Organised by Student Executive Leader (SEL), Tan Yee Lyn (Irene) of Murdoch Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems and Computer Science, who put together a series of quizzical challenges for Kaplan students.

Participants were divided into teams of 3. The teams were then put to various tests that require the use of their senses; Sight, Smell, Hear, Taste and Touch.

The games started with ‘Sight’ where various Pokemon pictures were pasted around the school campus. Their observance were hence tested in this category. Under ‘Smell’, they

were required to sniff out and guess the various covered food items. Under ‘Taste’, participants were to taste and guess the types of ingredients used for a fruit and vegetable mixed drink. The fourth segment, ‘Hear’, required the participants to identify the 3 different songs in a music mash-up.

Last but not least, during the ‘Touch’ segment, team members were required to guess and remember the items placed inside nine different covered boxes. A dash of ‘Fear Factor’ was injected into this particular game as well. They were not told that one of the boxes contained live earthworms, much to the horror and

yet amusement of the participants when the answers were revealed.

Points were allocated to the different segments and attractive prizes amounting to $600 in total were won by the 3 happy teams!

Career Development Series

For the first time in four years, there were more jobseekers than job openings in Singapore. In the Q2 2016 report released by Ministry of Manpower, the unemployment rate rose to 4.3 per cent in June – the highest level since 2009. So what does it mean for hiring managers? They will receive more job applications for every job advertised in the market. It will also mean that they will need more time and effort to shortlist suitable candidates for the particular position.

So put yourself in the shoes of the poor, exhausted, time-stretched hiring manager. Which resume would you be keen to set aside amongst the heap of applications that you have received?

But if you are the job hunter, what can you do to make sure that your resume stands out above the rest? Use a bright pink background

design? Send out resumes using traditional mail with perfumed scented envelopes?

Rest assured that you do not need to do those to increase your visibility. It is the content of your resume that speaks out loud. Below are some tips that you may use to impress the hiring manager.

1. Keep it simple.Your resume is not a five

thousand word assignment that you have been submitting to your lecturer. It should not be too long and wordy. Try to limit yourself to two pages only and not more than that. If you are a fresh graduate, a single page resume should suffice.

2. Start with relevant points. It takes lesser time to scan

through a resume than Usian Bolt needs to finish a hundred meter race. 5-7 seconds is all an

experienced hiring manager needs to decide if he or she wants to shortlist you for an interview. So it is important that you present relevant points to make your resume work for you more effectively.

3. Tap on Keywords to enhance your resume.

When you are customizing your resume to a position, bear in mind the keywords that you will need to include. These keywords are can be found in the Job Descriptions and Job Requirements. Read through carefully and you will find that these words are frequently repeated, if not a synonym of it will be used instead. These are the keywords which you will need to use when you are drafting your resume.

4. Points that you should not include

Leave irrelevant information aside. Examples of insignificant details are:

Political affiliations, marital status and date of birth: Such personal information may open doors to potential hiring discrimination.

Personal identification number (e.g NRIC or passport number): You may not want others to misuse your identification number for any unauthorized activity, would you?

Expected Salary (unless requested): Only discuss salary matters when being asked during an interview.

Still unsure of what you should you include in your resume? Feel free to make an appointment with the career advisor who can share some tips and pointers on how you can make a more effective resume. Simply drop us an email at [email protected] and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Team Diver5e successfully won a place to compete in the regionals which was held on 30th September 2016. The regional finals sees countries from Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

All the teams competing were extremely strong. Eventually, Thailand came in first and third and Malaysia came in second. Though Kaplan did not get into any of the top three placements, the students gained more than just a trophy.

Such competitions are a fantastic arena to boost resumes. Certain skills such as analytical ability are gained. Of course, the network is expanded too as one gets to meet people from different schools or different parts of the world.

Enterprise Resource Planning Challenge (ERMC) 2016 is an inter varsity competition sponsored by SAP Asia Pacific. The objective of this challenge is to run and compete a large virtual company using a system which provides users with a soft real-time business application.

The country final was held on 24 September 2016. 12 teams from National University of Singapore (NUS), Temasek Polytechnic, UniSim, Raffles and Kaplan competed for the top 6 spots to represent Singapore in the regional finals.

We are proud to have the following students competing in this competition; Team Ware-Haul-One: Amadea Yulina, Stephen Das, Cristian Herianus, Enita, Zhao Ziyue

Team Diver5e: Aimjit Ponwatparisorn , Shin Yulbeg, Lee Sai Yang, Chua Xin Yi, Emelia Hendyati

Team FRESH – B: Zheng Zhihui, Deng Anni, Gao Jing, Jiang Sifan, Gong Pichao

Bubble Soccer kicked off on a Saturday evening, 24th September 2016. A total of 33 participants in teams of five suited up in plastic bubble suits got ready for some kicking action. With teams strategizing their efforts in defence and attack, it was a hilarious sight to see players falling over repeatedly, rolling around and trying hard to get up after they have been knocked down by their opponents.

