Letter from the President 2019 – No. 7
Welcome to the August 2019 BUZZ, especially to new members who have recently joined U3A. On behalf of U3A Bendigo, I was delighted to attend a City of Greater Bendigo hosted Network Forum for not-for-profit groups on 11 June. The forum provided an opportunity to meet members of other community groups from across the region and reflect on various aspects of group wellbeing. To observe the 2019 World-Wide Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15 June, Bendigo Health hosted an event on 12 June at the Bendigo Hospital where U3A was invited to display promotional material. Community awareness of elder abuse is growing and this is vital to help protect older Australians from physical, emotional, financial and social abuse, often inflicted by those closest to us. A PhD student, Renée St. Louis at the Monash University Accident Research Centre, has invited members of U3A Bendigo to participate in research on older driver behaviour. The research project is studying ways in which health and wellbeing impact older adults’ driving patterns over time. Interested members, primarily those 65 years and older, are invited to undertake a 15 to 20 minute online survey at: www.tinyurl.com/HealthandDriving
Around 35 convenors came to the Course Convenors meeting on 26 June. Convenors were reminded to be particularly attentive to new members and to ensure they let the Course Co-ordinator know about changes to their activities. A Zoom teleconference was convened during the meeting with Kevin Whelan from U3A Network Victoria giving an introduction to the UMAS membership system and demonstrating some of the key functions available for convenors. On behalf of the U3A Bendigo Committee of Management, I express my sincere thanks to Mary Goodall Tuohey who has resigned for personal reasons from the role of Course Co-ordinator and from the Committee. Mary’s contribution to both over the last few months has been greatly appreciated. The June Social Gathering saw about 50 members hear from guest speaker Louis Roller who shared his inspirational life story. Louis took us on a journey from his birth in Poland through the difficult and challenging experience of surviving in war-torn Paris, to he and his family’s eventual migration to Australia. Louis also shared some of his achievements throughout his professional career in pharmacy practice and education. My thanks to Louis for travelling up from Melbourne and to the Garden Visiting Group for providing afternoon tea. U3A Network Victoria is hosting a Loddon Mallee Regional Workshop in Bendigo on 9 and 10 September at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club. Participants will learn about ways to improve physical activity and governance of community groups, while having an opportunity to meet U3A members from across our local region and the Western Metropolitan Region. U3A Bendigo members are invited to attend by completing a Workshop Attendance form (see elsewhere in this BUZZ) and returning it to the office by 16 August. All U3A members are encouraged to attend.
U3A Bendigo will hold its annual Open Day on Tuesday, 8 October to coincide with Seniors Week. This is a great opportunity for members, friends and those interested in learning about U3A to come along and talk to convenors about classes and activities they might like to try next year. There will also be a range of entertainment and social activities to enjoy.
The Kangaroo Flat Community Plan Renewal Working Group is undertaking a community survey where respondents are being asked about their views on Kangaroo Flat. The survey can be completed online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/kflatcommuniytyplan before 31 July. Hard copies are available at the office. I encourage all U3A members to consider completing the survey. This is an opportunity to have your say about what is great and not so great about Kangaroo Flat. Ian Burdett President

ours list recognised James contribution to this field resulting in James being honoured
with the Medal of The Order of Australia. James is also a recipient of the prestigious Award
of Merit from the Royal Historical Society. James has received these awards for his signifi-
cant contribution to documenting and preserving the history of Bendigo.

2020 ANNIVERSARY
U3A Bendigo formally started in 1990.
In 2015 we celebrated our 25th anniversary and published a booklet documenting the history
of those years
2019 is our thirtieth year. I floated the suggestion of a booklet of what we did in our 30th year.
Each activity would have a page to tell everyone what they do, think, look like, or whatever the
group wants to put on that page.

Cataloging the Library Collection
The review of the library books has been completed and cataloging of the collection has
commenced.
We plan to catalog the sections:
Great Courses
Biographies
Other Non-Fiction
but not Fiction.
The method used to catalog is as follows:
An app Delicious Library 3 was sourced from Apple by Michael Gallagher and installed on
Barbara McDougall’s phone. This app is synced to a computer and the phone camera used to
scan the barcode of the book (usually located on the back of the book). Detailed information
of the book appears on the computer. From this Michael exports appropriate items of
information to a computer spread sheet, suitably formats it and transfers it to the U3A
website.
How to access the Catalogs on the Website:
Open the U3A website
Click on “Library Home Page”
Click on “Library Catalog”
This brings up:
U3A Library Catalog
Great Courses/ Biographies/ Other Non-Fiction
Great Courses Catalogue is already on the website and the list of courses can be sorted
alphabetically by Course Titles or by Lecturers, by clicking on the appropriate instruction.
The catalogs will be kept current by adding or deleting items as necessary.

