I hope that all of our brother Knights aresafe and have recovered after HurricaneMathew. I think that we as a whole werevery lucky that we did not get moredamage than we did.Our first fundraising party, the AutumnLeaves dance had to be canceled; we hadonly 34 RSVP’s. This will unfortunatelyimpact our ability to do our charitablework, we had budgeted $1,000.00 for theparty. I would like to ask all of you toplease consider helping by participating inour fundraising efforts whether it is one ofour dinner dances or our golf tournament.Your brother knights that are chairingthese events put many hours into theseevents. All you have to do is participateand enjoy yourself.Your trustees are working on the requiredpaperwork for removal of the knights thathave not paid their dues and have notresponded to the 3 letters that was sent tothem. There are many steps to go thrubefore our request can be sent to State andSupreme and then they will take time tocheck it. But we are moving along andhopefully we will be able to reach our goalbefore the end of this fraternal year.As many of have noticed, the Compass hasbeen arriving late to you the last 2 months.I apologize for that. This was due toequipment failure that forced us to have

an outside vendor print the Compass. Andthen the distribution team, (they fold, addstickers to close, sticker with name and sortthem according to zip code), had to berescheduled. I would like to thank KenPankowski and his distribution team for

hanging in there. As a result of this I haveinstructed Ken to set an earlier deadline for anysubmission of material for the Compass. This hasbeen done in an effort to ensure that you will getthe newsletter in a timely manner. The only othervariable is the post office handling of bulk mailand we have no control of that. I would like toencourage you to take advantage of the digitalversion of the Compass, by signing up to receiveit by email. You will have it in color, you can zoomin and there are links that you can click on to getto a web page with a subject of interest. You willreceive it on the day that it is printed.

*Editor’s Note* - Please see the related info onCompass via email on page 7.Please try to attend our yearly Memorial Massfor our deceased Brother Knights on TuesdayNovember 22ⁿ. The Mass in church starts at 7:00PM followed by a social in PAC. We are honoringour deceased Brother Knights that helped buildour council. It is a family event just like our Rosary.I would like to send all of mybrother Knights my wish for awonderful Thanksgiving. I hopethat you will be able to spend itwith your loved ones.

Our Knight of the month has been a Knight for just over 1 year, but he has alreadymade great contributions to our council. He was part of the committee for ourlast golf tournament; he was the chairman for the successful church picnic, he isour Youth Director, he is the chairman for our new committee to find new waysto increase our fundraising revenue and our Chancellor. That is an impressiveresume for just one year as a Knight. It is my pleasure to present our Knight ofthe month to our Worthy Chancellor Mike Weiler.

Day of Week Hours Needed for Adorers

GOOD OF THE ORDER! Please pray for:

The Members and Friends of our Council wish the following Brothers a Very Happy Birthday Duringthe Month of November. Don’t forget to wish them a Happy Birthday when you see them!

Adorers Needed - by Walt Edmonson

Thanks to Jim Adee

“Jesus, you said, ‘There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ Today we pray for those menand women who have, in their military service, sacrificed their time, strength, ambition, health and even their lives onthis earth to benefit ‘friends,’ known and unknown. Many of our warriors carry scars in their hearts as well as on their bodies. Dark memories haunt their dreams at night.Fears cloud their waking hours. Jesus, you came to give us abundant life by providing a way for us to release our painto you. On the cross you bore our sorrows and brokenness and when we trust you, we can exchange our wounds foryour joy in a future unhindered by fate. Bring this gift now to the veterans of our nation who bear tangible and intangiblewounds. Heal them, Jesus.Bless the families of soldiers who bear these pains vicariously. Give them patience and wisdom and strength to endure, and more than endure to hope in faith for a blessed life. God, not everything that happens in life is good. But youpromise to work all things together for good to those who love you and align their lives with your purpose. Create goodin the families of veterans who have experienced pain and loss. Do this miracle, we pray.We honor our veterans in your name. We thank you – as we thank them – for their sacrifice. Weask you to return to them the favor of your blessing, a gift we on our own could never offer. Weask that you would give our veterans a peace beyond the peace they fought to secure, a peacein their own hearts, wrapped in the joy of a life touched by your strong hand.In Jesus we pray…

6. Message from Financial Secretary; Extra way to collect for HOPE donations

As those of you newsletter readers have found out, our collections forColumbus HOPE Foundation (Tootsie Roll Drive) are falling considerablybehind last year’s total. This was due partly because corporations havereduced the number of groups they will allow to collect donations in frontof their stores, and because a few store managers changed their mindsabout collections.

There is another way to collect donations, with less work, no standingout in the weather (hot, cold, rain, etc.) or having to stand if you are notable. Many local businesses, especially privately owned, Mom & Poptype stores will accept a donation box like the one on the right here.

