“NopriorityfacingournationismoreimportantthanputtingAmericansbacktowork,”leadsarecentreportpublishedbytheU.S.ChamberofCommerce.

Whilecongressvotesonbailoutsandstimuluspackages,The State of World Tradeclaimsworldtradeistheanswer.“Wecannotrelyondomesticconsumptiontogeneratemoredemandforthegoodsandservicesweproduce,”thepublicationstates.

Tony van Aken,theMobileAreaChamber’sdirectorofinternationaltrade,agrees.Hesaysfreetradeagreementswithgrowingeconomies,suchasPanama,inthemidstofexpandingthePanamaCanal,arekeytotheeconomicrecoveryandsustainability.“Allyouhavetodoislookattheresultsfollowingotheragreements.Exportsincreased.Exportscreatejobs.Jobsincreased.Andanumberoflocalcompaniesaresuccessfullysellingtheirproductinnewmarkets.”

TheU.S.ChamberandtheMobileAreaChamberareworkingtobringadditionalfreetradeagreements(FTAs)totheforefrontofcongressionalaction.Hereareafewofthefactsusedtomaketheircase:

•SincethepassageofNAFTA,U.S.exportsincreasedby300percent,created40millionjobsandaccountformorethan$1.2millionoftwo-waytradeperminute.

•80percentofeconomicconsumptiontakesplaceoutsideoftheU.S.

•Exportsgeneratedtwo-thirdsoftheU.S.economicgrowthbetween2007and2008.

•TheU.S.istheworld’slargestexporter,andisapproaching$2trillion.

•50percentofworldtradeoccursthroughFTAswith385agreementsinexistenceworldwide.

Whatisneededtomaintainthecurrentexportingmomentum?“Simple,keepexporting,”saidvanAken.

Signingaleaseagreementfor25percentoftheGMBuilding,ownedbyRetirementSystemsofAlabama,earnedBancTrustFinancialGrouptherighttoadditsnametooneofMobile’soldestdowntownofficetowers.

NowcalledtheRSA-BankTrustBuilding,thebankwilloccupythefirstfloor,mezzanineandfloors25through31,oncerenovationsarecompletein2011.Currentlytheholdingcompany,BancTrustFinancial,islocatedat100SaintJosephSt.anditssubsidiarybank,BankTrust,at150NorthRoyalSt.

BancTrustFinancialistheholdingcompanyofBankTrust,theonlypubliclytradedbankholdingcompanyheadquarteredinMobile.

GoodNewsFoundinExportingStatistics

Alabamaexportsarereboundingthisyearafteradramaticdecreasein2009,withperformancedrivenlargelybythestate’sautoindustry.

Alabamais27thinthenationforexportincreasesfromJanuarythroughJune2010,registering32.1percentgrowth,accordingtoWISERTrade,producedbytheWorldInstituteforStrategicEconomicResearch.Nationally,exportsareupby22.68percent.

Locally,cargothroughthePortofMobilecontinuestoimprove,albeitataslowpace,saidJudith Adams,marketingvicepresidentfortheAlabamaStatePortAuthority.

“Overall,volumesarebetterthanlastyear,whichwashithardbytheglobalrecession,”saidAdams.Shenamedseveralcommoditygroupsthathavesignificantlyincreasedoverthepreviousperiodexportsin2009:•Forestproductsexports,up17percent;•Coalexports,up18percent;

•Containerexports,up27percent;•Grainexports,up33percent;•Pipeexports,up50percent;and•Chemicalsexports,up70percent.

AccordingtoBill Rowan,vicepresidentofN-TronCorp.,exportsaccountfor25percentoftheMobile-basedcompany’sbusinessandareup35percentfortheyear.Rowanaddsexportshaveincreasedoverthelastfouryearsandheanticipateswillreach45percentbyyear’send.N-Tron’stopsellersareitsindustrialnetworkequipment,withChinadrivingthemajorityofthisincreaseandEuropeinwhatRowancallsa“distantsecondplace.”

