“And they’re off!” After a long winter layover, the NCR 2006 competition season has finally arrived. allows additional cars on the course pro-vided approval is obtained from the SE-DIV Executive Steward and the Chief Steward for the event. Using her powers of persuasion, Sara was able to obtain the necessary approvals and we all crossed our fingers that “no shows” and attrition would reduce the numbers to a reasonable level.

Come race day, we had a little over a hundred cars take the track to qualify. While undoubtedly the largest group we’ve ever attempted to put on the track, we felt we could accommodate them all without undue risk. What we didn’t real-ize was how difficult it would be to quickly get all those cars in their as-signed grid positions and on the track to qualify. With the help of the seasoned, veteran grid workers and some additional volunteers, we just managed to get the cars in position in time. However, we soon found that we could not feed the cars onto the track fast enough, as the lead cars completed their lap of the track before we could get the last of the cars off the grid! As a result, a few cars had to enter the track via the pit entrance. We sincerely apologize to anyone that was inconvenienced by this.

Ultimately, I believe 101 cars took to the track for the Saturday enduro. I’m sure

RE’s Report (Continued from page 1)

this is a new NCR and probably track record. Gridding for the race itself went much more smoothly due to the assistance of a large number of volun-teers that turned out to help. I noticed that all the grid volunteers enjoyed the work and I think Janet Bruce may have gained some new permanent grid work-ers as a result! Thanks to the Def-fenbaugh and Gallimore “clans” and all

the others that helped out in our mo-ment of need!

Since the enduros were oversubscribed, I opted to skip both and just run the SARRC race. This created some free time for me and gave me the opportu-nity to observe the event and chat with competitors and workers. The first thing I noted was that we had a fantas-

tic turnout of F&C workers. Possible reasons for this may include folks having cabin fever from the long winter; folks looking forward to lots of action from exceptionally large fields of cars; or, more likely, Flag Chief Chuck Stanley making an extra effort to have the corner stations fully staffed in anticipation of carnage that fortunately never material-ized! I heard lots of positive comments regarding registration and tech. Many noted they had never experienced such an efficient and short registration. Based on my observations, there were never more than 5 to 10 people in line and gen-erally far less.

While I did not get to spend much time with the tech staff, I understand they were able to complete over 50 annual tech inspections during Friday! I think it’s fantastic that they were able to ac-complish such a feat but it would be nice to get more annual inspections done be-fore the event. We are currently looking at better ways of conducting annual techs next year.

Based on numerous conversations with drivers waiting in impound and those in the paddock, everyone appeared to have had a good time. Even those who ran in Saturday’s enduro had nothing but posi-tive things to say. Most competitors in that race did note that it was rather crowded but many felt that the large number of competitors made for more fun and “interesting” racing. While the final numbers are not in, the event was profitable and should help replenish our coffers.

Other notes from the event include our continuing need for volunteers in Sound Control and the need for some standardi-zation on where to put tech stickers on the cars. While Sara Snider was able to track down qualified individuals to oper-ate Sound Control for this event, she had to go to great efforts and recruit from outside our region. I have to believe we can find volunteers from within our own ranks to man this critical specialty, so please consider stepping up to help out. We are also still looking for help man-ning the table for merchandise sales on Saturday or Sunday and can always use more in Flagging & Communication as

RE’s Report (Continued from page 3)

well as the other specialties. Please think about coming out and trying one of the specialties, you may be surprised how much fun it can be. Many of this weekend’s volunteers did!

The tech sticker issue was brought up after the weekend by folks working grid. Due to the large run groups, they did not have much time to check belts, helmets and, of course, tech stickers before the cars moved onto the track. The fact that the sticker location varied from car to car made things even more difficult so it was suggested that the region work towards standardizing the location of tech stickers based on the types of car (sedan vs. formula). The amusing story of the weekend went something like this: a grid worker asked a rookie driver where his tech sticker was…to which the driver ges-tured towards the back cowling on his formula car. Upon inspection, the grid worker was amused to find a “dash plaque” stuck to the side of the car! The grid worker politely informed the driver this was not quite a proper tech sticker and what the correct one actu-ally looked like and, lo and behold, the driver showed up next time with the proper sticker!

