namingwasapprovedonJanuary18,2007bytheMichiganStateUniversityBoardofTrusteesinrecognitionofasubstantialcontributionforthefacilityfromalumnusAmbassadorPeterF.Secchiaandothers.
“TheSecchiaCenterwillbringtolifeafour-yearmedicalschoolinGrandRapidsaswellasaone-of-a-kindmodelformedicaleducationandresearchinthe21stcentury,”saidMSUPresidentLouAnnaK.Simon.ThisnewapproachblendskeyelementsofaclassicmedicaleducationcenterwithMSU’straditionalstrengthincommunity-basedmedicaleducation.
“AmbassadorSecchia’sgiftistheessentialcatalystfortheevolutionandexpansionoftheCollegeofHumanMedicineforanewcentury,”PresidentSimonsaid.“Wearecreatingsomethingveryspecialherebybringingaworldclass
universitytobearondevelopingmedicaleducationinGrandRapidsandbyusingthisopportunitytoadvancethepowerofgenomicmedicine.Thisventurewillsignificantlyincreaseouractivityinre-search,bothinGrandRapidsandEastLansing.”

ThevanAndelinstitute,SpectrumHealth,SaintMary’sHealthSystemandGrandvalleyStateUniversityeachhaverecentlyannouncedimportantpartner-shipswithMichiganStateUniversityassociatedwitheitherlandacquisitionorfutureprograms.GrandAction,anon-profitorganizationof250communityleaderscommittedtothegrowthandnationalrecognitionofGrandRapids,andMSUwilllaunchacapitalcampaigntoraisetheremaining$20millionna-tionallyandfromtheWestMichigancommunitytocoverthedevelopmentandconstructioncostsassociatedwiththefacility.

ofBloomfieldHills,Michigan.ThedonationrepresentstheleadgiftfortheduffydaughertyFootballBuildingexpansion,aprojectexpectedtogetunderwaythisspring.Thegiftbringsthetotalraisedforthe$12millionprojectto$8.7million.“Thishistoricandmuch-appreciatedgiftprovidesdramaticmomentumandmovesthisprojectforwardsignificantly,”saiddirectorofintercollegiateAthleticsRonMason.

TheSecchiaCenterwillincluderesearchandteachinglaboratories,classrooms,officesandstu-dentareas.MichiganState’sCollegeofHumanMedicineisslatedtoenrollitsfirstclassof100first-yearstudentsinGrandRapidsin2010,whenthenewfacilityopens.Thecollegewillalsocontin-uetoenrollfour-yearclassesinEastLansingandtoplacetheresidentsfromitsprogramsthrough-outthestate.
“AmbassadorSecchiahasbeenagenerousfriendandlong-timedonortoMichiganStateUniversity,”saidPresidentSimon.“Hisvolunteer-ismandcontributionsdatebacknearly50years.HecurrentlyservesasamemberofthePresident’sCampaignCabinetforThe Campaign for MSU. overtheyears,hehashostedandsponsoreddoz-ensofuniversityeventsandchairedseveralcampusbuildingprojects.
“Wearegratefulforhiscontinuedsupport,par-ticularlyasweestablishthenewhomeoftheCol-legeofHumanMedicineandsetacourseforitsresearchagendaandinnovativecurriculum.PeterwasapioneeringproponentoftheideaofhousingtheschoolinGrandRapids.”
“Thisisaonce-in-a-lifetimeopportunitytocombinemycommitmentstotheuniversityandtothecommunityilove,”saidSecchia.“itrulybelievethiswillhaveameaningfulimpactthatwillliveonforgenerationstocome.”
TheSecchiafamilytremendouslyvalueseduca-tion.JoanSecchia(Education,’64)taughtintheRockfordandEastGrandRapidspublicschools.SherecentlyservedaspresidentoftheGrandRapidsPublicSchoolsStudentAdvancementFoundationandledthedrivetoraise$1.7milliontorestockmorethan40publicschoollibraries.Shecurrentlyservesonthefundraisingcommit-teetoraiseinexcessof$100millionfortheHelendevosChildren’sHospital.TheSecchiashavefourchildrenandfivegrandchildren.
ChairmanEmeritusofUniversalForestProductsinc.,SecchiabeganhisservicewithUFPiin1962,graduatingfromMSUwithabachelor’sdegreeineconomicsthefollowingyear.WhileatUFPi,hehelpedopen102manufacturingplants.SecchiaservedasU.S.Ambassadortoitalyfrom1989to1993.
inaddition,SecchiahasheldleadershippositionsontheboardsofoldKentFinancial,oldKentBank,RiverCityFoods,StelterPartnersandtheManufacturedHousinginstitute.Hehasvolunteeredinlocal,stateandnationalpoliticalandcharitablework,hasservedonthelibraryfoundationboardsestablishedbytwopresidents,GeraldR.FordandGeorgeH.W.Bush,andwasselectedbyformerGovernorJohnEnglertoheadacommissiontoreevaluategovernmentservices.HispersonalphilanthropyandfundraisingeffortshaveaidedmanyGrandRapidscauses—youths,parks,economicdevelopment,healthcareandculturalenrichmentandeducation,amongmanyothers.
Secchiahasearnedanumberoflifetimeachievementawardsduringthelast15years,including:Michigan’sMasterEntrepreneuroftheyear;Crain’s Detroit Business,Businessmanoftheyear;EconomicClubofGrandRapids,BusinessPersonoftheyear;nationalitalianAmericanFoundation,SpecialAchievementAward;Republicofitaly,CavalierediGranCroce(TheKnightoftheGreatCross);MichiganStateUniversity’sBroadBusinessSchooloutstandingAlumnus;MichiganStateUniversity’sdistinguishedAlumnus;andtheSmithsonianinstituteAwardasanationalScholar.

