God’s Work — Our Hands
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Grace to you and peace. Saint Paul, or one of his disciples, often begins his letters with this (or similar) greeting. And so I begin, “Grace and peace to you from our Sovereign Jesus the Christ.”
I humbly accept your call, through the New England Synod + ELCA, to serve as your interim pastor for approximately twelve to fourteen months. As I write this letter I am in the midst of packing and preparing to attend the New Eng-land Synod Bishop’s Convocation and move to Gales Ferry to begin our ministry together on 1 November 2012. Thank you again to all who have helped make this move possible in so many ways already. Pastor Mary Robinson found me a place to live, on Route 12, just across from the church. And the land lord promises it will be ready by the first! The council and staff have done more than I can mention here, thank you all.
I am looking forward to meeting you all, worshipping together, and helping you prepare for the future to which God is calling you. The interim process is designed to assist the congregation in calling the best possible pastor for the mission you understand God gives you. During my first two months with you I plan to visit and listen. I do not come with a cookie cutter plan to work out. Together we will work through the five developmental tasks of interim ministry in the way that St. Luke deems best for St. Luke. But for the first two months, which is the Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas holiday season, I will be visiting and listening in order to get to know members of the congregation and community as much as possible. I’ll be sharing more about the process, too.
A bit about myself: I grew up in Pittsford, New York, a suburb of Rochester. Lake Ontario to the north provides plenty of snow in the winter and the Fin-ger Lakes to south offers beautiful fall foliage and great wine country. I graduated from State University of New York at Buffalo with a B.S. degree in Medical Technology and worked in the field for several years, including three as an overseas Lutheran missionary to Phebe Hospital, Liberia, West Africa.

Dates! What is the first thing that
comes to your mind when you think of the word “dates?” Do you think of days of the
calendar? Fruit? A time of fun with someone special? When I did a quick search on-line, the first item that popped-up was the fruit, specifically Phoenix dactylifera. My first thought is of something being due or a special day on the calendar. What is the significance of the following calendar dates?*
January 1 February 11 March 15 April 7 May 18 June 6
July 4 August 20 September 26 October 23
October 31 November 11 December 25
Some of these dates may have special meaning to you; others may
leave you scratching your head. St. Luke has several important dates occurring in the coming month.
November 4, 2012—Pastor Elaine Quincey will celebrate her first Sunday as
St. Luke’s Intentional Interim. St. Luke will also be welcoming new members. November 11, 2012—Consecration Sunday for St. Luke. Please remember to
turn in your pledge cards. Thank a veteran for providing us the freedom to worship and live.
November 21, 2012—Community Thanksgiving service to be celebrated.
What are you thankful for this year? November 30, 2012—Advent Festival at St. Luke. Come enjoy an evening of Fellowship and Discipleship as we begin the watchful waiting of Christ’s
Birth. December 2, 2012—Annual Lessons and Carols service. Come hear the Gospel Lesson foretelling the Birth of Jesus Christ and hear the Senior
choir and Bell groups perform. These dates are just a small handful of events that occur at St. Luke each month. Check out the church Calendar to see what is happening at St. Luke! See you in church! Paul *p.s. Come see me, and I’ll let you know why I think the above dates are significant.

expressed in so many ways.

for soup and information. Mark your calendars.
If you are looking for a mission experience this summer, meet with Ms. Kay following worship on Sunday,

My mother, Winnie, and sister Jennifer have lived in San Marcos, California for almost thirty years. Upon my return from Africa, I lived in California for two years while I studied Greek and prepared to enter the Master of Divinity program at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in September 1986. I was ordained at my home congregation, Saint Paul, Pittsford, on Saint Luke Day (18 October) 1990. And as I say in my RLP (Rostered Leader Profile), “I can’t not preach the Gospel.” It’s poor grammar, but seems so much more forceful than, “I have to preach the Gospel;” so I let it stand. I am also a hospice chaplain, having completed two years of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) residency in Bethlehem, PA. I met Jenn in 1993 in Canajoharie, New York. Jenn is a social worker at KidsPeace, working with troubled and hurting adolescent boys. We enjoy walks on the beach. I love music – classical, Baroque, jazz, opera, and more. I have a good sense of humor, and have been advised by colleagues not to give up my day job – you can joke with me! I love chocolate (dark) and Mickey Mouse and going to Disneyland with my sister. I have en-joyed porch gardening, harvesting a few dozen tomatoes and jalapeño peppers this year. I like the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots. I am a simple parish pastor who cares deeply about the proclamation of the Gospel, meets God in the Luther-an liturgy, loves God’s people and believes it is an honor and a privilege to walk with people in the spiritual life. I come among you to give witness to the hope that is within me in Christ Jesus, as one who gives thanks to God for each day. Finally, I ask that you pray often (daily!) for our interim ministry process and for me as your interim pastor, that God will show us God’s will for St. Luke. Peace be with you. Your partner in the Gospel,
Pastor Elaine

