EDITORIAL NOTES: Welcome to the summer edition of CHAMPAGN-E-VENTS. A number of reports and photographs have been gathered which outline some of the recent Club activities. These submissions are greatly appreciated, especially given that everyone has a busy summer schedule. There are numerous events coming up this fall, with the Canadian Championship being a particular highlight. Please consider taking a few notes and photographs when attending these events, so that you can share your experience in a future newsletter. We can certainly use more input from more sources. This will add variety and interest to the newsletter content. The fourth issue of CHAMPAGN-E-VENTS for the year will be distributed in November. Please forward your submissions by October 16, 2013. PRESIDENT’S REPORT Summer 2013

I want to thank our members that have been helping out with the cleanup following the disastrous flooding in Calgary

and High River. What a terrible time for all and especially our hardest hit members Jamie Kinghorn and Lory Desrosiers.

Once again we were able to fly in Drumheller, with 2 successful flights out of 4 possible. A big thank you goes out to

Linda Then for organizing the dinner at Athens Greek Restaurant on Friday evening, Sharon and Gary for organizing the

coffee each morning, and Susan at the Travelodge for hosting the barbeque on Saturday afternoon.

The Rimbey Balloon Festival was a great time even though we only flew 2 out of 5 flights and 1 balloon glow. Cliff,

Gary and Lynn put a lot of work into organizing this and hats off to you all. Del was the overall winner of the event and

his article about the event is in this newsletter.

The Tradeshows at Rimbey and Calgary Lifestyle Recreation Expo went extremely well and had many members

volunteer for shifts, set up and tear down. Brant was kind enough to transport our extra basket to these events for

display purposes. A photographer in Rimbey used our basket in front of a “green” screen and projected Dale Ritchie’s

balloon on all photographs. The tradeshow attendees had a great time with this and it was very successful.

Father’s Day at the Museum was a success with over 1600 people attending between 10 am and 4 pm. The Club had

volunteers to man our booth inside the museum and Garry Lockyer brought his balloon to display outside. Thank you

all for making this a success!

The Carseland Aggie Days tether and flights did not happen this year as it was scheduled for June 22, the day after the

floods. Hopefully we will be invited back next year to attend.

The Kamp Kiwanis tether was a success on July 1st with perfect weather for a tether. We were not positive this event

was going to happen as only days earlier the location was under 4 feet of water, but with the warm weather it all dried

out nicely.

There are still many events coming up; I hope members will be able to attend some of these events. Plan your

schedule now!

- A-J Flying Ranch – July 27th; Billings Balloon Festival – August 1st to 4th ; Club Barbeque – August 8th ; Hespero

Annual Balloon Race – August 30th to September 2nd ; Drumheller – September 13th – 15th ; Road Clean-Up –

September 21st ; Canadian National Championship – September 25th to 29th ; Albuquerque Balloon Festival –

October 4th to 13th ; Raven – October 18th to 20th

A few people have been asking if we are still having the Canadian Championship in High River and the answer is YES.

The Heritage Inn is still behind us along with the Town of High River. We are still looking for volunteers. Please

contact me if you will be able to help out.

Cat T. will be sending clothing to the seamstress to be embroidered with the Club logo. This time please buy your own

T-Shirt or clothing item you want the logo on and bring it to the Club barbeque on August 8th with $14.00 for each item

to be embroidered.

This year the deadline for calendar pictures is September 15th so please send all pictures to Cat T. so that she and her

committee members can put together this year’s calendar. Also, the theme is not only balloon events, but any

scenery pictures from trips members have recently taken.

I hope to see members during the remaining summer events and at our next Club meeting – September 11, 2013.

THE DROP LINE/TRAIL ROPE – A TEAM EFFORT

This piece of equipment is referred to as both the drop line and trail rope. I refer to it as the drop

line in this article.

The drop line is a very integral part of the balloon equipment but can also be a hazard if not used

properly. Both pilot and crew play a vital role in its use. The drop line is used to assist the pilot in

maneuvering the balloon into a preferred space, clear of obstructions, with the assistance of crew

members on the ground. Normally it is only used in light wind conditions as it is almost impossible

to provide assistance using a drop line if the balloon is moving quickly.