ChuckSleeper,seniorassociateathleticsdirectorfordevelopment,saidthegifthashadanacceleratingeffectonothercommitmentstotheproject.“Wehavehadagreatresponsetothisproject,thanksinlargeparttoBobandJulie’sleadership,andweareconfidentseveralothermajorgiftswillbemade.TheSkandalarisgiftwillhavealong-lastingimpactnotonlyonourfootballprogram,butonourentireathleticsprogram.ThisgifthasraisedthephilanthropicbarforMSUAthletics.”
PresidentLouAnnaK.SimonexpressedherappreciationfortheSkandalarisgifttotheuniversity.“MSUisseekingtransformationalgiftsinallareas,”shesaid,“andthemagnificentgenerosityofBobandJulieisveryimportanttoTeamMSU.”

CecilandClareMackeyfeltthetimewasrighttomakeasignificantandmeaningfulgifttotheSchoolofMusic,consideringthattheiRACharitableRollover—anewincentiveforcharitablegiving—isineffectfor2006and2007.ThePensionProtectionActof2006allowsdonors,age70½orolder,todirectadistributionfromaTraditionalorRothiRAtogodirectlytoaqualifiedcharitywithalimitof$100,000peryear.Thecharityimmediatelybenefitsfromthegift,andthedonorisabletomakeasimpletransferwithaninstantimpact.TheMackeysdecidedtotakeadvantageofthisnewgiftopportunitywhendocumentingtheirgifttotheSchoolofMusicduringThe Campaign for MSU.

accomplishments,loveofmusic,andcommitmenttothemusicalarts.Anaccomplishedsingerandflutist,ClareearnedaB.S.(withhighesthonors)andanM.S.inmusiceducation,bothin1955,attheUniversityofillinois.Shethentaughtmusicinthepublicschools,andsubsequentlyearnedamaster’sofmusicdegreeinvoiceatMichiganStateUniversityin1987.Shehasbeenavocalsoloistinthemid-Michiganarea,alongtimememberoftheMSUChoralUnion,andwasthealtosoloistatPeoplesChurchinEastLansingfor16years.
AtirelesssupporterofvocalartsontheMSUcampusandinthebroadercommunity,andanactiveproponentofthearts,ClarehasbeenaneffectiveliaisonbetweenWhartonCenterforthePerformingArtsandtheSchoolofMusic,facilitatingatalentedgroupofpre-concertspeakers.inherroleasFirstLadyofMSU,Clare,togetherwithherhusbandCecil,MSU’s16thpresident,providedstrongandsupportiveleadershipthatenabledthemusicalartstothriveatMichiganState.

