The site features many never -before-seen treasures, most of which have been recently donated by Jeannie Howard Siegman, the great-great- granddaughter of W.D.M. and Agnes Howard. For example, the Howard Family Co!ection includes three letters written from the 30-year -old San Francisco merchant W.D.M. Howard to his 16-year -old fiancé during their three-week courtship during July of 1849. One can also listen to The Pioneer March, a song specifically written for W.D.M. Howard, the first president of The Society of California Pioneers. The site’s “Virtual Museum” includes a pen and ink drawing of architect George H. Howard’s huge formal garden dubbed “Versailles” the axis of which is now Roehampton Road in Hillsborough. The Mills family section shows an image of a 143-carat emerald necklace, specially designed for D.O. Mills’s granddaughter by Cartier. In the Easton section, one can read the dramatic story of Adeline and Ansel Eastons’ honeymoon shipwreck. The Burlingame Historical Society hopes that the 24-7 worldwide access to web exhibits, such as this one, will be another way to entertain and educate the public about our fascinating local history. Did you know?Food and drink are never allowed in the Society’s Martha Rosman May archives. An exception was made, however, in August, when we surprised our matriarch with cake and flowers in honor of her birthday. Thank you, Martha, for your many years of selfless devotion. You have kept our archives in tip top shape. (And, yes, Martha, we made sure sure that we removed all the crumbs!)

Just in time for Halloween, retired Burlingame Police Chief Jack Van Etten and retired Police Commander John Parkin will recount a few of Burlingame’s most intriguing crimes that took place during their tenure in the last decades of the 20th century.

Please join us for what will surely be a memorable evening. (Lane Room of the Main Library).

Barbara Christine Hoekenga - Life memberMany thanks to Copenhagen Bakery for the plentiful donation of delicious pastries for our Quarterly Open House event at the station in August. The Society greatly appreciates the generous financial support of Jeannie Howard Siegman towards the newly-launched “Founding Families” digital exhibit (see #ont page) and that of Jim and Sally Meakin for their generous donation. Kent Lauder has helped us, yet again, with our plumbing issues -- thank you, Kent! Special thanks to Rodney Vigil at Plasti-Print Inc., for continuing to provide us with high quality, low cost prints for our numerous museum displays.

President’s Message

Despite soaring temperatures, Bay Area plein air painters of all ages turned out for the 4th Annual Paint Burlingame Event on September 30th and created beautiful pieces of artwork that reflect numerous facets of our city. Community members purchased several pieces of work on the spot. (We’ve included a few in this newsletter). A very special

thank you goes to VP Russ Cohen for his hard work and devotion to this event.

Last, but not least, a big Thank You to Board member and author Joanne Garrison, for the enormous amount of research she has undertaken for the better part of a year, in order to create a truly engaging and extensive web exhibit (see pg. 1) together with the technical expertise of Christine Hoekenga. No doubt this body of work will bring public awareness to the considerable contributions of the pioneer families that founded and shaped the fine cities of Burlingame and Hillsborough.