CRYPTIC CROSSWORDS
THE BASICS OF CRYPTIC CROSSWORD PUZZLES 1.
Solving cryptic crosswords is great exercise for the brain because it brings
together lots of skills that we all have but rarely use together. We need to draw
on our memory, our general knowledge, our understanding of the structure of
words, our imaginations and on our ability to organise our thoughts.
Most cryptic clues consist of two elements, and it takes practice to be able to recognise which
is which. The straightforward hint, known as the definition, is the answer to the clue, and is
commonly found at either the beginning or the end. The cryptic hints, the indicators, are
designed to get you working on the words in the middle which will provide bits of the
answer.
There are lots of cryptic crossword conventions, but seven of the most common are the
synonym, the anagram, the ‘parts stitched together’, words spelled backwards, words made
from their letters, and the hidden word.
Q: Can you solve these cryptic clues?
Crooked inclination (4 letters) __ __ __ __
Wyatt sharpens up listening devices (9 letters) __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS
In early June it was great to see a large number of our garden members
withstood the cold and headed down to the ASQ Sydancer- Garden, Gift and Café
nursery at Harcourt. It was a lovely way to spend a winter’s morning wandering
among the extensive range of plants, which included cacti & succulents, climbers,
conifers, ground covers, indoor plants, natives, palms, roses, shade plants water
plants and fruiting trees.
On arrival, members quickly found their way to the lovely range of giftware and
homeware items, which accompanied a range of accessories, garden décor and
wall art that was sure to suit any garden.
Morning tea followed in the cafe where an extensive menu was available with a
range of hot & cold beverages, it was agreed that the coffee was something
special. The café at ASQ Skydance caters for a delicious breakfast, a hearty
lunch and a Grab & Go range of food if you have limited time available.
For our last meeting for the first half of this year, we visited a
beautiful property in Mandurang. Although the gardener, John
Barr, at this property had planted many native trees and shrubs
there was still a large amount of the original natural flora on the
property. John Barr was a terrific host and there was a lot of
conversation about certain plant types and their characteristics.
I’m sure that those individuals that host our visits to the various
gardens also pick up valuable information from many of our
garden group members. This property had two well filled dams
that kept the gardens watered through summer. Morning tea
followed under the beautifully decorated rotunda. A great
morning, sincere thanks to John and family.
Over this last few weeks I have seen some of the flower
arrangements Sally van Gent has been demonstrating to her
pupils, particularly the native flowers, so I looked around for some information as to what would be suitable
plants to grow for use in flower arrangements, here are some suggestions =
Some of the more common varieties used for this purpose include Thryptomenes, Boronias, Banksias and
Telopia. From only a modest collection of native plants it is possible to have some type of indoor arrangement
all year round. Obviously spring flowers offer the most variety and many outstanding displays are possible.
Australian native flowers are also very popular as dried specimens. West Australian Dryandras,
Conospermum (Smoke Bush) and Anigosanthos (Kangaroo Paw) and most Banksias dry easily and well. A
photo in a magazine I noted, showed a flower arrangement of
Callistemon Harkness’ providing the colour with Flannel Flowers
providing contrast and a softening effect, it was lovely. We should get
some good ideas for this purpose when we visit Marilyn Sprague’s
native flower nursery in a few weeks’ time.

ANSWERS TO CRYPTIC CLUES (page 7)
BENT – a double meaning. This clue is fairly obvious and has no definition.
EARPHONES, ie. EARP and HONES.
“Earp” refers to Wyatt Earp, then “hones” is another word for sharpens. The straight definition, located at
the end of the clue is “listening devices”.
BOASTING, i.e. BOA and STING stitched together.
“Boa” is a kind of snake, and a bite is known as a “sting”. The straight clue, the definition, can be found at
the end, “too much proud talk”.
