This week’s yummy rec-ipe is SALMON-ASPARA-

GUS PIE. This is a great way to use fresh asparagus this spring. It’s also an easy recipe. From start to finish,

it’s ready in an hour, which is great for those busy spring nights.

INGREDIENTS:

1-pound fresh asparagus cut into 1-inch pieces about 2 cups

4 medium green onions, sliced around ¼ cup

1 ½ cup shredded swiss cheese around 6 ounces1 can (6 ounces) skinless, boneless pink salmon,

drained½ cup Bisquick1 cup milk1 ½ teaspoon chopped fresh or ½ teaspoon dried ba-

sil leaves1/8 teaspoon pepper2 large eggsTIME TO COOK:

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a 9-inch pie plate, preferably glass, with cooking spray. Spread the as-paragus, onions, ¾ cup of the cheese and the salmon in the pie plate.

Stir the remaining ingredients in a medium bowl with a wire whisk or fork until well blended. Pour over ingredients in the pie plate.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Sprinkle with remaining ¾ cup cheese. Bake about two minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Enjoy! Let me know if you changed up the recipe. You may reach me at [email protected]. Thanks! I can’t wait to hear from you! GOOD COOKING!

vided by Pet Partners. Pet Partners is an organization that provides an ani-

mal and their handler with education and training, to obtain a therapy certification. A therapy certification

provides animal-assisted interventions with volunteers that serve health and educational facilities, as well as camps, libraries, and community events. A “Read with Me” certification provides reading therapy and sup-port to those with learning disabilities in addition to helping them learn to read through the human-animal bond. Poole and Zelda are in the process of obtaining the “Read with Me” certification now. Their certifica-tion and partnership is vital to this area, as there are no other Pet Partner “Read with Me” therapy teams in the surrounding area.

The “Read with Me” certification program (through

petpartners.org) evaluates and certifies not only Zelda,

but Poole too, ensuring that she is trained as a handler with regard to the safety and welfare of both Zelda and the readers receiving her therapy. Poole will specifically

be trained to identify signs of stress and the success of bonding between Zelda and her therapy partner. Once Zelda and Poole have passed their courses and evalua-tions, they will be awarded a Pet Partners’ t“Read with Me” certification that will remain active for 2 years.

In fact, their certification will be admitted in all states

across the nation, expanding the service area for this dynamic therapy team.

Zelda is currently certified through the American

Kennel Club for Canine Good Citizen (CGC), the Ca-nine Good Citizen Advance (CDCA), and Companion Dog (CD). These current certifications will make an

easier and smoother certification process for Zelda to

become a Pet Partner, earning the “Read with Me” cer-tification. Poole will become an expert at recognizing

successful therapy partnerships or stressful situations when a child or Zelda is uncomfortable. In doing so, Poole will be trained to intervene and take over stress-ful situations if one should arise.

Providing reading therapy with Zelda has been a dream of Poole’s for a long time. She was excited to find a nearby certification program for an animal and

trainer/handler. Poole and Zelda will be evaluated and certified in St. Joseph.

Poole has approached Directors at both public li-braries and is hoping to begin partnerships with them and set up a reading therapy schedule to begin later this spring. Both Directors were excited about the pro-gram and cannot wait to begin a therapy schedule with Zelda and Poole.

One of Poole’s goals is to find a book or books that

explain what a service dog provides. She hopes that will break the ice for Zelda to begin therapy. Poole is

scheduled to be a guest speaker at Story Time at the Hamilton Library in the near future.

Another goal of Poole’s is to become ac-tive in the area schools, with Zelda providing reading therapy. She wants to help children of all ages overcome their issues with read-ing by providing read-ing therapy through Zelda.

If you have any ques-tions about a reading therapy program or the Pet Partners’ “Read with Me” certification,

you can contact Crys-tal Poole at [email protected] or 816-262-3506.