I think all the drivers noticed the new and improved station #14 which is now right in their line of sight while ap-

proaching the turn at the end of the back straight. However, the corner workers noted that they would lose sight of some of the lower cars as they dropped into the “dip” at the end of the back straight. While this location is easier for the driv-ers to see, officials at VIR are concerned that its location at the end of the long fast back straight may be too hazardous, es-pecially for events with high horse power cars. Based on recent conversa-tions, there’s a chance that 14 may be moved back to its original location on track left.

THANKS TO ALL FOR HELPING MAKE THE EVENT A GREAT SUC-CESS!

On the local front, the Region Board of Directors found itself with 2 vacancies at the April meeting. These vacancies are the result of the lack of a Chapter Coor-dinator representing the Dan River Chap-ter and the resignation of Member-at-Large, Dwight Pardee. The good news is that the BOD filled Dwight’s position by replacing him with Joedy Pennington, based on procedures outlined in the Re-gion By-Laws. You may recall that Joedy was the runner-up in the 2006 elections. Joedy hails from Winston Sa-lem. Hopefully we can get him to intro-duce himself in a future newsletter along with the other board members.

On to other SEDIV and National items. Elsewhere in this newsletter you should find the unofficial minutes from the SE-DIV RE’s meeting. While official min-utes have not yet been prepared, I felt it would be useful to publish these while the issues were still relevant. A descrip-tion of the other SEDIV “goings on” can be found in a previous issue of the news-letter. Also worth noting is that there are some rumblings about calling a special meeting of the National Board of Direc-tors and the membership to discuss SCCA finances and budget with special emphasis on SCCA Pro (I have seen claims that SCCA Pro owes SCCA Inc, as much as 2 million dollars). This issue was raised at the National meeting but many felt they did not receive an ade-quate response. Keep your eyes open for further information on this issue and re-member to log onto the SCCA website and read the Fastrack news since this is the primary contact with what’s happen-ing at the national level.

Looking forward, it appears the Region’s next events include:

• the “Al Fairer SARRC/MARRS Challenge” double SARRC double MARRS at VIR May 12-14,

• the “Twin Rivers Mall” Autocross in New Bern on May 21,

• the Region’s first (I think) Driver School/ Regional Race at Rockingham the weekend of June 9-11 at Rocking-ham (Friday evening classroom manda-tory for students),

• a Rally, Saturday July 15th, in the Danville area,

and last but not least, the Region’s first Performance Driving Experience (PDX) at Rockingham the weekend of July 29-30.

Remember to put them on your calendar and try to attend one or all!

Based on a review of other region’s schools, the June Driver School should be the least expensive driver school on the East Coast and it also offers the op-portunity of a first race on Sunday for those able to complete their 2 school re-

RE’s Report (Continued from page 4)

quirements. We are looking for both students as well as drivers with Na-tional licenses to instruct for the school. Instructors who participate both days will receive a major discount on entry fee for the Sunday race, which will be a single 45 minute race for closed wheel cars. The race will in-clude a mandatory pit stop (with op-tional driver change) using the ex-tremely successful format from the Carolina Cup Pro Series (see the link to their website and rules for details). While paddock space is a little cramped at this facility, it does offer covered NASCAR garage space on a first come first served basis. Registra-tion forms and supplemental regula-tions should be available on the Re-gion’s website.

Unlike traditional track events, the July PDX is open to any street legal car that can pass a basic safety inspection. No roll bars, cages, driving suits or racing licenses are required. This event will be a great opportunity for Solo2 com-petitors, workers, and crew to come out and find out how much fun driving on track can be. Additional details will be posted on the web and in future news-letters.

