HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY

I hope all of our John Purchase dads, grandfathers, uncles and significant father figures had a lovely Father’s Day yesterday. While our P & C and staff were disappointed that we were unable to celebrate with you as

we usually would, we sincerely hope you had a great day.

Our Year 3 students proudly decorated mugs for the significant dads and father figures in their lives.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG! IT’S TIME FOR SUMMER UNIFORM!

Now that spring has sprung and we have been experiencing warmer weather, our students can now begin to transition to summer uniform. We provide a two week window, where students can either wear summer or winter uniform, to enable parents to have these ready for the students to wear. This also provides a little flexibility for the students so they are comfortable during a period which is often unpredictable in terms of the temperature.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, parents and carers are asked to order uniforms online using Flexischools. Uniforms can be picked up from the Uniform Shop (near the school carpark) on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings. The uniform shop offers a pick up service due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Remember that cash is not accepted due to the increased health risks associated with cash handling. Please adhere to social distancing rules when collecting uniforms, keeping 1.5 metres away from others waiting at the uniform shop and please do not venture inside the school beyond the uniform shop.

If you are not able to collect the purchased uniforms at this time, please consult with Sarah, our friendly uniform shop coordinator, to organise an alternative arrangement. Her email address is:

[email protected]

As the mornings can still be a little chilly, please check that jumpers are clearly labelled as we have many jumpers left lying around as the layers come off during break times. This will help to make sure items are

returned to their rightful owners.

COVID-19 INFORMATION

The Department regularly updates their website to reflect the current health advice and to ensure the community is informed of the expectations on school sites for students, staff and the community. The information can also be accessed using the link below.

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY FOR YEARS 4, 5 AND 6 I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey earlier this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 14 September and 23 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being emailed to parents of students in Years 4, 5 and 6. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by this Friday 11 September, 2020. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents. The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.

Pyjama Day Mufti Day Fancy that, coming to school in pyjamas. What a treat! The Year 6 Pyjama Mufti Day fundraiser was a great success. Lots of learning was still taking place, when I popped into 34LJ, 3CR, KH, KE and 2B classrooms last week, even though the attire worn by students and teachers was a little more ‘casual’ than usual.

Help kids tap into their inner resources ‘The resourcefulness a child develops when they experience adversity doesn’t desert them when life returns to normal. It waits in the background, ready to be drawn upon again when hardships, frustrations and difficulties come their way.’ In his article about developing resourcefulness in children, Michael Grose highlights these aspects:

Give them a chance to be resourceful Catch them being resourceful Encourage creativity Develop coping skills

Respect: Share the space with others

Congratulations to the students who have demonstrated our school expectations of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY or who have tried to ASPIRE.

Purchase Pride Badge (10 Purchase Prides)

When students receive ten Purchase Pride awards (pictured above), these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class. Please note that the tear off strip on the bottom of each Purchase Pride, should be placed in the stage ‘Lucky Dip’ boxes in the awards shelf. At this stage, Purchase Prides will continue to be presented in classrooms, as no assemblies are being held at 8:55am. Congratulations to the following recipients: Ekansh G (2N), James W (2N), Nicholas L (KB), Erin S (4L), Caleb (2N), Rhea D (1M)

What do I do with my Class Awards?

When a student has received ten green/white class awards (pictured above), they should be handed in to Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached: 10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion 50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day! A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose! Please note: Modified, special assemblies, are being held this term, in Weeks 3, 7 and 10. A Principal’s Morning Tea (students only) for Bronze Award winners, will also be held in Week 10. At this stage, unfortunately, parents will not be permitted to attend these events. We will keep you informed if this advice changes.

INSIGHTS

Help kids tap into their inner resources

My first parenting mentor, Maurice Balson, author of Becoming Better Parents constantly reminded parents, “If you want yourchild to be resourceful you need to put them in positions to develop their resources.”

Balson’s resourcefulness message is just as apt today. Coping with change, dealing with small losses, handling rejection andovercoming disappointment are the types of experiences that build a child’s or young person’s inner resources.

Developing resourcefulness is the appropriate approach to take when considering the disruptive impact that coronavirus ishaving on kids’ lives. A child who is struggling to come to grips with the changes brought about by the pandemic initially needsan emphatic, supportive approach. They also need encouragement to tap into their inner resources to help them manage thehard times. The following strategies will help develop your child or young person’s inner resources.

Give them a chance to be resourceful

Harry, age 10, oen leaves his lunch at home. His father, who works from home, won’t take forgotten items to school. Harryeither misses lunch or persuades his friends to share their lunches with him. Either way, when Harry leaves his lunch at home he’sforced to rely on his emotional or physical resourcefulness to get by. And he does.

Catch them being resourceful

A child’s behaviours that gain a parent’s attention generally expand. Highlight a child’s good manners, acts of kindness orhonesty and you’re more likely to get a repeat of those behaviours. Positive parental recognition is a high motivator for mostkids. To encourage your child’s resourcefulness, focus your attention and positive comments on acts of resourcefulness andresilience they exhibit.

Encourage creativity

Sylvia, age 13 walked to school each day, saving her bus fare to spend on clothes that were out of reach of her parents’ budget.Sylvia found a way to overcome her money problem in her own way. Children and young people usually come up with verycreative solutions when they’re allowed to own their problems.

Develop coping skills

Kids rely on their coping skills to help them manage their emotional states when life throws them curve balls. Build your child’sset of coping skills through direct teaching, modelling and discussion. Humour, distraction, relaxation, exercise, play andthought-distancing are some of the more common coping skills kids can use to help them tolerate their diicult feelings.

What can I do if I think my children are being bullied at school?

• Try to talk with your children about what is going on.

• Listen to their concerns and believe them.

• Be aware of your own response and react in a calm and helpful manner.

• Talk with your children’s teachers and calmly discuss the situation and some possible strategies.

• Encourage your children to ask for help at school if they are being bullied e.g. talk about who they could talk to at school, and how to ask for help.

What can I do to help my children if they are being cyber bullied?

To prevent and respond to cyber-bullying, a useful acronym to remember is I-CURRB.

• Investigate what your child is doing online.

• Communicate regularly with your children to understand what they enjoy doing online.

• Use family safety software to keep track of what your children are able to access online.

• Research policies on cyberbullying. Online applications, such as Snapchat and Instagram, will have their own policies.

• Report cyberbullying.

• Block communications from students who cyberbully others. Most instant messaging applications, chat rooms and email account providers allow you to block messages from identified people.
