Jesus helps his followers understand that gathering
material wealth doesn’t gain you anything in the
kingdom of heaven. It’s possible to have material
wealthy but have a heart that is far from God. God’s
intention for us is that we would be rich toward him,
meaning that we don’t base our decisions purely on
what we can gain and we don’t put our confidence in
material possessions.
The things we have are a gift from God and should
be used in a way that honors God.

RECTOR’S LETTER Living a Thank-filled Life
Back in the late 1980’s and into the mid-1990’s I went through what I call my Country Music Phase. I’m sure living in Texas for 3 years helped fuel that fire. I once heard a country song entitled, I Just Want to Live until I Die. At first that title may sound funny, but if you say it the right way and put the emphasis on the right word, it has a profound message. I Just Want To Live Until I Die. In other words, I want to experience life....I want to enjoy life while on this earth.
Back when I was a teacher in Pennsylvania, I met another teacher named Leo. Leo was one of (if not the) most “positive” people I have ever known. Leo’s faith in Jesus was very strong and he lived his life thanking God in any and every situation. He shared with me a time when he had a flat tire. Where most of us would sit there and curse our luck and add a few expletives, Leo, after pulling off on the side of the road, looked up and said to God, “Thank you, Lord.” Then as he changed the flat tire, he began to think of all the reasons he should be thankful.
He realized that he was thankful that there was a place wide enough for him to pull over. He was thankful that he had only one flat tire and not two or three. He was thankful that the flat tire had not caused him to have an accident that might have hurt him or someone else. He was thankful for the chance to meet the nice man who stopped to help him. Leo could do something as simple as drop a pencil and turn it into a thanks-giving event! Now some might dismiss Leo as an unrealistic Pollyanna. But, think about it. What’s the alternative when things get fouled up as they sometimes do? Raise your blood pressure a few degrees as you curse your luck? Shout and scream and give everyone around you ulcers? Bottle it all up until you get sick? Wouldn’t it just be better to do what Leo does and give thanks to God in all things? You and I would live longer if we did; and we would probably enjoy life more, too.
I Just Want To Live Until I Die. That phrase is more than just another Country song. It can become a goal or a personal mission statement that says, “I want to experience life...I want each and every day to count for something.” At one point in his ministry, Jesus said, “I have come so that you might have life, and have it abundantly.” Leo experienced that abundant life, even in challenging times, through his faith in Jesus. You can too, if you choose to.
Peace and Love,
John+