That’s it for April & May and, as al-ways, let’s remember to have fun out there!

pared winner Tommy Pulliam, of Du-luth, Ga., and the BimmerHaus 1995 BMW M3 piloted by Lee Piccione, of Severn, Md. Dan Pedroza, of Round Rock, Texas, was third while co-driving with Piccione, and Pulliam's co-driver, Joel Fehrman, of Smyrna, Ga., was fourth, just 0.183-sec. behind Pedroza.

The next closest margin of the weekend was in Street Touring X, where Brian Fitzpatrick, of McKinney, Texas, battled intermittent pylon problems but still emerged with the STX victory in his BimmerHaus/CR Racing 1988 BMW M3. Phil Croy, of Strongsville, Ohio, made a last-ditch effort in the SoloRacer.com/Sherwin-Williams 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX to erase his defi-cit, but could only come within 0.108-sec. of Fitzpatrick. Ryan Barnard, of Grain Valley, Mo., was third in the Oasis Tan/18racing.com/Webb Motorsports 2006 Mini Cooper S JCW.

Though both battled pylons and a red-light, Brian Flanagan, of Signal Moun-tain, Tenn., outlasted co-driver Cliff Rosenberg, of Chattanooga, Tenn., to take D Street Prepared by 0.154-sec. in the Fastech/ChattanoogaMafia.com/Team Underdog 2000 BMW 328is. Craig Wilcox, of Blue Springs,

(CFR) and John Zuccarelli (FL) voted in opposition to the “One tire for Spec Miata” motion.

Executive Steward’s – Report given by Fred Schmucker. Fred Schmucker asked that the REs remember the drivers as any rule modifications are considered. The SIC had issues associated with Hurricane Katrina. The number of race Stewards (73) within the Division was mentioned. The appointment of certain administra-tors was reviewed. A “hand-out” was given to those individuals at the meeting listing the Divisional Administrators and listing many SEDiv Divisional Appoint-ments.

Each Racing Region was reminded to assure that an “Emergency Plan” was prepared for their respective racing facil-ity. If more than one region uses a site, it is likely that the “Emergency Plan(s)” can be shared. Samples / Examples of a properly prepared Emergency Plan were handed out to the racing regions.

Mark Senior (NC Region) made a mo-tion to approve the Executive Steward’s Report and to accept the appointments offered and listed in the handout. Danny Boyd (Dixie Region) offered a second to this motion. The REs voted to approve the motion.

Rally Cross – Report given by Gerald Street for David Brooks. Some rally cross class changes were discussed. Spe-cifically, the SE Div Rally Cross Pro-gram will adopt the 2006 class structure. A motion was made by

Walt Wurzbach (Gulf Coast Region) to approve the report and the class changes. Danny Boyd (Dixie Region) offered a second for the motion. The motion passed. Martin Bartlett (Central Caroli-nas Region) voted in opposition of the motion.

Directors’ Report was given by Kaye Fairer (Area 12 Director):

The SCCA hopes to have a new Presi-dent in place soon. Kaye Fairer told the REs that the selection committee had received a large number of resumes. Kaye also reviewed distribution of the “Directors’ Reports” with the REs and asked that the REs to share the

(Continued on page 8)

RE’s and race officials offered remarks pertaining to their experiences with the 600 roadsters at racing events.

A handout outlining the GTA rules was given to the REs from Butch Kummer (Atlanta Region).

A Spec Tire for the IT-7 class was dis-cussed. More information was re-quested from the drivers in the IT-7 class.

The current GCR rules pertaining to the tire(s) allowed in the Spec Miata class were reviewed.

The RE’s separately considered each of the topics listed above from the Class Review Board:

A motion was made by Martin Bartlett (CCR) to drop the Legend Cars. The motion was seconded by Glen Thomp-son (Blue Ridge Region RE). The mo-tion passed.

A motion was made by Glen Thomp-son (BRR) to approve the GTA rules as offered by Butch Kummer. This mo-tion was seconded by Tere Pulliam. This motion passed.

