The English Department announces
The DePhillips Great Courses Essay Contest
The Great Courses Series presents audio and video lectures covering a wide range of academic
topics, from music to economics to chemistry. Through the generous donation of ALC bene-
factor Mr. Willard DePhillips, our students have access to these materials. This essay contest
asks students to use the video lectures to pursue topics of interest to them for individual study
and writing. Generous cash awards are available for the best essays.
The focus for this year’s contest will be humanities courses. Students may view and incorporate
lectures from the areas of music, literature, art, and philosophy. Video lectures can be accessed
at the McGaw Library. They may be checked out, for one week, using a valid student ID.
Submission deadline: Monday, March 26. Submit a hard copy of your essay to the English De-
partment by 4:00 pm.
Criteria for Submission:
The essay must:
Be at least eight pages long, but no more than twelve pages.
Use the video lectures and course guidebooks as support.
Cite at least three video lectures.
Guidebooks contain a lecture synopsis, outline, and questions to consider for each topic.
Be based upon the “questions to consider” for each lecture provided in the course guidebooks.
Demonstrate a clear thesis, strong development and support, effective organization, aware-
ness of academic audience, and clear, grammatically correct prose style.
Provide adequate documentation of video courses and guidebooks, using a documentation
style appropriate to the discipline of focus.
Use no more than three additional sources. Any source employed must be of sound academic
quality.
Contain no plagiarism. Any incidence of plagiarism in the essay will result in automatic disqual-
ification.
Be formatted in Times New Roman 12 point font, typed and double spaced.
Judging to be done by selected panel of faculty. Winners will be announced on Honors Day,
Tuesday, April 10.

Riddle Answer:
The key to the solution is the fact
that “6” and “9” are the same charac-
ter. One cube would contain the
numbers 0,1,2,3,4, and 5. The other
cube would contain the numbers
0,1,2,6,7, and 8. Even though there
is no day “00” a zero is needed on
both cubes in order to make all of
the days between “01” and “09”.
There are many alternate configura-
tions that also will produce all of the
days of the month.