First let us look at the drop line in the basket. Make sure you know exactly where it’s stored, that

it’s easily accessible and can be deployed with minimum delay. The end of the line should have a

carabiner attached to it ready to hook on to the burner frame at the point where a tether rope

would normally be connected. DO NOT ATTACH THE CARABINER TO A ROPE HANDLE. Go

through the motions so you know exactly how to attach and deploy the drop line with minimum

delay. If the need for a drop line landing is anticipated, it can be hooked up in advance.

Before dropping the line make absolutely certain it is not wrapped around a fuel hose, passenger or

any equipment in the basket. As has been evidenced before, dire consequences can result if the

drop line breaks a fuel hose or tank fitting. Before deploying the line make sure your crew is

waiting below to render assistance. I remember one time dropping the line before the crew arrived

hoping that people in the park below would assist me in grabbing the line. No matter how much I

yelled at them to grab the line they just stood there in bewilderment. No doubt afraid to do the

wrong thing. That’s understandable.

The crew should grab the rope but never wrap it around a tree, post or anything stationary and

never wrap it around your waist. Damage can occur to both the object on the ground and the

balloon because of the weight and momentum when the balloon is brought to a sudden stop. Also

be careful when you drop the line to make sure it clears any obstructions below. I had a crew

person drop the line intending to do so after crossing a high voltage power line, instead misjudging

and dropping it before crossing the line. It snaked its way across the wires while I envisioned it

becoming tangled in the cables. Not a good feeling. Also if the landing is not successful either bring

the line in as quickly as possible or drop it for the crew to retrieve to prevent it from being dragged

across obstructions downwind.

One more word of caution to the pilot, something I found from past experience. When a balloon is

stopped in its forward motion it has a tendency to descend. To compensate for this, some heat must

be added. In my case, by the time the crew had stopped the balloon I was over top of some

warehouses. They pulled me back to the field but in the meantime I almost made a landing on top

of the roof. Probably not a serious outcome but certainly would have made for an awkward

retrieval.

It’s comforting to look down to see the crew below ready to assist with a drop line landing should it

be needed. THANK YOU CREW.

Canadian Balloon Association

March 24, 2013

The CBA Annual General Meeting was held in Calgary on March 24, 2013 at the Aero Space Museum.

Highlights of this meeting are:

- CBA Bylaws and Operations Manual approved

- CBA gave approval and sanction for the High River Balloon Events Committee to host the Canadian Championship in High River September 25th to 29th

- Competition Support Award was presented the first time since 2000 when Lucien Desbiens was presented the award. This year it was presented to Lory Desrosiers for all her work and dedication in working with past Canadian Championships.

- The Joan Martin Award was presented to Dennis Myrthu in 2004 but the CBA did not have the trophy at that time, Dennis only received a plaque to keep.

- This year the Joan Martin Award was presented to Sandra Rolfe for all her record attempts under section 4. ADVANCEMENT OF OUR SPORT - RECORDS Internationally, Canadian balloon pilots are recognized by our successes in breaking records and winning international competitive events. Under this section we should recognize individuals who have established significant international records. Below is a picture of Dennis presenting this award to Sandra beside the Joan Martin display.

Drumheller Happening

- April 2013

The Club’s annual spring Drumheller event was held the

weekend of April 26-28. Club members started to arrive

at the Drumheller Travelodge early Friday afternoon in

anticipation of an eventful weekend, even if the weather

did not cooperate. Winds that weekend were very brisk

and we were not sure if we would be able to fly at all.

High winds on Friday evening prevented any flights so about 20+ members, families and friends headed across

the street to the Athens Greek Restaurant where we all enjoyed a good meal. After dinner we all returned to

the motel to share a few stories and drinks before bed in hope of an early morning flight. Saturday turned out

to be a beautiful morning with very light winds. Seven balloons launched into the early morning sky from the

ball diamonds. As it turned out the winds were light and variable which allowed the pilots to maneuver

around the area over Drumheller and land in the valley. Some pilots managed to land back in the launch area,

much to the delight of their crews.

