Blanche and I used to sing a song as we drove along the roads of the parishes we served as a Church Army couple in Quebec, north of Montreal - “Make me a blessing, make me a blessing. Out of my life may Je- sus shine.” These were words that summed up what we wanted to be in the Lord’s service; “a blessing to others and ones from whom Jesus would shine for others to see and feel.” I am again learning that as one desires to be a blessing one also becomes a recipient of bless- ing. I am finding that Street Hope ministry in White- horse, Yukon is a two way street. It is not just about giving time and care to people. It is not just about pray- ing for those one meets in this ministry. It is also about being blessed, deeply spoken to, and even sometimes being convicted of the truth about ones’ self. It is about receiving love and care as well as giving it. Street Hope ministry has been for me a profound learning experi- ence. This has been and continues to be a rewarding ministry. Terry Buckle Street Hope Whitehorse 2015 WINTER SPRING CALLEDTOSERVE THRESHOLD MINISTRIES I have learned that things happen among the poor and the addicted that shame me as a professed fol- lower of the Lord Jesus Christ. What I have seen hap- pening relationally among these people, where one would think it would not happen, is care, concern, support, acceptance and encouragement of each other. What I see happening among these folks out- side the walls of the institutional church I often do not see as clearly within those walls. In Street Hope ministry I feel as if I am walking where Jesus walks. I feel this strongly. It is where I am called to be on this leg of the journey. It all began for me long ago now, on the streets of Cabbage Town in downtown Toronto as a Church Army Evangelist. It too, was a ministry where I sought to give love and care only to find I was un-expectantly the recipient of so much of that from those I felt led to serve. In my ministry, I have now gone full circle - from Street Ministry in Toronto, to the high Arctic, to ordination, to Episcopal ministry and now a return to ministry outside of the structures of the institutional church, in partnership with various Whitehorse churches under the umbrella of Threshold Ministries as an Evangelist engaged in outreach ministry. Today, a couple who I have sought to serve in Street Hope ministry blessed me. They blessed me with love, care and with their prayers. We met around the dining room table in the beautiful country home of Myrielle, a volunteer. We shared in tea and good- ies and heard the encouraging words of two who were finding hope and faith through this ministry in the midst of trial and difficulty. I was blessed as one of them prayed from his heart a prayer of thanksgiv- ing and appreciation for their discovery of faith and hope through the receiving of Street Hope ministry and prayed with deep concern for others in need. The whole experience around that dining room table in that beautiful wilderness setting was a time of heal- ing, a time of blessing, a hope giving time. I felt like I was on the receiving end of love. I thank God for this ministry and for the support of Threshold Ministries and of those who pray for us and give to us financial- ly and in many supportive ways so that good things keep happening through Street Hope Whitehorse.

When I was commis-sioned 35 years ago, Sis-ter Elizabeth Carr, a visitor from the United Kingdom, heard that I was going to be working in a parish in New-foundland and she said, “Remember that you’re an evangelist.” She knew that many personnel sent to parishes found themselves working in the church, not reaching out as they were trained to do. That sentence stuck with me during my two years in Channel-Port Aux

Basques. On one occasion I was about to start a service in a small community when I noticed a young boy playing outside. When I invited him in, he said he had no collec-tion. I told him to come in anyway and he heard about the Good Shepherd who gave His life for His sheep. There were other times when I am sure I was true to my mission as an evangelist but there were also times when I was caught up in parish administration type programs. After that 2-year stint, I married a former class-mate and we embarked on a journey together, trying to educate the church on using evangelists to reach out

Restoring a Commission

A Word From Our National Director We celebrate hope at Christmas time. Through-out these days and weeks, we strive to focus on

being “of good cheer” and celebrating with family and friends. For many though, this time can be one

filled with pain, suffering and darkness. They want hope of good things to come. They long for good news.