Concerning certain “Club Formula Continental Cars” (CFC), a motion was made by Martin Bartlett that the Ho-mologation date change was made with notice to competitors that they were on the two-year probation in regard to numbers of cars in that class, subject to discontinuation of class if numbers do not increase. This motion was sec-onded by Mark Senior (NCR). This motion passed.

Concerning the IT-7 Spec Tire – no action was taken.

In 2005, the REs voted to accept the “National/GCR” tire rule for the Spec Miata class. Now available, the current GCR rule specifies a single tire type for certain races. However the current GCR rule also allows the use of addi-tional tires for the Spec Miata at Re-gional races. A motion was made to clarify the Spec Miata tire rule for

SEDiv Competition by Martin Bartlett. Several REs seconded the motion. The REs voted 7 to 2 to approve a single tire (Toyo RA-1 205/50R/15) for all SE Div Competition. Rick Balderson

tin Bartlett (CCR) to donate $1000 to the SCCA University, $2000 to the SCCA Foundation and a large brick be pur-chased in memory of all SEDiv members who passed away in 2005. The donation to the Foundation should be made in honor all SEDiv members “lost” during 2005; however, no specific names should be associated with the donation. Danny Boyd (Dixie) seconded the motion. The Motion was unanimously passed by the REs.

Time Trials - Report given by Steve Tompkins. The SEDiv Time Trials pro-gram will have a strong 2006 schedule. Transponders were used for the first time at the time trials event held at The Nash-ville Super Speedway. Cool Shirt will once again be the title sponsor of the 2006 SEDiv Time Trials Championship Series.

Solo 2 – No report given (a schedule of SE Div Solo 2 events was given to Sharon Rollow by Karl Rickert).

Road Rally – No report given

ECR – Report given by Carol Cone. Some specific rule changes relating to the calculation of ECR point were dis-cussed. The specifics of these rule changes pertain to the number of events used to calculate, earn, and attain ECR points. The committee also approved each Area will have a double ECR in 2006; specifically the North Carolina Region (Area 12) will have a double in March and the Florida Region (Area 3) will have a double in June.

SARRC - Report was given by Jim Creighton. Waivers were granted to the Alabama Region for a double SARRC at Roebling Road in July and to the South Carolina Region for a double SARRC at Kershaw in April. The entry fee for the SIC was increased to $200. SARRC ap-proved T-shirt was discussed.

Class Review Board – A report was of-fered by Phil Mellor.

The participation number associated with several competition classes was re-viewed (FS, Legend Cars)

Placement (within a race group) of the 600 roadsters was discussed. Several

(South Carolina Region RE) to investi-gate the possibility of hosting our own site versus using the current site which is sponsored by SARRC. John Robinson will serve on this committee and other volunteers were solicited.

The location of future SEDiv annual meetings was discussed. Because of an existing contract, the 2007 Meeting will be held at Holiday Inn, Jekyll Island. The REs voted to authorize Jim Creighton to negotiate a contract extension with The Holiday Inn at Jekyll Island beyond 2007. Mark Senior (NCR) and Glen Thompson (BRR) voted in opposition.

Butch Kummer (ARE-Atlanta Region) offered some comments concerning the FEAR This, Inc. driver training program for younger drivers. No action was taken on this matter.

Kaye Fairer requested that the minutes from The SEDiv Meetings be sent to her within 10 days following each meeting in order that she can distribute them to the BOD.

Martin Bartlett (CCR) asked about the new PDX program. In addition, Martin specifically asked about the PDX pro-gram and the program’s relationship with the SCCA’s Club Racing Licensing Re-quirements. Butch Kummer and Toni Creighton explained that the PDX ex-perience could be used to document “track” experience(s). However, the opinions of the Club Racing Driving In-structors will still be used to qualify new club racers.

Motion to adjourn – Walt Wurzbach (Gulf Coast Region) – 2nd by Gerald Street (Chattanooga Region) time 12:30 PM

***Meeting Adjourned***

Clyde Bales. Mark Senior (NCR) sec-onded the motion (along with several additional REs). The motion passed unanimously.