After the morning flight everyone returned to the motel for the

traditional champagne toasts and then headed off to either

Humpty’s or WHIFS for breakfast. All were on their own for the

rest of the afternoon until the evening BBQ.

Unfortunately the winds picked up later in the afternoon which

made the BBQ a bit interesting, as it was a challenge to keep

things from blowing off the table. Thirty or more people

attended the Club sponsored BBQ, which once again was hosted

by Susan and her team from the Travelodge. Needless to say

the evening flight was cancelled. After the BBQ a number of

people headed off to the Last Chance Saloon in Wayne for a beverage or two before calling it a night.

Sunday morning turned out to be another great day for flying, with light winds down in the valley. Launching

once again from the ball diamonds the balloons floated over Drumheller and slowly made their way across the

river to the opposite shore. Most landed in the valley, but a couple of adventurous pilots made their way to

the top of the valley before touching down.

After the flight everyone returned to the motel to pop the corks

on the champagne and toast another successful flight.

Afterwards everyone helped clean up, packed their belongings,

checked out of the motel and went down to East Coulee for a

tasty pancake breakfast before driving back home.

My name is Jayme Leatherdale, I am 3 years old, the second youngest CBC Member; my little brother, Jagger is

the youngest. I am the youngest passenger that my Daddy, Brant Leatherdale, has taken in his hot air balloon.

Daddy has been trying to get me in the balloon since Sylvan Lake 2012. I wasn’t going at that time - no way –

geez, I was only 2 years old!

We went for our bi-yearly trip to Drumheller, April 2013, and my Mommy, Tara, asked Daddy if she could go up

for a ride sometime during the weekend. My Mommy is usually busy looking after my brother and me so it is hard

for her to be a passenger. I piped up and said “I want to go with Mommy” (I always say that). Uncle Dirk and

Auntie Gwen were kind enough to look after Jaggy in the chase vehicle and Mommy and I went up with Daddy. I

had to wear my hot pink Baby Banz ear muffs because when Daddy “puts hot” in the balloon it is very loud and it

scares me.

We launched from the park and we went up in the air. I looked over and saw Cliff and Sheri’s balloon. Then I

looked down and saw Ice Cube. Then I asked Mommy who the other balloons were and she told me the names of

all the balloons and whose they were. All of a sudden I looked and Cliff’s balloon was going lower and we were

going higher. Soon we were so high that I was beginning to worry. I asked Daddy why we were so high and

everyone else was so low. He said he was trying to turn the balloon. I didn’t understand what he meant, so I just

smiled and nodded. I took this opportunity to take in the sights. I saw the big dinosaur, a water tower, the river,

our hotel and…LOOK…what is that??? I see a playground!!! “Daddy, Daddy, we need to go down, RIGHT NOW.

We need to put the balloon down - right there - see?? There is a park…put the balloon down!!!!” Daddy muttered

something under his breath and then “put some more hot” in the balloon and we landed right where we started.

Uncle Dirk helped me out of the balloon and I ripped those ear muffs off and ran for the playground. It was a

great flight (and a super great playground)! I wonder if next time Daddy can land that balloon at

Disneyland…hmmm…

RIMBEY HOT AIR AFFAIR 2013

There were 13 balloons at this year’s second annual event in Rimbey, which was held May 10, 11 and 12th.

One of the sponsors was the Rimbey Super 8 Hotel, which is a bed and breakfast hotel. The rooms are very

nice and the staff is friendly and accommodating. They supplied a meeting / briefing room and also

sponsored a supper and two lunches for all balloon folk. Wow! They also offered discounted rooms for

balloon associated people such as additional family or crew etc.

A number of other sponsors that made this event possible were:

- The Black Press - Area newspapers who supplied a significant amount of advertising informing

the local population of the event, which was key to its success

- Keyera - Propane for the balloons

- CalGas - Delivered the propane

- Eckrim (Insurance) Agencies - Supplied volunteer T-shirts etc. and meals

- R-Bac - A photography company that covered the event

- Scratchin’ The Surface - Helped with event clothing and was responsible for designing a

clipboard with a collage of pictures for myself for helping with the 2012 event. (I have it hanging

in my office) and one for Stan Wereschuk for winning the Bozo award in 2012. They may have

contributed more, I’m probably just “scratchin’ the surface”.