“SinceoverseasmarketsarealsorecoveringfromtheworldwiderecessionweareseeingmanyofAlabama’straditionalexports,includingsoybeans,ironpipes,chemicalandforestryproducts,showingsignificantgrowthover2009,”saidHilda Lockhart,directoroftheAlabama

DevelopmentOffice’sinternationaldivision.

“WehavealongwaytogoafterseeingsuchahighgrowthinAlabamaexportsfrom2004to2008,”saidLockhart.

OnetickettotheMobileAreaChamber’sannualmeetinginJanuaryhelpedJay Saiter withB-FastBolt&Supplysealathree-yearcontractwithThyssenKruppSteelmillrecently.SaitersaidthathenotonlyhadtheopportunitytomeetwithThyssenKrupp’sleadershipbutmanagersofvarioussuppliercompaniesaswell.

B-Fast’scontractisfortheVMI(VendorManagedInventory)ofallthreemills,includingthecoldrollmill,hotstripandhotdippedgalvanizedMill.

“Thecontactisasignificantadditiontoourcustomerbaseandwillcontributetoourgrowthandexpansionplans,”saidSaiter,whohandlesoutsidesalesandisaprojectmanager.Thecompanyrecently

hiredafewnewemployeesasaresultofthecontract,hesaid,adding“asthisprogramgrows,wedefinitelyanticipateexpansionofstaffwithsitemanagers,technical,salesandmaterialsupportpersonnel.”

TheproductsB-Fastwillsupplywillbeusedformachineryinstallation,facilitymodificationandupdatesandpreventivemaintenance.

B-FastBoltislocatedatBrookleyFieldandistheMobiledivisionofBirminghamFastener,aleadingmanufactureranddistributoroffastenersandvariousindustrialbolts.BirminghamFasteneranditsaffiliatedcompaniesemploymorethan250people.

Overthelastdecademinoritybusinessesnearlydoubledfrom3millionto5.8million,registeringa46percentincreaseandoutpacingthegrowthofallU.S.firms,accordingtopreliminaryestimatesbytheU.S.CensusBureau.

ThesamegrowthtrendisbeingseenlocallysaidDarrell Randle,theMobileAreaChamberofCommerce’ssmallbusinessdevelopmentvicepresident.AccordingtoRandle,businessesareincreasingbymostsectorsincludingHispanic,Asian,NativeAmericanandAfrican-American.

“We’vemadegreatstrides,butweneedtodomore,”hesaid.“Thereareanumberofsmallbusinessresourcesdedicatedtohelpentrepreneursdevelopandgrowtheirprofit.”

Therearemorethan27millionU.S.firmsthatlogmorethan$30billioninsalesandreceipts.Thenumberoffirmsgrew18percentfrom2002to2007,while

salesandrevenuegrew34percent.

Accordingtothecensusbureau,thisistheonlycomprehensive,regularlycollecteddataforbusinessesandbusinessownersthatrecordsgender,minoritystatus,race,ethnicityandveteranstatus.Thesurveyincludesindividualproprietorships,partnershipsandallcorporationswithreceiptsof$1,000ormore.

MobileCountybecamethefirstintheareatojoinaselectgroupofpropertiesinAlabama.VirginiaStationPhase1,a168-acresitenearCreola,recentlyearnedanAdvantageSitedesignation.

LedbytheEconomicDevelopmentPartnershipofAlabama(EDPA)inBirmingham,theAlabamaAdvantageSiteprogramisavoluntaryindustrialsitepreparednesseffortcreatedtomakethestatemorecompetitive.Withmorethan400siteslistedontheEDPAstatedatabase,VirginiaStationisoneof23propertiestocurrentlycarrythedistinctivelabelandthefirstinMobileCounty.

Thesite’sapplicationwascoordinatedthroughtheMobileAreaChamber’seconomicdevelopmentdepartment,withstaffassistingwithdocumentationincludingasetofstandarddatarelatedtoownership/control,environmentalconditionsandinfrastructurestatus.GulfStatesEngineeringprovidedprojectmanagement,sitelayoutanddesignservices.“Thereisasignificantinvestmentincapital,timeandmaterialon

thelandowner’sparttosuccessfullycompletetheAdvantageSiteprocess,”saidHerman Tinsley,theChamber’sseniorproject

researchmanager,theAdvantageSite

designationallowsformorefavorablemarketingopportunitiesandprovidespotentialindustrywithimmediateaccesstonecessarydocumentation,enablingcompaniestoreducedecision-makingtime.

