Year 6 are looking good!

A big thank you to our P&C who have kindly presented our Year 6 students with their jerseys. We know they

will enjoy wearing them in their last year at Burrawang.

Gymnastics

Thanks to our Sporting Schools funding,

we have been able to greatly subsidise

the cost of this term’s gymnastics

program. Gymnastics is a mandatory

component of the PDHPE syllabus and

is a program students will participate in

every stage of their primary schooling.

Premier Sporting Challenge

Our school is participating once again in

this year’s challenge. This challenge is

a joint challenge where all students

must work together to attain the highest

results. Students are being challenged

to increase the amount of daily exercise

they do and this is recorded on the tally

cards.

Congratulations to Le and Ella who

have been selected as our school’s

Sporting Challenge leaders. They will

be responsible for updating the online

challenge sheets and motivating and encouraging our students to increase their activity.

Reports

Our teachers are well into implementing assessments with your children, spending hours analysing test results

and evidence to prepare your child’s half yearly report.

In line with departmental requirements set down by the government, we are required to report to parents using

five levels. These levels are: Outstanding; High; Sound; Basic and Limited.

As a guide:

o Outstanding is given to students who are working well above stage level. These students are able to

constantly demonstrate a standard of learning which places them in the next stage/grade to their

current year of learning. These students constantly attain perfect results.

o High is given to students who are working towards the next stage level. These students are able to

demonstrate mastery of their stage/grade level and can demonstrate a standard of learning which

almost places them in the next stage/grade.

o Sound is given to students who are working at stage level. These students are able to constantly

demonstrate a standard of learning which places them in their current year of learning. THIS is the

result all students are trying to attain each and every day.

o Basic is given to students who are working towards attaining their stage level. These students are trying

to master the standard of learning appropriate for their current year of learning.

o Limited is given to students who are working below stage level. These students receive work which is

modified by the teacher to suit the child and have different completion expectations.

Enjoy reading your child’s report and remember to celebrate your child’s achievement with them. Look at the

effort mark as this tells you a lot about their performance in class. Reports will go home in Week 9.

Genius Hour

Students this year have once again been participating in one hour each week of learning about something that interests them – Genius hour! All students K-6 have been planning and developing their expertise in their interest area and we look forward to their presentations at the end of this term. Parents will be invited to attend this exciting presentation. Dates to be advised.

Library News

Just a reminder that Wednesday is now library day for all students. Don’t forget your library bag and books. Also, remind your children to go onto the Premier’s Reading Challenge site and log the books that they are

reading.

Rosemeadow PS and Burrawang PS connection

We already know the great benefits our students gain from our close links and sharing that happens across our small schools in our local area. It is also important for our teachers to gain these benefits of sharing, planning and learning with other teachers, to ensure we have the greatest impact on our students’ learning.

We have been fortunate to be able to form a link with Rosemeadow PS in Campbelltown, in order to foster a mutual exchange of skills and expertise. Rosemeadow is a large school who have specific staff employed to support their literacy and numeracy programs. As part of our connection, next week, Mrs Laval will be spending the week at Rosemeadow PS, and their Instructional Leader, Catherine Flamos will be taking her place here at Burrawang. This will allow both teachers and schools to share expertise. Mrs Flamos will be working with both staff and students here at Burrawang, supporting us with our Strategic Direction of developing “Consistently high standards of educational practice.” Mrs Laval will be sharing some of our 21st Century learning with Rosemeadow, while she uses this experience to bring back some new ideas for Burrawang.

Term 2 Week 4 Wednesday 18th May 2016 3

This is a very exciting opportunity for both schools. It is planned that this partnership will continue as teachers

from both schools support each other through shared educational practice.

Public Speaking

This year both classes will be participating in school public speaking competitions. These are aimed to give students experience and practice in the very important component of our English syllabus, Speaking and Listening.

Parents will be invited to listen to our speeches in Weeks 6 and 7. Students from Stage 2 and 3 will then be

selected to represent our school in the Multicultural Public Speaking competition.

3-6 class news

The senior class have been doing some excellent work with algebra over the last two weeks. Students have demonstrated their abilities to solve maths problems with missing numbers using a variety of strategies. They then tested their peers by creating increasingly complex problems for each other to solve.

In art this week the senior class have begun creating 'Zentangles.' These intricate designs reflect the detail in the popular 'adult colouring books.' I have been impressed with the way students have shown care and put so much effort into their creations.

Finally, congratulations to all the students in years 3 and 5 who completed NAPLAN last week. It was a busy week but students in all years showed flexibility and maturity in adapting to the changes in routine. Thank you students!

K-2 class news

For our History unit ‘Change over time’, Sophie’s

nanny came in to talk about what it was like

growing up in Western Australia on a farm. She

spoke about how she had to ride 1.5km on her bike

to the bus and then sometimes the bus would get

bogged, get flat tyres or run out of fuel. At school,

Nanny would eat meat or jam sandwiches (with

homemade bread) and fruit. The playground

games were marbles, knuckles and hide and seek.

On the farm, nanny’s family had saddleback pigs,

Clydesdale horses and cows. Her jobs were

collecting eggs, sticks for the wood burning stove,

feeding the pigs and she started milking the cow

when she was 4 years old. Electricity came to the farm in 1950 and the phone in 1956. The students listened

intently for the whole session and asked lots of interesting questions or made comments. We look forward to

hearing from Griffin’s grandma tomorrow.

Recorder news – year 3-6

Please remember your recorders on Wednesdays and PLEASE practise everyday. If you haven’t heard your

child playing the recorder around the house or out in the paddock…you need to remind them and assist them in

getting the Haberfield Public School YouTube clips up so they are playing at the right tempo.

Don’t forget!

There is a growing amount of lost property in the bucket. Please check for any missing clothes. Any clothes that remain in here without names will be put into the clothing pool.