Scheduling – Several modification were made to the 2006 schedule. Sharon Rollow documented the changes to the SE Div Schedule. The REs reviewed the 2006 schedule month by month. Kaye Fairer asked Phil Mel-lor to help the REs obtain rooms for the mid-year meeting to be held in Atlanta.

New Business –

Advertising for the SE Division – Sev-eral options associated with advertising and the various SEDiv Programs were discussed by the REs. A Motion was made by Danny Boyd (Dixie Region) and seconded by Gerald Street (Chattanooga Region) to allow Martin Bartlett to investigate the expenses as-sociated with obtaining ads in certain automotive publications. Ideally, any advertising would be used to help pro-mote participation for all of the SEDiv programs – (Club Racing, Road Rally, Solo 2, Time Trials, Rally Cross, etc)

A SE Division Web Site was discussed. Jim Creighton told the REs that links could be easily added to the existing web page (for SE Division racing) to help share information pertaining to the various SE Division Programs. Jim Creighton invited the various program administrators to offer links for the page already “up and running”. It ap-pears there is currently “space avail-able”. If too much information is posted on the existing site, additional cost might be incurred. But, that ap-pears unlikely at this time.

Kaye Fairer appointed Robert Mayes

“Directors’ Reports” with the club mem-bers (by way of Regional Newsletters and web pages).

Old Business –

Barry Hair (Alabama Region) was asked to assist the SEDiv in forming a “By-laws / Operations Manual Committee”. Barry Hair will be the Chairman of this committee. Amendments to the SEDiv By-Laws will likely be needed and there are certain modifications that need to be made in the Operations Manual as well. The committee will review the existing By-Laws/Operations Manual and present their suggested recommendations, altera-tions, and modifications.

Issues were discussed pertaining to the race registration computer system used by some racing regions. Specifically, the Atlanta Region has recently had difficul-ties obtaining “access codes” and “using the system”. The system’s administrator has been unwilling to work with several members of the Atlanta Region.

A motion was made by Martin Bartlett (CCR) to authorize the composition of a written document/letter to be addressed to the main operator of the online/data registration system (Jim Pennington) mentioned in the paragraph above. This system was jointly developed and per-fected using SEDiv funds. The letter will ask the “operator” to allow ALL SEDiv Regions to have “working” access to the system. This motion was seconded by Tere Pulliam (Atlanta Region). The mo-tion was unanimously approved by the REs.

Kaye Fairer announced that The Tennes-see Valley Region has re-paid the loan offered to them last year to help organize and conduct the first Crow Mountain Hillclimb in North Alabama.

A SEDiv Specialty Worker Award was discussed. Clyde Bales had prepared a handout for the RE’s. Clyde reviewed his plans and the specifics associated with the proposed award.

Martin Bartlett (CCR) made a motion to allocate funds, not to exceed $1500, to purchase awards and recognize workers as outlined within the handout offered by

they felt as though the current Board was receptive to their message.

On the personal side, we got to see Jon Kerfoot one last time before his perma-nent move to Oklahoma. Jon was in town to supervise the movers, and he brought his sister Holly to the meeting as well. Nice to meet you, Holly, and we’ll all miss you, Jon. Good luck! And speaking of luck, Boz Marchi announced that he had received his novice permit and was planning to get started in For-mula 500 this season. Good luck to you, Boz! And best wishes and all the luck we can bestow goes out to Brian Huff and Emily Boxley who announced their engagement. The date for their wedding is July 15, 2006. Congratulations to you both! And congratulations are also due to Sam Fouse, driver of GTL Mazda, who announced that he is celebrating his 30th year with the Club. Way to go, Sam! Bet you never planned to be with us so long, but that’s how memories are made.