The weather wasn’t as co-operative as in 2012, but under the

direction of Balloon Meister Dale Ritchie we flew two tasks on

Friday morning and Saturday evening. We tried to glow on

Friday night, but with marginal wind we settled for candle

sticking (burners only). We made up for it with a successful

glow on Saturday night.

Our first flight on Friday morning was a Hare and Hound and

Brant L. and I dropped our markers near the target. Brant was

eventually found to be out of bounds. The second flight on

Saturday evening was a fly-in to a target and daisy picking,

which consisted of picking one or more helium balloons, tied

approximately 4 feet off the ground. No daisies were picked,

however Walt or Linda Then (never know which one is flying)

scored closest to the target. Richard Clark was second and

I was third.

At the end of the event the overall winners were: 1. Del

Michaud, 2. Walt and Linda Then, and 3. Richard Clark. The

“Bozo the Clown” award went to Searle Sheldon who beat out

the runners up by a big margin. He committed an expensive

Bozo offence by burning an unwanted window while flying Cliff

Skocdopole’s balloon. Not only an “ouch” to the pocketbook,

but a major embarrassment as well.

Thanks have to go to Lynn Johnson who has worked way too

hard for the past two years to make this event happen. She

has a few local town folk that help her with a few things and

thanks go to them as well.

Lynn is a relentless organizer, she digs up sponsors and does an over the top job on hitting up businesses for

gift paraphernalia for pilots, crew and volunteers, not to mention the overall organizing of the event. On the

balloon side, Cliff Skocdopole and Gary Fehr helped with Transport Canada paperwork and approvals, pilot

applications and documentation, sponsors, launch site fencing etc., etc. Cliff convinced Skocdopole

Construction to make available the fencing, flag poles and other miscellaneous items. Finally, Dale Ritchie

brought his expertise to the Balloon Meister position. If weather had permitted more flights, knowing Dale,

each task would have been more interesting

and challenging than the last, but still fun.

All in all, from the organization to the location

this is a must attend event. It got off to a great

start and will only get better.

CLOUD IDENTIFICATION:

• While standing around discussing if it was suitable to fly while at the Rimbey event, an experienced pilot was heard to say, “If you can identify five types of clouds, you should probably stay on the ground.”

• With this mature cumulonimbus cloud,

we are all likely on the ground!

BE AWARE!

A recent incident in Australia, highlights the need for care and caution whilst using the inflator fan. The incident involved a woman who was fatally injured when her scarf got caught in the blades of the fan. All crew and passengers should be warned of the dangers that scarves, jacket toggles, draw-strings, loose clothing pose around the fan. In particular, long hair should be contained when standing near the fan. Fans can be a dangerous part of ballooning equipment. Mishandling the fan, moving it carelessly, even tipping it, can unbalance or even cause the blades to shatter. The fan should always be inspected after unloading, before preparing it for use.

great looking booth.

Ballooning – “Come Hell or High Water” With the floods in the Calgary area, the expression “Come Hell or High Water” came to accurately describe the situation. Around June 20th, one local area got 9 inches of rain in 36 hours on to ground that was already soaked from previous rains. Jamie K., one of the area balloonists lives in High River. Guess what, the town lived up to its name. In hours, the water rose above the 100 year levels. Jamie’s balloon trailer had a water mark 5 feet above ground.

Balloonists immediately offered assistance. The balloon trailer was brought to Calgary as soon as it was possible to retrieve it. Work days were organized to see what the damage might be and to do repairs. What we thought might take a couple of hours, took 20+ volunteers 200 person hours over two days. With lots of labour, lots of drinking water, and $50 at the carwash, we had things mostly back together. Food and beverages were available at a BBQ each day. It gave us a break before going back to more cleaning.

