● Justinian became emperor in 527 CE
● Goal: to regain Rome’s fading glory

● Despite Justinian advancements, the emperor chose to

○ Literature
○ Math
○ History
○ Medicine

● Constantinople was meeting place for merchants

● Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks (1453 CE)