staffandstudentswhowillworkwiththeKelloggFoundation,theparticipatingcommunities,andrelevantstate,nationalandnon-governmentalentities.Together,theywillprovidetechnicalassistance,createstateandnationalnetworks,informpolicy,leverageresources,
buildmomentum,andcatalyzechangeinsystemssupportinghealthy,localfoodandfitness.
Someofthekeyactivitiesthatdr.Hamm’steamwillundertakeinclude:
• Coordinatinganddevelopinglinkagesamongparticipatingcommunitiesandbetweenthecommunitiesandstateandnationalresources.
• Providingtechnicalassistanceonfoodsystemissues.(Food systemencompassesallprocessesfromfieldthroughconsumption—growing,processing,packaging,distributing,preparing,andeating—aswellashandlingwasteatallpointsinthesystem.)
• ManagingtheFoodandFitnessnationalAdvisoryCommittee,whichwilladvisetheW.K.KelloggFoundationandserveasaconduittoprofessionalconstituenciestoexpandtheimpactoftheprogramtoothercommunities.

centralfocusbecauseofitsimportancetothefutureoftheuniversity.Endowmentsenablefundstogrowinperpetuity,benefitinggenerationsupongenerationsofSpartansintheirpursuitofexcellenceineducation.
Endowedfundsdifferfromothersinthatthetotalamountofthegiftisinvested.Eachyear,onlyaportionoftheinterestearnedisspentwhiletheremainderrevertstoprincipal.inthisrespect,anendowmentisaperpetualgift.Thissteadystreamoffundingprovidestheassurancetheuniversityneedstorecruitandretainthebestandbrighteststudentsandfaculty,provideaccesstothemostcontemporaryeducationpossible,andgrowandnurturethoseareasofresearchandscholarshiptowhichithascommitted.Alwaysequatedwithexcellenceandlong-termstrength,endowmentsareabsolutelyessentialifMSUistoremainaleaderineducation,researchandservice.

PriscillaHamiltonTaylorandJasonTaylorofMountainview,California,havemadeagiftof$125,000toMichiganStateUniversityPress.TheirgiftwillcreatetheRuthSimmsHamiltonAfricandiasporaSeriesEndowment,whichwillgenerateannualrevenuetosupportthepublicationofscholarlyresearchinthefieldoftheAfricandiasporabyMSUPress.
Ms.Taylor’smother,RuthSimmsHamilton,wasaprofessoratMichiganStateUniversityfor35years.Shetaughtcoursesoninternationalinequalityanddevelopment,comparativeracerelations,internationalmigrationanddiasporas,ThirdWorldurbanizationandchange,and
sociologicaltheory.ShewasdirectoroftheAfricandiasporaResearchProject,andacorefacultymemberoftheAfricanStudiesCenterandCenterforLatinAmericanandCaribbeanStudies.
Atthetimeofherdeathinnovember2003,dr.HamiltonwasfinalizingplansfortheAfricandiasporaResearchProjectSeriesatMSUPress.Thefirstvolumeinthatseries,Routes of Passage: Rethinking the African Diaspora,waspublishedinnovember2006.Contributorstothevolumepresentworkinthefieldsofanthropology,history,sociology,libraryscience,andlinguistics.Routes of Passageprovidesaconceptual,substantive,andempiricalorientationtothestudyofAfricanpeopleworldwide,includingissuesofgeographicalmobility,geosocialdisplacement,andchangingcultural,political,andeconomicrelationshipsbetweenAfricaanditsdiaspora.
“MymotherhadalongcareeratMichiganStateUniversity,andaveryproductiverelationshipwithMichiganStateUniversityPress,”Ms.Taylorsaid.“MyfamilyandiarepleasedthatherscholarlylegacywillbecontinuedwiththepublicationofnewscholarshipthroughtheAfricandiasporaResearchProjectSeries.itisanhonorforustoenablethatseriesbycreatingthisendowment.”