Simeon was a similar sort of guy. He was longing for hope – for God’s promise to be fulfilled. At the right mo-ment, God fulfilled His promise and burst into Simeon’s world. “For my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples.” (Luke 2:30-31). Simeon spoke these words as he held and looked into the eyes of Jesus, and his hope was realized. It is not hard to imagine how a child, a newborn baby, can be a symbol and sign of hope. I remember when my niece was born; I rushed up to visit the newly expanded family in the hospital – an exhausted mother, a new dad and this tiny perfect creation. We took turns holding this fragile gift, praying for life and joy and happiness for her. It was possibly the first time I fully realized the fragility of life. At that moment in her life, nothing had gone wrong – life was perfect. She is perfect. While I recognize that she will be molded and changed by exposure to the world, she is still a princess with so much joy and, in rare moments of stillness with her (limited at this age), I am reminded of those first few hours. God chose His moment to burst into the world to pull us

from our brokenness and despair, to offer us life, hope, joy and love. We celebrate these things throughout the Advent, Christmas and New Year seasons. But this is not the only time of year this breakthrough happens. As you read through the updates from our evangelists, pause to think of the countless opportunities that they have had to witness God break-ing into peoples’ lives. Each time

someone pauses to consider Christ’s invitation to “Come and follow me” God begins breaking in. This involves care and nurture; it is a journey through difficult times in difficult situations. We are each invited to be part of this process, to be part of this journey. I would encourage you to notice these “break-in” stories in our newsletter. God, through the pow-er and gentleness of the Holy Spirit, because of Christ, is moving throughout our country. Lives are being trans-formed; hope is being restored. Let us join together in giving thanks and praying for eyes to be opened and for hearts, like Simeon’s, to long for Good News.

With thanks for our continued parnership in the Gospel,

with children’s programs, youth outreaches, and special events. In our first parish there was room for sharing the Good News with people who had lost a child to crib death a few years earlier. They had been told that their unbaptized baby wouldn’t be go-ing to Heaven. When our unbaptized baby died, Reed spoke at his funeral assuring the gathered crowd, most of whom wouldn’t normally be in church, that we expected to see our Jamie in heaven -- we were looking forward to a joyous reunion one day. The neighbour who had lost a baby was there and others who needed to hear the message were too. Doors were opened for us after that. In Wemindji, PQ, our next post, doors were opened to teach “religious education” in the local public school, for both of us. The young people were hungry for the Gospel. We travelled to Fredericton, Toronto, Elkhorn, Manitoba, where Reed had various assignments, and then here to Saint John, NB. My job was to find ways to serve while caring for my children. Mostly, I tried to build relationships with folks outside the church and in some places that wasn’t easy. However, in each community I tried to remember that I’d been commissioned as an evangelist. The name has changed from Church Army to Threshold Ministries, but the calling is still the same. God has called me and I need His help to be faithful to that calling.

Linda FlemingSaintJohn,NB

One of the ways we support people at Street Hope Peterborough is through our Mercy Centre where we store used furniture, beds, small appli-ances, dishes, and other household items that we provide free of charge to people getting set up in new apartments and rooms in the city. We are thankful to Jesus for His wonderful work in providing for the practical needs of people we are serving in the community. Over the past few months we have been able to help people, who literally have nothing, to begin their lives as they are moving from homeless shelters and abused woman’s shelters back into the community. We are also thankful that we

can serve people who have been referred to us from addiction services and other community agencies. Re-cently, we also assisted a pastor and his family fleeing violence in The Ukraine who needed furnishings for their new home just outside of the city. Please continue to pray for the ministry of Street Hope Peterborough as we continue to meet both the practical and spiritual needs of people we are serving.

On October 1, 2014 at the Western Regional Gathering, we “welcomed home” Jason Haggstrom and restored his commissioning to him. We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate his ministry and the evangelistic call that God has placed on Jason.

Light and Cookies in the Edmonton InstitutionThere is a lot to celebrate at the Edmonton Institution. A maximum security prison for male offenders may not be the first place in Canada that comes to mind when you think of celebrations, but Threshold Evangelist Barry Rose is witness to God’s work in many of the men’s lives. As Prison Chaplain, Barry has good attendance at all eight chapel services weekly - roughly a third of the total population.