Why don’t the rest of you plan to come out and join us next meeting of the Tri-angle Chapter, April 5th? Come hear what’s up, who’s winning and who’s losing, and who almost made it. Why let me relay the news to you when it’s more fun to experience it in person? See you there . . . or at the races!

reduce the number of required stewards at each event as had been done for cor-ner workers, and that perhaps that after twenty years of wrangling over sound control that it was time to scrap the national requirement and return it to being a purely regional issue. Not eve-ryone agreed, of course, but everyone seemed on board with the idea that some streamlining would be a good idea.

Assistant RE Rex Deffenbaugh and RE Mark Senior reported that they each had sought out separate discussions with several members of the national Board of Directors, including the new chairman, Robert Introne, at the recent National Convention. Their aim was to get a feel for where these folks were coming from and to present our views to them directly, so as to not put all the work on the shoulders of our own Di-rector, Kaye Fairer. Both Mark and Rex said that they had presented the view that BoD needs to make certain that it considers a wider cross-section of the membership when it makes deci-sions and that they should not act in haste but make certain that they heard not just one side of a position before voting on it. Our representatives said that while only time would tell whether this would come to pass, that at least

The March 1st meeting of the Triangle Chapter was rather lightly attended. Only about 25 of the faithful showed up at our favorite grub-and-gab spot, the El Rodeo restaurant in the Townridge shop-ping center in Raleigh. I suspect it had something to do with the fact that annual tech is this coming weekend, March 5, at Krause and England, and that the first event at VIR, March Madness, is a scant three weeks away. Both will have passed by the time you read this, so there was little time left for folks to prepare. It’s a good thing, too, since for the first time in the last few years, nobody brought any in-car racing video to share. After the upcoming SARRC and Double ECR, I’m sure we’ll have plenty.

In racing news, it was noted that the Na-tional race in August will have both a Carolina Cup and a Pro-IT race associ-ated with it, in an attempt to offset the considerable loss the region incurred on it last year, and that the Al Fairer Memo-rial SARRC-MARRS Challenge will run only the full course rather than the grand long course, for the same reason. There will also be a non-points, non-affiliated, restricted Regional held in conjunction with the Driver’s School at Rockingham in June, to help ensure that we don’t lose money on that. And the Board of Direc-tors is considering adding a Performance Driving Experience at Rockingham the weekend of July 22-23, now that the SCCA National Office has issued new, less restrictive, and much simpler guide-lines for such events. Sounds pretty ex-citing! That would be a great way for workers, soloists, and just plain folks who haven’t gotten over the bar to go racing to get started.

It was noted again that the racing pro-gram is in desperate need of a volunteer to run the Sound specialty and that the entire Southeast Division is in need of more Stewards. When the discussion turned to how to rectify these issues, one grumpy member opined that perhaps it was time for SCCA to realize that it had spawned these problems itself by having overly complex regulations. It was sug-gested that perhaps the time had come to

Free Entry to USRRC! The RoadRally Department is offering one heck of a deal to United States Road Rally competitors this year.

It’s so simple that if I wasn’t an SCCA Staff member I would jump on this, and I am one poor ralliest!

Each Region (yep, 111 of them) can au-thorize one USRRC Rally Team per Re-gion for a free Regional entry to this year’s championships in Kansas. There are some great driving roads here, and October is a beautiful time of the year. Don’t pass up this opportunity to partici-pate in our national championship event, the third jewel of the championship crown held in the grassroots motorsports capital of the world!

(Interested teams please contact the NCR Board of Directors for more information about the offer. -Ed.)

There isn’t any more to this than what I described above, but if you have ques-tions please feel free to contact Pego at [email protected] or at 800-770-2055, ext 360. Michael E. Dickerson Manager of Region Development

Driving Event to be held at Rocking-ham, July 29th and 30th. There will be three groups and at least one of them will contain unmodified street cars.

There will be an opportunities for the instructors to get on track themselves, so if you can instruct, please contact RE Mark Senior. Should be a hoot!