Statement by Missouri Farm Bureau President Blake Hurst

Regarding Rural Revitalization Package “Governor Greitens’s announcement of a rural revi-

talization package is great news for our state. Improving access to broadband, fulfilling obligations to biodiesel producers, improving ports and promoting water quality initiatives will indeed strengthen rural communities.

“With an annual economic contribution of more than $88 billion, agriculture and related industries is the en-gine that drives communities from Tarkio to Tuscumbia and Hannibal to Halfway. Providing access to affordable, high-speed broadband opens a world of possibility. Stu-dents will be able to do their schoolwork at home, not in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. Rural residents will have direct linkages to health care specialists, farmers will have real-time access to production data and busi-nesses will have vast new marketing opportunities.

“Missouri Farm Bureau supports this initiative and we look forward to working with the Governor and other or-ganizations dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our state’s rural communities.”

This is the biggest shooting event at Boot Hill. This year’s 11th Annual “Shoot Like a Girl” event is sched-uled for Aug. 11 and is directed by Neva Woody of Hamilton.

This year, a new fundraising shoot is being held at Boot Hill on April 14. This will be a shoot for the Mis-souri Conservation Department. There will be indi-

vidual events as well as a team event.Boot Hill is also the host club for the Northwest

Missouri Sporting Clays League that runs from April through September.

This league is designed for beginners and expe-rienced shooters alike. League members shoot one round of sporting clays each month. All shooters are divided into classes with shooters of like ability and shoot against each other to determine placements.

In 2016 there was over $11,000 in cash divided among eight classes with nine guns given away. In 2018 there will be 18 guns given away and likely over $15,000 in cash awarded to the class placements.

There are many sponsors of this league, with the main sponsors being CZ-USA in Kansas City, KS. They are providing two grand prize guns valued at $1,799, each to be given away by drawing of the shooters that participated for the entire league. Additionally, two guns per month will be given away by a drawing of all the shooters that participated that month. In 2016 they had 101 shooters. League organizers are hoping for 125 shooters in 2018.

Achievers 4-H Club completes an Adopt A Highway service project

The Hamilton Achievers 4-H Club met on Saturday morning, March 10, at Walker’s Collision. After groups were chosen, orange security vests and trash bags were passed out and the group went to collect trash. Our area is along Highway 13 south of Hamilton. There were 18 members present as well as seven volunteers from MU, and several parents. It was a nice day to get out and make our piece of the world a little brighter. We collected 40 bags of trash. Walkers Collision al-lowed us to use their building for grilling pork burgers for our pot luck lunch, which was appreciated. We had a wonderful show of Achievers families and a lot of good food.

Hamilton Achievers quilting class

We are now in our third month of quilting. Despite some of our members having the flu, our quilts are be-ginning to look like something besides stacks of blocks and strips. We began sewing our quilt strips together on Sunday, Feb. 18. Ava Grant and Mikayla Robertson gave a demonstration on Feb. 25, at the Achievers Feb. meeting. Mikayla’s quilt top is now ready to be quilt-ed.

Richard is continuing to have us bake our own re-freshments. I have heard no complaints in baking them or eating them. It is a learning experience that we en-joy.

The Gallatin Theater League cordially invites you to meet The Church Basement Ladies of the East Cornucopia Lutheran Church of the Prairie in Minnesota. You will im-mediately identify with the widow, Mrs. Lars (Viv-ian) Snustad, who is the matriarch of the church kitchen, Mrs. Gilmer (Ma-vis) Gilmerson, the farm-er’s wife who knows the genealogy of everyone in town, and the warm and charming Mrs. Elroy (Karin) Engleson, the best cook in the kitchen.

As they work their magic in the church base-ment kitchen, providing food for the congrega-tion’s many activities, and dealing with the church’s cantankerous freezer and furnace, they are joined by Pastor E. L. Gunder-son who recently married a new young wife and Karin’s daughter Singe who is going to school at the “U” and brings home