Organised by the Chinese Student International (CSI) club, this event saw plenty of sweat and rolling good fun!

On Saturday, 8th October, the HERO (Help Everyone Reach Out) Club volunteered in “Stamp Out Stigma”, an event that hoped to raise mental health awareness of the public. It was in collaboration with the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

The event started with a walk, which the public took part in, in representation of stamping out the stigma related to mental illness. There were various performances and games arranged as well. Kaplan Dance Club performed a Salsa and Hip Hop number and Kaplan Photography Club also participated in capturing memories of the event. It was an overall enriching experience!

At HERO Club, students and staff in Kaplan are given the opportunity to participate in community service and volunteering programmes. Regardless of showing care to the elderly or bringing joy and hope to children with physical disabilities, we hope to make a difference in someone else’s life. In return, we are enriched with knowledge and experiential exposures to our modern social needs and issues.Come join us now!

Summer. Fresh. Fun. These three words simply described our

“Get Together Day” event which was held on September 17, 2016 at Palawan Beach, Sentosa to welcome Indonesian freshmen whose intake was between July and September 2016. “We were once freshmen ourselves and we do understand that studying abroad might be quite challenging, especially for those who left their families back home and were in a foreign country alone, for the first time. It is why we decided to hold the second Get Together Day; We hope that the freshmen could make new friends through this event,” said Margareta Anastasia, the President of Pelikan Club.

With a total of 36 freshmen from many different majors and provinces, there were six groups which were formed with a team leader from the Pelikan committee. By the time the freshmen arrived at Palawan Beach, they realized that they were required to find their team mates and team leaders in an extraordinary way.

In order to find their teammates, they executed various moves related to their team name. For example, team squat; participants needed to squat down and gather together as a team. After the teams were joined respectively, the committee issued a hint to find the team leader.

The first game required team members to move a ball using a

paper. Each member in a team was given a piece of paper for this race. With teamwork and patience, the ball was able to hit the finish line.

The second game was a game of water relay. Only one member from each team at any time was allowed to run and fetch water from the sea with a cup filled with holes. The team that collected the most water was the winner. The last game was a three-ways tug-of-war.

As everyone enjoyed their dinner of ayam penyet as dinner, winners were announced. Congratulations to Team Jumping Jacks for emerging as the winner, winning themselves Starbucks voucher, Team Lompat for coming in second and Team Jalan di Tempat as the favourite team.

We would like to express our gratitude for those who participated in our welcome party. The event was delightful, thanks to all of you. See you at our next event!

“The Dreadful Night” held on 12th September 2016 once again marks another successful year-end event by Vietnamese Community at Kaplan Singapore (VNCK). The event was conceptualised as a horror escape room in conjunction with a Halloween theme.

“The Dreadful Night” challenges the bravest ghost hunters out there and offers up a bevy of scares via its collection of 5 ghost houses – each house theme represents famous horror films as well as several original concepts. Ever questioning yourself to be brave enough to hang around with Haunted Mother bellowing her miserably lost child? Or have you ever realised your heartbeat racing fast while finding

your way out of the dark maze with a Vietnamese spirit lurking near her unsuspecting victims? There was, indeed, a lot of screaming and yelling but there was a lot of exciting laughter and the brightest smiles as well after the successful escapes from the haunted rooms.

“The Dreadful Night” is the very first event by VNCK which involves a lot of work, from the intricate room decorations to the ghouls’ make up. Thanks to a spectacular team, VNCK was able to complete all the necessary preparation within 5 hours. This demonstrated the organising team’s potential ability to handle the most challenging event concept which successfully left a fun experience for the participants.

Kaplan Dance Club had our first ever Salsa by the beach cohesion on the 18th of September. It was solely organised with the goal to allow the flexibility of our dancers to dance in public and make them adaptable to a different environment. Additionally, it was a good chance to get members outside of dance class and know them on a more personal level.

The group gathered and started with a walk from the boardwalk with music played from the speakers. It was a good way to pump up the members to get them energised for the day. We had ice breaking session while having lunch. It was funny how everyone was a little shy in introducing themselves. During the ice breaking session, we had a great opportunity to dance Salsa since the weather was not too hot.

After our Salsa session, groups were split for a game of Frisbee. This activity showed everyone how well the dancers coordinated and worked together as a team and played their best.

Dinner was fantastic with everyone laughing and bonding well with one another. Under the night sky, another session of Salsa was held and we did a dance roulette. This gave the dancers to fuse Hip Hop and Salsa in their routine.

The Kaplan Dance Club holds a strong bond. If you are interested to join us in this happy family, do approach the Student Affairs office at PoMo, Level 6 (next to classroom 603). Join our facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/Kaplandanceclub/