Also in the news, a TSD rally, the kind run over public roads with street-legal cars, is planned for the VIR area July 15th, so watch the web site for details. The region hasn’t had one of these in quite awhile, so it should be fun. For those who have never participated in one, think of it as a board game played with real cars, on a board consisting of public streets. It’s more mentally than physically challenging, as the partici-pants follow coded instructions, trying to stay on course and on time. As one of those present observed, “if you haven’t argued much with your spouse lately, doing a TSD rally together is a great way to get back in practice.”

Well, that about wraps it up. Why not plan on joining us next time, Wednes-day May 3rd at El Rodeo in Raleigh? See you there . . . or at the races!

We had a rockin’ good time at the April meeting of the Triangle Chapter. There was Runoffs® video from a few years back, and everyone enjoyed watching the tight racing and fierce competition as we ate. There was plenty of bench racing too, so much so that we got a late start on the actual meeting, as well as visits from some new members and welcome guests. We were visited by Anna Neave, our co-chief of Timing and Scoring, and by Tony Lee from the Houston area of Texas. Tony said he was working on a contract in RTP on business and was looking for a way to relax, so he looked us up and came on out. He joked that we were having way too much fun, and that he was going to report us to the national Office so they could put a stop to that. Welcome to you both!

We also welcomed Norbert Richter, who joined us from Phoenix, and has plans to run his mid-engined Corvair V8 in some solo events. And new member Jeff Roussel told us all he was ready to try everything the club had to offer, and was willing to volunteer as a crew member to someone who would train him. We made sure he talked to Flag Chief and volunteer coordinator Chuck Stanley as well as other racers. Welcome aboard, guys! And making his second repeat appearance was Lorne Long who told us that work on his GT1 car was proceeding and he hoped to be ready for the June Driver’s School and Restricted Regional at Rockingham, June 10th and 11th.

Plans have shaped up for that event. The Restricted Regional will be open to closed wheel cars with limited power; that is, no GT1 nor GTE for example, in consideration of the fact that all cars will be on track at the same time, and some of the drivers may well be first-time nov-ice permit holders. We still need more National Competition License holders (that’s “National drivers” as we call them) to act as instructors, so if you are interested, please contact RE Mark Sen-ior.

And we also need “National drivers” to act as instructors at the Performance

Rally in the Piedmont Saturday, July 15,2006

Rally in the Piedmont will be a TSD, Touring rally of about 80 miles that will start on US 58 near the Danville Re-gional Airport, and end at a Danville res-taurant for food, drink, conversation, scoring, and awards.

Touring rallies are Time Speed and Dis-tance (TSD) events to be sure, but they are not the events that test minute knowl-edge of the rules with instructions stated in several levels of logic. Rally in the Piedmont is written with instructions that are designed to keep you on course, and the contest will be accuracy in driv-ing and staying on time. Not a test of the stability of relationships, Rally in the Piedmont is designed to provide a blend of competition between driver/navigator

Karl Shultz posted the following in the SouthEast section of improvedtour-ing.com (and tracked me down to tell me in person!): -Scott Gallimore =========================== Was it just me, or was that possibly the most efficiently run race weekend I've ever been to? My goodness. We were in and out of tech and registration in under five min-utes. Everything basically ran on sched-ule, all the time, even with the occa-sional crash. People for the most part seemed to be racing really clean (apart from a few wreck Miatas that decided to bump draft me down the roller coaster ) Hats off to the NCR staff and all the racers who came out this past weekend. I really had a good time. --Karl in NC

Newsletter Editor - Due to additional responsibilities I’ve taken on, I am in desper-ate need of someone to take over the layout of the newsletter. I have been handling the gathering of materials, layout and printing of The Bulletin and it’s just simply gotten to be too much. I can still help with gathering material and, since I work in a print shop, the actual printing of the newsletter, but the layout is more time consum-ing than I can handle at the present time.

If you’re interested, I’m willing to train someone who’s willing to give the task the time necessary to do a good job. I use Microsoft Publisher for layout, but that’s just me. If someone is willing to take this over and wishes to use some other program, that’s fine. Whatever you’re comfortable with!

