Dear Parents I trust all our mums, grandmothers, aunties and other family members had a lovely Mother’s Day yesterday despite the cool, wet and windy conditions. Hopefully you were all suitably spoiled whether with good wishes, breakfast in bed, some lovely gifts or just surrounded by your loved ones.

Road Safety Around Our School

Over the past week, I have received information from a number of concerned parents who have seen vehicles double-parked and parked across driveways at pickup and drop-off times. The safety of our students is paramount here at Blakehurst Public School. Please respect the road rules in order to keep our children safe and to also respect our neighbours by parking appropriately and allowing them to enter and exit their driveways as they need to. Parents/carers are also reminded not to park in the staff car park.

Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and support when driving around our school.

Mother’s Day

I would like to thank Rachel, the Fundraising Committee and volunteers who ran the Mother’s Day stall on Friday providing a selection of gifts to our students so they could spoil their mums, nannas or someone special on Sunday. Your efforts are always appreciated and don’t go unnoticed.

Farewell Miss Trench

After a long career dedicated to the students whom she taught, Miss Trench has informed me that she is retiring from permanent employment and her position as assistant principal at Blakehurst PS. I know the many students she had in her care as a teacher at Blakehurst PS over the years will remember her fondly for the support and encouragement to achieve that she instilled in the students. On behalf of the whole school community, I wish her the very best for the future.

OC applications

A reminder that online applications for Year 4 students seeking OC class placement for Year 5 in 2019 close this Friday.

NAPLAN Students in Years 3 and 5 will be commencing NAPLAN tomorrow and continuing over two weeks (May 15-24). This year we are participating in the online version of the test after a successful trial in 2017. The assessments provide a ‘snapshot in time’ of a student’s knowledge and understanding of the concepts being tested. Parents can support their child through encouragement and minimising the stress that the media and coaching colleges often generate. Results should arrive at school during term three. A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast is a great way to be ready for the assessments.

Australian Early Development Census – AEDC

Every 3 years since 2009, the Australian Government has undertaken a census of all children in kindergarten. This information is used to identify communities where families and children may require extra support and to help shape the future and wellbeing of Australian children. A note detailing this information was sent home last week to all Kindergarten parents/carers.

Band

Over the past twelve months the school band has made tentative steps to re-establishing, and the students were showing real progress with their learning. Disappointingly, the tutor is no longer able to attend and once again, the search for a replacement tutor is on. Students who have instruments may keep practising in the interim, or return the instrument to the office until a new tutor commences.

The following students presented seven green

My best wishes for the coming week.

Cross Country

The students in Years 3-6 participated in our annual cross country race last Tuesday. It was a fantastic day for running, with sunny but mild weather which was ideal.

Congratulations to all the students who competed in the Cross Country Carnival last Tuesday. All students that competed should be commended for their efforts and determination in completing the course and battling out to the finish line.

Thank you to Mrs Talwar for organising the day, and to the staff, students and parents/carers who helped make the carnival a success and thank you to those who came along to support our students at the cross country.

The first 4 winners in each age group will represent our school at the Botany Bay Zone Cross Country Championships on Thursday 24 May 2018 at Scarborough Park. Notes will go home this week to the students who will be competing at the Zone Cross Country. We wish all of our representatives the best of luck on the day.

Peer Support

Session 2 - Strong me! Our session this week for students involved in Stronger Together - our Peer Support module, encourages students to identify their personal strengths as a key protective factor to address bullying and looks at ways of utilising these positive attributes to support themselves and others to build resilience. Parents of participating students might like to ask what they said or thought their strengths might be and suggest some more.

Walk Safely to School Day

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 18 MAY 2018

It’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

• Walking with them the whole way to school

• If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop

• If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Children who participate will receive a sticker.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 18 May 2018!

Too Sick for School?

NSW Health Warning Influenza

Please do not send your children to school if they are not well. We have had an increased amount of children coming up to sick bay with symptoms of influenza and vomiting, which is going around at the moment. This seems to be widespread this winter and we are seeing many students with headaches, coughs and head colds at school. We know these symptoms are also keeping many of our students at home. Whilst we understand that children may become sick during the day, if they have any of these symptoms overnight or in the morning before school, please consider keeping them at home until they are well. Illnesses are transferred very easily in a large group of people. If your child is not feeling well or if you have to give your child e.g. Panadol, Nurofen or Dimetapp because of a temperature or illness in the morning, then your child should not be at school

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The symptoms of influenza range from mild to severe.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of influenza experience some or all of the following symptoms:

fever and chills

cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose

muscle aches, joint pains, headaches and fatigue (feeling very tired)

nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea (more common in children than adults)

If your child is sent to sick bay with these symptoms we will call you to collect your child in order to help

limit the further spread to others.

What can be done to stop the spread of influenza?

Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. All parents/carers should teach their children about good hygiene practices. Any child with symptoms should remain at home until they are well.

There are several effective ways we can stop the spread of influenza.

Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should be advised to stay home until their symptoms are gone.

Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.

Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If your child is unwell, please avoid taking them out unless it’s to see a doctor. They’ll recover more quickly and you won’t spread their illness to others.