Homemade cookies have become a token of friendship within the cement walls. Volunteers are making up to 20 dozen cookies a week to send to the inmates. Barry posts a sign up saying where the cookies are from and that the inmates are welcome to become part of that community upon their release. Cookies have become a warm invite to the inmates upon their release into communities. This may seem like such a small gesture and yet, in this environment it is rather a big deal. The institution has never permitted such a thing before and the men are touched because reintegration is scary.

The transient, unstable and sometimes chaotic environment the jail provides makes discipleship difficult. Barry is praying that discipleship can occur. He is working on providing consistent support material on a closed circuit TV channel that will be used during the frequent lock-downs.

There is a great need for NA and AA groups to get up and running ASAP. He also has requests from the inmates for pen-pals and visitors and is hoping for outside volunteer involvement in the ministry and reintegration efforts. Getting more congregations and communities involved in sending cookies into the prison would be a wonderful gift.

With several requests for baptism, prayer and help, there are many reasons to celebrate. Praise God for His presence of light in the Edmonton Institution and join us in praying for Barry’s protection and provision in this ministry.

FORMATION UPDATE

6

Ruth Jarvis ColemanDean Of Formation

It is interesting to watch how Jesus builds community in the hearts of those who follow him. This year we are blessed to have an excellent group of students in the Formation Program. They come from all walks of life and there is a good range in their ages. Their spiritual backgrounds differ too. Some are seasoned veterans from the street, while others are seasoned in the church. All are following Christ in a very unique way. As a part of the spiritual formation program I meet with the students early in the morning before other staff and arrive for work. Our prayer begins with a review of the past 24 hours, which helps us to notice God’s presence at work in our lives. We also take time to notice where we have sensed an absence of God’s presence. Although we know God is always present, we sometimes fail to recognize His hand as He is forming us or as He is at work in the lives of others we encounter. This spiritual discipline of examination of the day helps us to be more attentive to the work of a God who is present in all we do. As we share how God is “with us” in a group setting, our bonds of community deepen. Conversation at this level is intimate, and authentic, and it opens our hearts and even our minds to be fully present to God and to others. It

is an excellent way to begin or end a day. This practice is especially helpful for people who lead busy lives. It is important to recognize or “find God” in all we do. Although it sounds counter intuitive I would say the busier your schedule the more frequent the prayer. Taking a few breaks each day to exercise this spiritual discipline will bear much fruit. Our Formation Modules challenge our Evangelists-in-Training to stretch in their thinking and in their practice. Fall Formation 2014 focused primarily on Christian Community and on Counseling. Dietrich Bonheoffer and Jean Vanier’s books on community deepened our understanding of what it means to be Christian Community. It was good groundwork as we move into the Missional Community model for Threshold Ministries. The students found the counseling course to be very helpful for the work they are doing in their workplaces as they come alongside so many who are in of need compassionate care.

Threshold Ministries has begun a partnership with Wycliffe College to provide a second institutional op-tion for our Evangelists in Training (Eit’s). Principal Dr. George Sumner & Shawn Branch prayed together and signed signed a Memorandum of Understanding on October 7, 2014. This is the beginning of a partnership for our evangelists-in-training to have the option of doing their academic studies through Wycliffe as part of their Formation. Other partnerships and opportunities were discussed and will be announced at a later date.

Each day when I get home from work, I ask my children about their day. I am flooded with excited details as they share with me. I am often encouraged to call somebody and tell them about what they have shared. Eventually, I will meet up with a friend or family member who has heard one of these stories and I’ll want to talk about it again! It is our hope that it is this excitement and encouragement that will be carried to your friends, family and church community to share the Good News.

You are invited to join us in celebrating the Good News with ‘Good News Sunday’ beginning this February! Let’s dedicate February to the celebration of those people who have found new life in Jesus, and for our evangelists as they walk alongside and support them in their journey. We invite you and your church community to dedicate one Sunday to celebrate and support the work of evangelism across Canada.

Will you join us?

The hope is that new partnerships are formed and there is further growth of our current partnerships. We want to see people living to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and helping those on the margins. And it would be uplifting to see children encouraged to show compassion.

We are offering some tools to assist in planning out the ways that you can share the Good News; these tools are available at:
