vela y con un cartel colgado que decía que el fantasma Otis era el único original y que no se aceptasen imitaciones. 

IV Pese a que la mancha de sangre sigue apareciendo todas las noches a la familia le llama la atención los constantes cambios de colores de la misma hasta que un día aparece la mancha de color verde esmeralda y a la familia le agrada. El familia tiene cuidado en su andar para no ser visto ni oído por la familia. Los gemelos le cruzaban cuerdas por los pasillos para que se tropezara y le enjabonaban las maderas para que se cayera. Para vengarse se disfrazó de fantasma sin cabeza y decidió vengarse de los gemelos, cuando sube a la habitación encuentra la puerta media abierta y decide patearla para hacer una aparición más terrible, ni bien lo hace le cae en la cabeza una cubeta con agua. El fantasma huye a su escondite y pasa enfermo varios días. Cuando se recupera llega al castillo, de visita, el duquecito Stilton, familia a la cual el fantasma le tenía rencor y quería asustarlo pero desiste en el último momento por miedo a los gemelos. 

V Paseando en caballo con el duque Stilton Virginia rompe su vestido; vuelve a su casa y entra por la puerta de atrás buscando a su madre, creyendo verla entra en una habitación y se encuentra, en

realidad, con el fantasma. Virginia está por correr pero decide acercarse y hablar con él, luego de una breve discusión reclamándole que él le había sacado todas las temperas de colores para mantener su mancha Virginia se apiada del fantasma y le pregunta por qué es de ese modo, a lo que el fantasma le explica que eso es lo que debe hacer un fantasma. Simón le pide ayuda para poder morir tranquilo: ella debía llorar y rezar por él por que él ya no tenía lágrimas ni fe.Virginia acepta, el fantasma le dice que oirá y verá cosas terribles pero que el infierno no puede hacer nada en contra de su pureza y la lleva a una caverna oculta en alguna parte de la mansión. 

VI Al percatarse de la ausencia de Virginia la familia emprende una búsqueda sin frutos. Después de cenar, a las 12 de la medianoche, en medio de gritos y luces espeluznantes, Virginia aparece de una grieta de la pared, llevando una cajita de madera llena de joyas que le obsequió el fantasma. Les dijo que el fantasma se había arrepentido de sus pecados y que ella había ayudado a liberarse, luego los llevó hasta donde estaba oculto el cadáver y por la ventana de la prisión uno de los gemelos vio que el almendro del patio estaba florecido; Virginia le explico que eso significaba que el fantasma había sido perdonado. 

VII Otis le pide al vendedor de la casa que acepte en devolución las joyas de su familiar Simón, pero que permita que Virginia conserve la caja de madera ya que ella la quería y había pedido. El inglés niega el pedido y le deja las joyas a Virginia. La muchacha nunca contó a nadie lo que sucedió en la cárcel del fantasma, ni siquiera a su esposo, el duque Stilton, pero sí agradecía a Simón el haberle enseñado el valor de la vida, haber conocido la muerte y los motivos por los que el amor es más fuerte que la muerte