amanagerwithCiscoSystems,inc.inSanJose,California.Ms.Taylor’sfather,thelateJamesB.Hamilton,wasprofessorofChemistryandassistantprovostforUndergraduateEducationatMSU.HewasinstrumentalinestablishingthedepartmentnowknownastheResourceCenterforPersonswithdisabilities.
MSUPressplanstoreleaseasecondvolumeintheseriesinFall2007.Publicationof
thatvolume,andsubsequentseriesvolumes,willbemadepossiblebytherevenuegeneratedfromthe
endowmentcreatedbytheTaylors’gift.TheTaylorsandMSUPressintendtoincreasethesizeofthe
endowmentto$875,000byinvitingcontributionsfromotherindividuals,includingscholarsintheAfricandiaspora.
dr.FredricC.Bohm,directorofMSUPress,said,“WearethrilledwiththeTaylors’decisiontoprovidephilanthropic
supportforthisimportantseries.ProfessorHamilton’sresearchwasgroundbreaking,anditisaprivilegeforourpressto
contributetofurtheringresearchinAfricandiasporicstudies.”
MichiganStateUniversityPress,theuniversity’sscholarlypublishingarm,celebratesits60thanniversarythisyear.itpublishestenscholarlyjournalsand,eachyear,issuessome40newtitlesinthearts,humanities,sciences,andsocialsciences.

“Myparentshavebeenthegreatestinspirationinmylifesimplybythewaytheylived,theirworkethic,theirintegrity,theirvaluesystemandtheirloveandsupportforalloftheirchildren,”saidLynn(nelson)Myers(Marketing,’64;M.B.A.,’67),asshedescribedthereasonsforchoosingtoestablishanendowedscholarshipintheirnamesattheEliBroadCollegeofBusiness.
Lynn’sparents,victorandAltanelson,raisedafamilyofsevenchildren.originally,thefamilyfarmedintheUpperPeninsulaofMichigan.TheylaterlivedandworkedinsoutheastMichiganformanyyears.in1999,Lynn’sfatherpassedaway.Today,AltanelsononceagainmakesherhomeintheUpperPeninsula.
Establishedin2006,thevictorandAltanelsonScholarshipFundwillprovideassistancetoBroadSchoolstudentswithfinancialneed
andwillgivepreferencetothosewhohaveparticipatedincommunityserviceactivities.

Madepossiblebya$385,000grantfromtheCarnegieCorporationofnewyork,thisresearchprojectwilllookatfirst-andsecond-yearteachersinfiveMichiganschooldistricts,eachofwhichservesmorethan10,000studentsandhasmorethan40%ofitsstudentpopulationeligibleforfreeorreduced-pricelunch.

“Wewanttogaugeboththeproductiveandcounterproductivestrategiesthatbeginningteachersencounterthroughmentorships,socialnetworksandotherinduction-relatedefforts.”
dr.Thumsaidthestudyisdesignedtoinformtwonationallyimportantpolicygoals:toimprovetheretentionofnewelementaryandmiddleschoolteachersinurban,high-povertysettings;andtostrengthencomponentsofteacherinductionthathaveastronglinktostudentachievement.“itisimportanttoknowwhatisworkingeffectively,”hesaid,“tohelpdedicatedteachersremainintheprofessionforwhichtheytrainedand,moreimportantly,togivetheirpupilsasolidfoundationforachievementintheclassroom.”

veterinaryTeachingHospital(vTH).Foster,bestknownasco-founderofthepopularDoctors Foster and Smithveterinarycatalogs,sharesseveralreasonsforthecouple’sgenerouscontribution.
“ihavealwaysplacedasignificantvalueoneducation—yougetoutofitwhatyouputintoit,”dr.Fostersaid.“igraduatedfromtheveterinarycollegeatatimewhenthepetindustryandpetownerswerereadyforpethealthcarealternatives.ielectedtocatertothesealternativestotrytomakealivingandatthesametimekeeppethealthcarewithintheveterinaryprofession.