Ruffinaddedthereareseveraladditionalsitesthatcouldqualifyandwhoselandownersareinterestedinpursuingthisdesignation.

openedthissummer,depictingthetimeoftheNativeAmericansthroughthemodernperiod,whentheareabecamea1,100-acrerecreationalparkforlocalshipyardworkersandtheirfamilies.

OriginallyaMethodist-EpiscopalchurchbeforetheCivilWarandlaterthefirstschoolhouseinEightMile,theantebellumchurchmovedfromitsoriginallocationinWhistlerinthe1980sinanticipationofthemuseumopening.

“Ithastakenus30years,butlittlebylittlewehavepreservedthehistoryforalltosharein,”saidMobileCountyCommissionPresidentMerceria Ludgood.“Andwhatissogreataboutthismomentisthatwearestilllivinginthehistoryofthisplacethroughthefamiliesthatlivedandstilllivehere.Theygaveustheirchurchandpersonalpropertythattellthestory.”

Themuseumisfilledwithartifactsthatportraythehistoryandpeoplewhodevelopedtheareaandincludesaheavyconcentrationofartifactsfromthecolonialera,sinceitrepresentsthefirsttimethatEuropeans–inthiscase,theFrench–settledintheregion.

Themuseumisfreeandopentothepublic.

Mobile County Commission President Merceria Ludgood and Commissioner Mike Dean dedicate a new museum holding artifacts from the colonial era near Eight Mile.

Whilenationallythenumberofhighschoolgraduatesdecreasedby11,000,areportpublishedbyEducation WeekmagazineattributedAlabamawiththe12thhighestincrease.Diplomas Count: Graduation by the Numbersmeasuredresultsfrom1997to2007,thelatestdataavailable.

Morestudentsarebeingeducatedtoahigherstandard,acknowledgedMobileAreaEducationFoundationChiefExecutiveOfficerCarolyn Akers,butsheisnotcontentwiththenumbers.“Whilewecelebratethegrowthwehavemadeasastate,wemustcontinuetodevelopnewpathwaysthatintegratecollegeandcareerpreparationandprovidetherigorandrelevancythatpreparesourstudentsforthefuture.”

Mobileleadsthestatewithinterventionstrategiestohelpstudentsgraduate,resultinginhundredsofstudentsgraduatinglastyearthatotherwisewouldnothave,saidAkers.

Conversely,Education Week’sreportestimates1.297millionstudentsfromtheClassof2010willnotgraduate,with24,328oftheminAlabama.“ThisisanunacceptablenumberofstudentsandgivesAlabamathe17thworstgraduationrateinthenation,”saidAkers.

Shebelievesthestateisontherighttracktoattackthisissue.“Alabamahasstoodoutasanationalleaderbyadoptingsomeofthemostrigorousgraduationstandardsinthenation.Yet,businessandindustrystillindicatethatthesestandardsarenothighenough,”explainedAkers.“Thus,wehavetocontinuetoraisethestandards,andthat’swhatwearedoinginMobile.”

Fiveofeighthigh-poverty,high-performingschoolsthroughoutthestatedesignatedasTorchbearerschoolsarelocatedinMobileCounty–andtheyholdtheNo.1throughNo.5rankingsforimprovedperformance,accordingtotheAlabamaDepartmentofEducation.

Theeducationdepartmentrecognizesschoolswhereatleast80percentoftheschool’sstudentsqualifyforfreeorreduced-pricedlunch;atleast80percentofthestudentsinelementaryormiddleschoolspassstandardizedreadingandmathtests;or95percentofstudentspassallfivesectionsoftheAlabamaHighSchoolGraduationExam.

InAugust,U.S.SecretaryofEducation,Arne DuncanvisitedTorchbearerrecipientGeorgeHallElementary,andpraisedtheschoolforimprovingfromoneoftheworstschoolsinAlabamatooneofthebestschoolsinthecountry.
