Tucked away at the foot of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains is a small southern county; a community of craftsmen with a rich heritage, a gathering place of furniture makers, artists, nature lovers, and now hi-tech giants such as Google. This is Caldwell County and Lenoir, NC - a place to stop, catch your breath, and enjoy all that nature and the people it has inspired for generations have to offer.

Lenoir, NC , which was first named Tucker’s barn after the first people settled in the area, is the county seat and is perhaps best known for its furniture heritage; the birthplace of some of the most skilled and gifted craftsmen in the industry. Home to some of the country’s most famous furniture brands, Caldwell County is central to the area’s “20 miles of furniture” shopping outlets and stores. Thousands shop here annually looking for bargains on home furnishings.

More than furniture lovers, though, are drawn to this community of craftsmen. During the last century, the furniture industry refined craftsmen that formed the basis for a community of artists and art lovers. Artists from all over converge in Lenoir, NC each year for the Annual Indoor/Outdoor Sculpture Celebration, one of the Southeast’s largest sculpture competitions. With nearly 80 installations, Caldwell County has the largest collection of permanent public outdoor sculpture of any county of its population in the US.

However, Mother Nature sculpted the area’s most endearing attraction. The climate among the rolling hills and striking vistas is mild. Visitors will experience the largest elevation change in North Carolina from

900 feet above sea level to 5,964 feet, a whopping 575% change.

With an estimated population of 83,029, the county was formed in 1841 from parts of Burke County and Wilkes County. It was named for Joseph Caldwell, presiding

professor and the first president of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Caldwell County has 8 incorporated towns and cities within its 474 square mile borders including Lenoir, Sawmills, Granite Falls, Gamewell, Hudson, Cajah’s Mountain, Rhodhiss and Cedar Rock.

Our School

The Caldwell County School System is a nationally accredited public school district enrolling 12,351 students in grades K-12, the 33rd largest district of 116 in North Carolina. The district includes six high schools, 11 elementary schools for students in grades K-5, four middle schools serving grades 6-8, and four K-8 schools positioned in the scenic, rural areas of Caldwell County. The district also has the Patterson Science Center, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) center for grades K-12 located on the campus of the former Patterson School that features an outdoor classroom environment of 1,400 acres.

South Caldwell High School is located on a 100-acre campus in southern Caldwell County & serves approximately 1,634 students in grades 9-12. Students come from a rural community of families who work mainly in the manufacturing & service industries. South Caldwell High School first opened its doors in the fall of 1977, but several additions to accommodate the growing student body have since transformed the building.

South Caldwell competes athletically in the 4A classification, which is the highest classification in North Carolina. Currently South Caldwell is in the NorthWestern 3A/4A conference. South has produced several now famous alumni who have reached national and international fame including Dr. Richard (Rick) Hendrix who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from President George Bush, Grammy Award winning country music artist Eric Church, and 3 time World Series Champion and 2014 World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner. South Caldwell’s Alumni continue to carry the core values and learning experiences instilled upon them while here, making the world a little more positive for everyone.

PROGRAM NOTESRephrygeration Todd Stalter (b. 1966)

Rephrygeration was commissioned by the South Caldwell Band Boosters, written for the honor of performing at the 2015 North Carolina Music Educators Association Annual Conference. The piece is built from the Phrygian mode, with specific interest given to the interval of the minor 2nd, and the unexpected dark shade it creates when used in a melodic line. In this mode, a minor 2nd occurs between the 1st and 2nd scale degree, and between the 5th and 6th notes; therefore, melodies feature this interval quite frequently.

Toccata Marziale Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

Although primarily a composer, Vaughan Williams was active as an organist, conductor, lecturer, teacher, editor, and writer. His interest in the preservation of English folk songs led him to journey through the country in search of songs and carols to record and transcribe. This fascination with the music of his country influenced not only his musical output but the course of British twentieth-century music as well.

Toccata Marziale was written and premiered by the Royal Military School of Music Band in 1924 as part of the British Empire Exposition at Wembley Stadium in London. The word ‘toccata’ is taken from the Italian word ‘toccare’ meaning “to touch,” as it was performed on keyboard instruments. The toccata evolved throughout the baroque and classical periods, becoming more virtuosic technically and serving as a showpiece for keyboard performers and a display of contrapuntal mastery for composers.

Heaven’s Light Steven Reineke (b. 1970)

In the early morning hours of Friday, October 4, 2002, a house fire took the lives of Holly Spivey, her mother, and her father. It was Homecoming at Evans High School and the student body, especially the band students, were in a state of shock. One of Holly’s closest friends wrote this about her:

“Holly was this bright shining star who lit up everyone’s life by being in it. She always made people comfortable, especially freshmen just starting out. She talked to everyone and was never ‘cliquey.’ She’d always have her beautiful black hair pulled back in a ponytail, and wouldn’t look quite right without her hoodie and boots. She had many interests, but nothing quite impacted her life like the band. She gave 150 percent and was always dependable for so much more. Her big infatuation was with the stars. Now she is a star watching over us.”

Some people come into our lives and go quickly - Some people move our souls to dance They awaken us to new understanding - With the passing whisper of their wisdom

Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon - Leave footprints on our hearts,

And we are never, ever the same….

May your life interpret your dreams

Holly Faith Spivey (May 17, 1986 – October 4, 2002)

Lanigan’s Ball Ed Kiefer (b. 1954)

Created for the composer’s friend Marc Schaub, and the Mount Tabor Wind Ensemble, Lanigan’s Ball is based upon two old Irish tunes, Lanigan’s Ball and Binnorie. The first is a raucous song and tells of a party gone awry, ending in a jolly fistfight. Binnorie, a slower ballad, is the story of fatal jealousy between sisters over the affection of a man.