All I need for the printing is an Adobe Acrobat pdf file of the finished document. I can handle the printing and Scott Gallimore has been handling the actual mailing.

Anyone interested in taking over this responsibility, please contact Bruce Dover at (919) 423-6015 (cell) or (336) 364-8231 (hm.) or email at [email protected].

Drivers - National licensed drivers to instruct at the Driver School/Restricted Re-gional at Rockingham on June 10-11. Instructors will get a discount on the regional race, which will be a 45 minute race with a pit stop (driver change) based on the same format as the CCPS races. Any qualified drivers who are interested, please contact Mark Senior at (919) 662-7502 (home) or (919) 890-3826 (work) or at [email protected]

Sound Control - Our long-time Sound Control person, Tim Johnston, has retired from Sound Control and we need someone to replace him. This is a specialty which must be filled in order to put on a race, per the GCR, so it’s very important to get this vacancy filled. If you think you’d like to handle Sound Control for the Region or just try it and see how you like it, please contact Mark Senior at (919) 662-7502 (home) or (919) 890-3826 (work) or at [email protected] or, if you think maybe you could help out at the Al Fairer SARRC/MARRS Challenge com-ing up May 12-14, contact Race Chair Kaye Fairer (contact info on page 2).

Racing at “The Rock” On June 10-11, the North Carolina Re-gion returns to the North Carolina Motor Speedway at Rockingham, NC for our first race in many years (at least 8!). The event is a Driver School/Restricted Re-gional. The Restricted Regional will be a 45 minute race with a pit stop (driver change) based on the same format as the CCPS races. Students who complete the Driving School will be eligible to enter the race, which will be held on Sunday, providing they’ve completed their 2 school requirements. In addition, stu-dents will get a $75 discount on the race.

We still need qualified instructors (see HELP WANTED ad to the left) as well as workers to man the stations. So, come on out and help us make this “return to our roots” a success!

Season Opening UNCW Spring Fling Auto-X: What a way to start the new season! On Sunday March 5th, 59 entries thrilled a big spectator crowd under beautiful sunny skies. This was our 1st event with 6 total competition runs. The morning session started with 3 runs for each Group (A & B). We took a lunch break, then ran 3 more. All for 20 Bucks! Finish time was approx 3:45pm. A course design with more overlap will be a bit quicker. In the end, we had time for a few fun runs and packed up the equipment by 5PM.

New Procedures & Equipment used for 1st time: An Annual Tech process was initiated and will be a big help expediting events. Thankfully, we did not have to test the New Fire Extinguishers! Our Timing & Scoring Chief - Jeff Eng put together some nice stands and PVC LB’s to house our expensive AXWARE Transmitters & Receivers. The weatherproof enclosures will really help protect them when things get a bit wet.

Our next event is the April 15th Saturday TOP GUN Challenge! Write your check to Uncle Sam and come on out to Wilmington Industrial Park (now called Smith Creek Center). The event is on Saturday, so you can be with your family Easter Sunday. As usual, the grip levels will be challenging but the club will again be renting a parking lot blower. As indication of the popularity of our events, this one filled up with 60 entries in less than 5 days! At press time, we had 11 on the “Official Waiting” List.

A few additions to the 2006 schedule are now being considered. The best way to keep up is to attend one of our Chapter meetings. If you cannot, always stay tuned to www.ncrscca.com Thanks! Richard Franklin-Cape Fear Chapter Coordinator 2002 Honda S2000 “#11 A-Stock” Black/Red

The 2nd Annual Top Gun Challenge was a success!

A wide variety of cars joined us for our 2nd Annual Top Gun Challenge at Smith Creek Center/Wilmington Ind. Park. 59 competitors took to the starting line and enjoyed the longest and most challenging course designs ever set up at this site. Runs were averaging well over 52.+ seconds which allowed plenty of overlap between cars. Thanks to our dedicated event staff and their hard work, this Autocross ran very smoothly and we finished before 4PM.
