European Commission (EC) in cooperation with European Space Agency (ESA) and GSA Agency are governing and developing 2 systems in the field of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems):
• Galileo• EGNOS
– Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS)– Basic (Open Service) in operation since 01OCT2009– Safety of Life (SoL) Service – the most important for aviation, certified
02MAR2011 (ICAO, EUROCONTROL)
Main benefits of usingEGNOS in aviation

• Safety– reduction of the risks – reduction in the workload of pilots and air traffic control dispatchers
• Ecology– Optimizing flight routes– Reduction of noise– Limited impact on the landscape
• Economy, quality of the service– Less number of traffic irregularities– Cost savings
EGNOS has enabledGNSS-based instrument

...but Eastern Europe so far:
How to increase EGNOS utilization in Eastern Europe?

• Typical case of „Chicken/Egg problem“• But, how to break this „magic circle“?
...one of possible ways:– To define, design and certify standards for training of pilots
for safe, reliable and effective use of the GNSS technology– Trained pilots and well-prepared air operators
will naturally create pressure for airports/heliports to „wake up“and build environment for utilization of this know-how