The opening party and fisticuffs give way to the sad Binnorie, building until the entire band is playing the melody in layers. The final section then begins with a percussion groove. The original melody returns, and then the second melody layers over the first for an exciting finish. The selection is scheduled to be published in 2016 by Carl Fischer Publishing.

O Magnum Mysterium Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943)

tran H. Robert Reynolds(b. 1934)

About his setting, Morten Lauridsen writes, “For centuries, composers have been inspired by the beautiful O Magnum Mysterium text with its depiction of the birth of the new-born King amongst the lowly animals and shepherds. This affirmation of God’s grace to the meek and the adoration of the Blessed Virgin are celebrated in my setting through a quiet song of profound inner joy.” H. Robert Reynolds has arranged the symphonic wind version of this popular work with the approval and appreciation of the composer.

O Magnum Mysterium

Tritsch-Tratsch Polka Johann Strauss (1825-1899)

arr Alfred Reed (1921-2005)

Although several composers during this time wrote in various musical forms and styles, it is their dance music more than anything else that has made Strauss a household name, and almost synonmous for music itself. Of these, none were more illustrious, successful, beloved and adored by the public than Johann Strauss, Jr., the Waltz King as he came to be known. It was in other forms as polkas, schnell-polkas (what we might call “quickstep polkas” today) quadrilles, promenades, etc., that his melodic genius and instinctive sense of the style and grace common to his own time created such delightful gems as the Tritsch Tratsch Polka and many similar smaller works.

“Tritsch-Tratsch” means chit-chat, or gossip in the Viennese popular dialect, and the effect of this little musical two-part form with trio is that of a busy, nattering little group of people exchanging the latest bit of news and gossip in a never ending rush of words and exclamations that simply pours out in one gush of excitement from beginning to end.

His Honor Henry Fillmore (1881-1956)

ed Frederick Fennell (1914-2004)

Henry Fillmore was the most colorful bandsman of his time. During an era that stretched across fifty vibrant years, he probably wrote more band music, much of it under assumed names , than any composer/bandmaster in history. Fillmore dedicated His Honor to Mayor Russell Wilson of Cincinnati, and according to Paul Bierley, it was probably played for the first time by the Fillmore Band during their concerts at the Cincinnati Zoological Gardens in August 1933.

Joyride Michael Markowski (b. 1986)

Joyride was commissioned by Jon Gomez and Dobson High School in Mesa, Az. to commemorate the school’s 25th Silver Anniversary. The piece made its formal premiere at Carnegie Hall in New York in June 2005 and was performed by the Dobson High School Wind Symphony under the direction of Jon Gomez.

A two and a half minute concert opener/closer, Joyride borrows Beethoven’s Ode to Joy melody and dresses it in a tie-dye blazer of rhythm and texture that nods humbly to John Adams’s Short Ride In A Fast Machine.

O magnum mysterium,et admirabile sacramentum

ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentum in praesepio!

Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare

Dominum Christum. Alleluia!

O great mystery, and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new- born Lord, lying in their manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

His ensembles consistently receive superior ratings and reviews at adjudicated events, and other performances. His bands have performed nationally and internationally, and have featured numerous guest artists at concerts, clinics, and festivals. His greatest source of pride has been the number of his high school students that have continued in the field of music education and become successful musicians, conductors, and educators in their own right.

Childers holds professional memberships in the National Association for Music Education, the North Carolina Music Educators Association, the North Carolina

Bandmasters Association, and the American School Band Directors Association. He served the Northwest District Bandmasters Association as Middle School Music Performance Adjudicator Chair and as High School Representative. During her tenure at Granite Falls Middle School, Stafford has more than doubled the band enrollment, and was named “Rookie Teacher of the Year” by her peers. Her band has placed more students in the Caldwell County All County Band, the Northwest District All District Band, and the North Carolina All State Band than has previously been done in the school’s history. Under her direction, the Granite Falls Middle School Band has received numerous Superior ratings at Music Performance Adjudication Events and she has also had the privilege of being a clinician for both Catawba and Stokes County All-County Honor Bands.

Sarah was nominated and selected by her colleagues to receive the “ENCORE” Award, given by the American School Bandmaster’s Association, for outstanding young band directors in North Carolina. She currently serves as Middle School Representative for the Northwest North Carolina Bandmaster’s Association. She has also received numerous grants and scholarships to add a wider variety of high-quality equipment to her band room and has headed many fundraisers to help needy families and children in her area.

The South Caldwell High School Band began in 1977, under the direction of Bob Love. Mr. Love developed a strong concert band foundation, and built a legacy of musical excellence recognized across the state; evident in his recent induction into the North Carolina Bandmasters ‘Hall of Fame.’ Arden Carson continued the tradition from 1984-2002, creating a generation of student musicians that excelled in the concert arena, and individually through solo performance, sending many of his graduates to study music collegiately.

Jason Childers became director of bands in the fall of 2002, and began expanding the size and scope of the band. Keeping the concert arena as its focus, competitive marching band, jazz, chamber ensembles, indoor percussion, winter guard, and AP music theory have all become an integral part of the program. With the leadership of middle school directors Leah Massey and Sarah Stafford, the high school band membership has grown to over 180 students. The band currently offers three concert ensembles and three separate jazz bands, with each student participating in a chamber ensemble throughout the year.

The Spartan Regiment performed by invitation at the 2013 North Carolina Governor’s Inaugural Parade in Raleigh, North Carolina. The concert, jazz, and marching bands have performed across North Carolina and beyond, including recent performances in New York City, Orlando, and the Bahamas. The band has recently received special invitations to perform in Chicago and Washington D.C.

The South Caldwell Wind Ensemble is honored to perform for the 2015 North Carolina Music Educators Association In-Service Conference.
