SUNDAY OF THE MAN BORN BLIND

On his way to the temple of Jerusalem, Jesus met a man born blind and miraculously restored his sight. The Gospel of this Sunday gives a detailed account of the whole incident. The liturgy properly evaluates the various details of this great miracle. First, here is the story:

"Passing through the Temple, Jesus saw a man who and been blind since birth. He had compassion on him and put clay on his eyes, then said to him: Go to the pool of Siloe, and wash! And as he washed, his sight was restored, and he proclaimed the glory of God. But his relatives said to him: "who opened thine eyes that no living creature can heal?" And he answered them saying, "A man named Jesus. He told me to go and wash in the pool of Silo, and now I can

see. He is truly Christ, the Messiah, of whom Moses wrote in the Law. He is the Savior of our souls."

The Jews believed that this man's blindness was God's punishment for some sin. They forgot that man's troubles are not always punishments. To see sin behind every trouble is superficial, even bad theology. Sufferings are sometimes sent to us in order that "the works of God should be made manifest." The liturgy understands this, but it also speaks of the spiritual blindness which is an even greater tragedy, so we ask God in the words of the liturgy to be saved from this deeper blindness: "With eyes spiritually blind I come to You, O Christ, and like the man who was blind since birth I cry out to You with repentance." " To those who are in the darkness, You are the shining light. And again: "Enlighten, 0 Lord, my spiritual eyes made blind by the gloom of sin. Anoint them, 0 compassionate One, with humility. Wash them with the tears of repentance."

ASCENSION OF OUR LORD The Scriptural descriptions which serve as basis for the icon illustration of the Feast of The

Ascension of or Lord are rather sparse. The Gospel of Mark states that: "The Lord, Jesus was taken up into heaven and took His seat at God's right hand." In the Gospel of Luke we learn that the Ascension took place in Bethany, that Christ has His hand upraised and blessing the Disciples. He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight.

The Byzantine liturgical hymn sums up the Feast: "You descended from heaven to earth, 0 Christ, and by Your

Ascension You wondrously raised up the race of Adam which had been lying in the depths of the prison of Hades. And having taken our nature back to heaven, You seated it with You on the Father's throne because of Your mercy and love for all."