dr.Foster,50,grewupinAllegan,Michigan,nearKalamazoo.Hedecidedonacareerinveterinarymedicineatage15.Hewasespeciallyinspiredbyhisolderbrother,dr.RoryFoster(dvM,’74).dr.Foster’sownpathtookalittlelonger.“iappliedthreetimesbeforetheyacceptedme,”hesaid.Buthisgraduationin1983wasbittersweet:thatyear,RoryFosterwasdiagnosedwithALS,knownasLouGehrig’sdisease.
RoryFosterdiedin1987,butthebrothershadafewyearspracticingtogetherinruralWisconsin,alongwithdr.MartySmithofiowa.itwasRoryFosterwhofirstnoticedthatpeoplewerebeginningtobuyveterinarymedicinesandproductsingrocerystoresandincatalogspublishedbynon-veterinarians.“Weasked,‘Whylosethisbusinesstothenon-veterinarysectors?’”dr.Fosterrecalled.
ThatwasthebeginningofDoctors Foster and Smithveterinarycatalogandabusinesslargerthanevendr.Fostercouldhaveimagined.Today,thecompanypublishes55millioncatalogsayear,has700employeesandposts$235millioninannualsales.in1998,Doctors Foster and SmithwentonlinewithwebsitessuchasLiveAquaria.comandPetEducation.com,wherepetownerscanfindeverythingfromarticlesaboutcatsurgeryandcaninesocialbehaviortogoodpricesonfishandhermitcrabs—hisbiggestseller(hesells“hundredsofthousands”ofthemeachyear).dr.Fosterhasauthoredfourbooks,aswell.
TheFostershavefourchildren.WhilethecouplelivesinWisconsin,theymaintainstrongbondswithMSU’sCollegeofveterinary
Medicine—andthosebondsconsistofmorethanlargechecks.dr.FosterservesonthevTHBoardofdirectors,andhesaid,“ifeelthatipersonallyhavemuchthaticanofferthevTH.itisimportanttometoprovidetimeandexpertiseaswellasfinancing.ThevTHallowsmetogiveboth,andforthatiamgrateful.”
Likemanydonors,dr.Fostercanpinpointthegenesisofhislastingloyaltytothecollege’steachinghospital:theprofessorswhonurturedhimandevenhelpedhimwhenhemostneededit.Herecalledthetimeasafirst-yearCvMstudent,whilerunningabeekeepingbusinessthathelpedpayforcollegeexpenses,hehadamid-termatthesametimehehadtofulfillsome“pollinationcontracts.”“iwasmovingbeesintotheblueberriesandapplesforpollination,”heexplained.Thekindprofessorunderstoodandlethimtakethemid-termlater.
Today,theCvMstaffisjustassupportive,dr.Fosteracknowledged.“Therearesomevisionariessuchasformerdeandr.LonnieKing,dr.JanKrehbiel,andthehospitaldirector,dr.PatLeblanc,whoinfluencedmydecisiontogivetoCvM.TheysharemyvisionandenthusiasminmakingtheveterinarystudentsatopprioritywithinthevTH.
“StudentsaretheverybackboneofthevTH’sexistence,”saiddr.Foster.“Wehopeourdonationhelpsimprovetheireducationaswellastheprofessionforveterinarians,petsandpetowners.”

Theduffyprojectseekstocompletelyoverhaulthefootballpracticefacility,includingthepositionmeetingrooms,coaches’offices,HallofFameandweightroom,amongotherareas.$100,000ofthegiftwillenablethemtonametheJillandGaryWitzenburgQuarterbacksMeetingRoom.
Theremaining$125,000isearmarkedfortheirpreviouslyestablishedKenThompsonEndowedScholarshipFundforFootball,namedafterJill’slatefather,whowasa1930graduate,1966-74MSUTrusteeandbigSpartanfan.Thisgiftwillcompletethefundingforafullscholarshipendowmentforafootballplayer.
Jillacknowledged,“TheduffydaughertyprojectisnecessarytoreturningSpartanfootballtonationalprominence.Theendowmentisatributetomyfather’spassionandsupportforSpartanfootball.”