This one comes with 2 keys (one for the placing Knight, and one for thecouncil). Then, just go by once a week and empty the box and bring thedonation (or count & write a check) and give to Bob Leewe, Jim Adee orany 8980 council officer. Use the form(s) below. Place as many as youcan. When you have a cooperating business, please call Ken Pankowskiat: 843-492-6062 or email at: [email protected] and abox will be given to you ASAP. Thank you for your help. Remember, it’sfor the Kids.

A Message from Your Financial Secretary:

Brothers,

In the next two months you will receive two mailings from me, your Financial Secretary. The first is your chanceto participate in the State’s Charity Drawing which will be held following the Mid-Winter meeting of the GrandKnights on February 4th. This will come in a standard first class envelope. In the past, the State Charity ticketswere one dollar each, with a book of eleven costing ten dollars. This year, the tickets are five dollars each andare individually issued. Due to our council size, we were given 1,500 tickets which means that I will be sendingeach of you five tickets.

The second mailing will be our annual dues which will be mailed after the 15th of December. For regular members,we have the lowest annual dues in the state at $25. For Honorary members, the dues are $10. Our Seniormembers, over 65 with 30 years or over 70 with 25 years, there are no dues as there are also no assessmentsfor them. Part of this mailing, will also be the form for submitting your annual fraternal hours. Please note, youcan now do this through our website. All you need is your membership number found on your membership cardand your date of birth. Please respond promptly to both of these mailing and aid to keeping peace in my household.

Brother Sir Knights;

ASSEMBLY 2107 OFFICERS 2016ASSEMBLY 2107 OFFICERS 2016

You who are members of Council 8980 have received, via email, a copy of the “Culture of Life”Resolution which was approved at the Knights of Columbus Convention held in August. We, as anAssembly sent our own resolution to Supreme and were notified that it is accepted and consideredto be part of the overall resolution which was presented and approved at the Convention. There werethirty three jurisdictions who submitted resolutions. Those were all broken down and the resolutionyou received was the end result. For those of you who do not have email, I will have copies available

at the meeting. If you want one sooner, just call and I will mail it to you. A special thanks for SK Mike Butryn forhis work on this project. Also, thanks to Fr. Ed for his support in our effort.I have been notified that there is a change in the date, time and location of the next 4th Degree Exemplification. It will now be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 in Columbia, SC. More information will be forthcoming tothose 3rd Degree members who want to advance. The tentative plans call for two more exemplifications, onein May or June in the Spartanburg area and another in September/October here along the coast. We will haveanother information meeting in November. See article in main part of the compass for information. We are coming into November and December and the holiday season. Let’s look ahead. Our regularly scheduleddates for meeting fall on Thanksgiving for November and Christmas week for December. So with that in mind, Ifeel that going from the October meeting to the January meeting would be too long a period in case we havesome important information to distribute and discuss, so we will have a meeting on Tuesday, December 6, 2016which will cover both the November and December meetings. Also, we are going to startusing the Calling Post phone system to contact the Assembly members for whom we do nothave email addresses. This will enable us to contact all members with important informationas it arises. Keeping with this, in December when you receive the dues statement for 2017,please write out your email address on the statement so our records can be current. Nowthat all the housekeeping is out of the way, I hope at you all survived Hurricane Matthewwithout any major problems. I know several of you were out of power for several days anda couple of you had damage from trees falling on your houses. I hope you are all well andable to move on. Sandy and I hope you all have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. There is much weshould be thankful for at this time of year. If you are traveling for the holiday be safe. PEACE…

Fraternally yours,Ken HeinFaithfulNavigator

Columbus Hope Foundation November 2016 Update

The 2016 Columbus Hope Foundation drive has collected to date over $18,800.00. The 2016 Campaign has been a hugesuccess considering all of the setbacks we have experienced during campaign. The setbacks we have had to overcomeinclude loss of one of our dates at the Garden City Wal-mart, postponement of the October Murrells Inlet Walmart MarketPlace and the October Church collection due to Hurricane Matthew. We are working to secure a replacement date for boththe Wal-mart Market Place and the Church collection.

We have been blessed to have a number of responses to our Knight of Hope campaign. We truly appreciate the aid to our

Knight of Hope campaign from Brother Knights that have made monetary contributions. You too, can become a Knight of Hope for our intellectually challenged children. Become a Bronze Knight of Hopethrough a donation up to $20.00, a Silver Knight of Hope through a donation up to $21-$40.00, or a Golden Knightof Hope through a donation of $41.00 or more.

Our October 2016 Golden Knight of Hope is Brother Mark Jersek

Our October 2016 Silver Knight of Hope is Brother Charley Morgante

The First Principle of our Order is CHARITY

Additionally, perhaps you have an association with a professional agency or business and they are willing to participate.

We would truly appreciate their sponsorship either through a monetary donation or gift certificate. Any gift certificates

received will be auctioned during a TBD Council 8980 event with the proceeds going into the Columbus Hope Foundation

Fund. Perhaps you patronize a particular restaurant, store etc. the owner is willing to place a Tootsie Roll display canisterat the check-out point.

Please consider completing the form below and sending your contribution to the Worthy Financial Secretary.