My Favorite Lyrics
Come, ye thankful people, come. Raise the song of harvest home.
All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin. God our Maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied.
Come to God’s own temple, come! Raise the song of harvest home.
"But my God shall supply all your need ac-cording to His riches in glory by
Christ Jesus." -Philippians 4:19

Stewardship
I offered a short temple talk recently on the subject of financial stewardship. I have to admit, I was not completely comfortable standing in front of the assembly and discussing this issue. I’m glad that I did it though, because doing so further reinforced my beliefs about the subject. It was towards the end of my first year as your Treasurer that it became clear to me that Pat and I had to get serious about stewardship. While I found serving on the council most rewarding, it was frustrating at times to watch the offering figures fluctuate up and down throughout the year. It
was disappointing as a council member to have to ask the various Purpose Teams to under spend their respective budgets so that we could avoid a deficit at year end. Thankfully, the Congregation pulled through as it usually does. But suffice it to say that serving on the council changed my perspective on financial stewardship. It became a melding or blending of biblical principles with the realities of today. Pat and I began to increase our annual pledge gradually over the next 3 or 4 years. I can’t say that there was any methodology to this process. It was really more of an act of faith, that if we did this, there would still be enough. We stretched our “financial selves” significantly. We examined our “have to haves” vs. our “want to haves”. After going through this exercise, we found ourselves confident that we were doing what we could, that we were serving better and contributing in a significant way to the mission & ministry of St. Luke. I’m also happy to report that there is still enough. I’m sure that most of you remember the survey that was conducted last year by the Vision and Mission team, with the results published in November. Sessions called “Listening Posts” were held, among other surveys. One of the questions asked during these sessions was “If God has His way with St. Luke for the next 3 years, what do you see in our future?” I noticed that of the 11 survey themes reported by the Team, St. Luke’s financial strength ranked 9th in importance out of 11; the lower 20%. Friends, I believe that in addition to its so many “Spiritual Assets”, St. Luke will need a solid financial foundation in order for its membership to continue the mission of outstanding service in God’s name. Generous, consistent giving on the part of our members will be very important as we move forward. During the Temple Talk, I was most comfortable talking about the terrific work that is being done in God’s name here at St. Luke and how far reaching that work is. That part was easy. My family is so blessed to be part of this Congregation.
In closing, I would ask you to please ponder these points as you prayerfully consider your pledge for 2013. Thank you and I’ll see you on Sunday! John Robbins Stewardship Team

On Sunday, October 14h, at 1PM the skies cleared , the temperature was a perfect 65 degrees and CROP Walk 2012 be-
gan. Along with many other walkers from the local Christian community, eleven St Luke walkers raised nearly $1,200;
including a $500 Thrivent match. Thanks to Hugh Busey who helped secure the match. Gales Ferry Ledyard walks
have a long tradition for raising funds for CWS/Crop’s local and global hunger programs. Like in past years, 25% will
go to the Gemma Moran Food Center which feeds the hungry in Southeastern Connecticut. Special thanks to all our
sponsor and donors and to all our walkers, Sue Anderson, Lynn Tarozzi, Mitch and Mary Robinson, Andy and Angela
George, Carla and Paul Henschel, and Dawn Chapman and friends. And, to Deb Eld, my Co-recruiter, who works at
our registration table.
Once again our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped us to walk for hunger relief.
You are really special people.

THE FURNITURE BANK TAG SALE IS
ALMOST HERE! It’s scheduled for November 9 and 10, and we’re hoping that you’ll again
be providing us with lots of good STUFF to sell! We always have a
wonderful collection of high-quality merchandise, at least 80% of which is
donated by members of St. Luke. It keeps getting better, and this time
we’re hoping for at least one Ferrari! Red is nice, but we’ll take any color.
Information about the kind of stuff we want (and a few things we don’t
want) is given below.
Meanwhile, we need your help
Before the tag sale, we’re still looking for one or more people who would be willing to help us evaluate and sell a
number of potentially valuable paintings and other items that were donated to the furniture bank. We could sell such items at the tag
sale, but should be able to do better selling them elsewhere (ebay, for example). If you would be interested in contributing to the
work of the furniture bank in this way, please contact Mike or Karen Wuesthoff at 860 381-9224.
What we need…
Anything usually found at tag sales is welcome, but please note that it must be in good condition, and that we cannot accept items
that are difficult to sell or dispose of, such as hazardous materials, paint, kitchen cabinets (yeah, we’ve gotten those!), tires,
automobile batteries, or sets of encyclopedias more than 10 years old.
In case you didn’t know:
The Furniture Bank, which began in 1982 as an outreach of St. Luke, collects donated furniture and gives it free of charge to people
in financial need who are referred by social service agencies and churches. We have been running tag sales at St. Luke for 22 years
(since 1990). Roughly half of the proceeds are used to meet operating expenses (mainly rental on storage lockers). The other half is
used to buy beds, most of which are purchased new because of bedbug issues. Donations, including items for the tag sale, are tax-
deductible. For further information, please call the furniture bank at 860 381-9224.