When the trailer was opened, we got to see 11 inches of mud that encased the basket. Shovels and wheel barrows were used to get it out. It is difficult to appreciate how the mud got into things. The grains of mud are like flour, flowing into every crack. Gloves that were in a closed plastic box had mud inside the fingers. A big task was cleaning the envelope. It took several people hours to hose down, scrub and dry it.(OK, the water fight took some time). The fan was caked with mud in behind the flywheel and into the electronics, but now it runs better than most of our other fans. Corners of a wicker basket are a great place for mud to collect - thank goodness there were only three corners – made cleaning much easier! Pressure washing and new carpet gave new life to the basket.

Getting the equipment back in shape was a bigger task than any of us realized. Everyone who volunteered should feel good about the help they gave. Thank you. Great to see a community of balloonists and friends come together! RichardRichardRichardRichard

there is a real good chance that Woody and I would have never flown again.

I would like to send a special thanks to those who came out here and braved the nasty odors,

yucky muck, and heavy lifting. Without you I likely would not be going into my home for

many more weeks. All of you are sincerely appreciated!

The 2nd Annual HESPERO BALLOON RACE and Corn Roast

Cliff and Sheri Skocdopole along with Gary and Paula Fehr would like to invite all of you to our 2nd annual balloon get together at Hespero, Alberta starting August 30th through to September 2nd. This is the Labor Day long weekend. The event was a success last year, and we are sure to have a good time again in 2013. Hespero is in a farm community clustered with oil and gas wells in west central Alberta. It is located 30 minutes west of Red Deer on #11 highway. Sylvan Lake and Rocky Mountain House are both 20 minutes away. Hespero is a booming community with a population of nearly 10 people. It has an historic community hall which will function as our main place to socialize. The parking lot is all grass and can function as a camping spot for tents and/or trailers. The hall has washroom facilities but no showers. The hall also has a kitchen with stoves and hot running water. The flying events will take place at or near the Hespero Airport. (For pilots, it is listed in the Canadian Flight Supplement under “Hespero”.) This is not a busy runway and we have the freedom to come and go as we please. This is located 2.5 kms from the Hespero Hall. Propane will be available for purchase at the Hespero airport. The schedule of events will consist of some fun flights, some competition flights, a timed long jump, a crew competition (what will it be this year?) and some fun socializing. We have five flights planned, weather permitting. A $20.00 pilot entry fee will be required for entering the long jump, winner takes all! There are also weekend events like Farmers Markets on Friday (Sylvan) and Saturday (Bentley) at nearby towns. Plus we will be having the long running “Rolling Hills Corn Roast” on the Saturday evening using the traditional corn roaster. There will be trophies, cash prizes, and a chance to win the propane you used during the weekend event. There will be a charge for all people attending to cover the costs of the hall, food, condiments, insurance, etc. For those of you that are not camping and will be staying at a motel, Sylvan Lake will be busy that weekend so if you decide to stay there you should book early. Rocky Mountain House has lots of motels and Spruce View is also close and it has a small motel. More updated information will follow by email late July or early August. If you have any questions call Cliff at 403-357-8266 or Gary at 403-302-7167. If you are interested in joining us for the weekend let us know by August 10th, so that we can start planning.

CLUB MEMBERS – REMEMBER! You can book flights in the Club balloon for yourself, family members, or close friends. � Anyone wishing to book the Club balloon must call the Flight

Coordinator for the month in question. � Pilots may have only one regular booking at a time and one

extraordinary booking, with the approval of the Executive. � NOTE: If a booking is needed when there is not an assigned

Coordinator, the booking should be made through the Executive. TO SCHEDULE A FLIGHT � Check with the Flight Coordinator

to find out what days are available. � Contact a Club Pilot to arrange for

the flight and the rate. � Call the Flight Coordinator and

• Stan W. spent a month recuperating at the Priddis BBLDLN* and Spa following surgery. He has now moved to Del and Wendy Michaud's place and continues to get stronger each day. His radiation therapy will be starting soon. (*Bed, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Laundry, and Nurse).

• Ali B. has been on the “injured reserve list” and away from ballooning for awhile. We hope to soon see her back out on the launch field.

• On July 31, 2013 at a former Nato base in Chambley, France, 408 balloons were launched breaking a world record, at the annual Lorraine Mondial International Hot Air Balloon Festival.
