Program Resources
It’s exciting to start a new year as the Program Resources chairperson, especially since I
had the opportunity to purchase many new books last year. Now is your chance to browse the
new selections and take books back to your units for reading enjoyment during the spring and
summer months.
During the Butler District spring meeting I’ll have the privilege of distributing the
Reading Program certificates to those individuals that completed the program in 2017.
If your unit doesn’t have a Reading Program maybe 2018 would be a good time to start
one and join the others in discovering all that the program has to offer.
Gwen Isaac, chairperson
Communications
If I have your e-mail address you’ll be receiving the newsletter by way of the internet.
I did get a few more e-mail addresses at our Butler District Fall meeting at New Brighton
UMC; therefore more of our members will get a chance to read the newsletter.
I need your assistance: please spread the word that I am interested in receiving the
additional e-mail addresses of persons not in my contact list, so they may also get a copy of
the newsletter.

Membership, Nurture, and Outreach
It’s time again to fill out the membership census form for 2017. There are 19 units and
I have received only 8 census forms (1 by phone, 5 by snail mail, 1 by e-mail, and 1 entered their
unit statistics on the UMW website). You can go online to: www.unitedmethodist.org and
enter the information yourself and let me know, or send me the information and I will submit
it.
Information needed is: church name, unit name, district, conference, unit type, name
of President, phone number of President, # of members as of January 1, 2017, # of members
added, #of members lost due to death/other.
Thank you for your attention to filling out this very important form.

Social Action
Hi chairladies of Social Action for your units. As you know we have a
lengthy list of topics of interest for Social Action, such as: Domestic Violence,
Bulling (in school 7 cyber), Right to Vote, Pay Equity, Health Issues, Immigration,
Human Trafficking, Civil Rights, and Justice (Environmental, Disability, Economic
Climate, Racial, etc.).
Starting this year I plan on having a “Social Action Minute” at each of our
monthly unit meetings and I suggest that you do the same. Information can be
found on these items in our monthly “Response” magazine. For example, at our
February meeting, I am going to use the article on page 44 of February 2018’s
“Response” under ACT on “RACIAL JUSTICE.”
Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed

Welcome to all of you.
The number of Butler District local units has decreased in number from 29 units in 2014
to 19 units in 2018. That means that the remaining units might have to dig a little deeper into
their pockets to help meet our Mission Pledge.
As we start a new year together please take time to read the information below and
keep a copy handy for future reference throughout the 2018 year. I truly appreciate the proper
forms being sent with all the required information on them.
CONCERNING UNIT GIVING:
I would encourage each unit to submit $25.00 toward the Christian Vocation Scholarship Fund,
and $.50 per member to the A & MD Fund as soon as possible. This gives the Conference money
to award the scholarships, and the District operating money.
The Conference is asking each unit to contribute $40. To Mission u (School of Missions). Please
use the form located in the newsletter. The checks should be made out to: WPA Mission u and
sent to address on the form.
Please continue to support Ruth M. Smith Center. Send contributions directly to them. Their
address is: P.O. Box 576 Sheffield, PA 16347. They are always in need of support.
Please encourage your unit to be a 5 Star unit in 2018. Consult your handbook to find the
guidelines.
Remember to use the Gift to Mission cards ($5. Each) and the Gift in Memory cards (any amount
$5 or more) to honor /remember special men or women. Can be given by the unit or
individuals.
The Special Mission Recognition pins can also be used to honor someone special (doesn’t need
to be a UMW member). The minimum cost is $40.00 and comes with pin and certificate.
CONCERNING REMITTANCE FORMS:
PLEASE send the proper forms with your checks. Forms can be found in the back of the
handbook or downloaded from www.unitedmethodistwomen.org I have enclosed 4 different
remittance forms for your convenience( if you receive a copy of the newsletter in the mail).
PLEASE make all checks out to “Butler District UMW.
Two blank Special Recognition certificates are kept on hand. If you need one in a hurry, let me
know. Otherwise, please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.
Send all remittances to: Clara Phillips

PROGRAM – Missionary Conference – Alaska! This is part of the Geographical study from Mission u, and part of the study available to earn a Mission Study Certificate. Our speaker will be Rev. Cyndi Bloise (brief bio below), one of 2 Mission Ambassadors for the Missionary Conferences study which also includes Oklahoma Indian and Red Bird Missionary Conferences. The photo of the buildings is the current location of AK Child and Family in Anchorage. Join us and hear all about this and so much more! Cyndi is a pastor at Jefferson UMC in the Pittsburgh District. She has always had a passion for mission,
participating in and leading not only short-term mission trips (Uganda, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Kentucky, Oklahoma,
Alabama, Somerset), but also working regularly with low-income individuals in the communities to which she has
been appointed.
Cyndi completed her M.Div. in 2006 at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and completed her D.Min. in the Missional
Church in 2012 at United Theological Seminary.
Cyndi has been married to Frank for almost 31 years. They have three grown daughters and a son-in-law who is like
a son. They also have two doggie daughters.
