Local Business Offers Warm Welcome to Taylor Residents

With Bike Week in full swing several AL residents had ex-pressed to Wellness Director Tammy Levesque that they would like to “see the motorcycles.” Not wanting to disappoint and having the Taylor bus available she filled it up with folks and headed downtown. It was too quiet for their liking there, so off they headed down Rollercoaster Road to the Weirs.

Pulling into the Broken Spoke Saloon, they paused to admire the long lines of decked-out bikes. Apparently their interest was appreciated, and business owner Buddy, along with the lead singer of the band currently entertaining, boarded the bus just to say hello and pass out free Broken Spoke “koozies” to the group.

Thanks Tammy, for the fun ride, and thanks Broken Spoke, for the warm Bike Week Welcome!

Brendan Smith presents

Staff Spotlight

Tammy Smith

It was such a pleasure interviewing and getting to know Tammy Smith a little better.

Tammy Smith is the Cook Supervisor here at Taylor Community. You can often see her warm smile at Woodside as she prepares, cooks and serves the co-workers and residents she has come to consider ‘family.’

Tammy has worked at Taylor for 11 years. She started out as a dishwasher and dietary aide. Previously, she had sixteen years under her belt as a cook at a local long term care facility. She came to Taylor as the place she wanted to work and patiently worked and waited for appropriate openings as she worked her way up.

She says her biggest joys are her four grand-children –that she clearly adores. There is Arora,10; Braydon,4; Liam,3; and Camden who is one year old.

Her children include, Nicholas, who used to work here as a youngster and who will be getting married this July. Best wishes to him.

Another son, Brent, also works in culinary services at the Veterans Home—must be in the genes!

Tammy’s step-daughter just graduated from high school and will be heading off to Utica College in New York.

Tammy has shared the last 11 years with her husband, Kyle. Kyle—you may know—he is also a cook here at Taylor Community! Tammy says they are simply happy together, whatever they are doing.

When talking about work, she says that she comes to work because she loves coming to work and that she loves her co-workers and residents.

Tammy’s motto: “Wake up in the morning, take one day at a time and live life to the fullest!”

~ Susan Denopoulos

Did You Know?

On the Laconia campus, a closed-circuit TV station, “Touchtown,” (Channel 14.1 on newer digital flat-screen televisions, Channel 98 if you have an older model with a “DTA” box) posts current

activities and menus as well as other notices of general interest to residents. In addition to viewing Touchtown on your personal televisions, monitors are also located in the main lobby at Taylor Home, on the first floor of Ledgeview and in the lobby at Woodside.

Are you computer savvy? Taylor’s website (taylorcommunity.org) has a special new section just for residents. The bottom of the home page has a link titled “Resident’s Login” under “What’s Happening” where you type the password “taylor” (all lower case). TRIPS FLIER – JULY 2016 SIGN-UP MAY BEGIN FRIDAY, JUNE 24. Please call 366-1234.

NOTE: MANY OF THESE TRIPS HAVE SPECIFIC RESERVATION DEADLINES; PLEASE BE SURE TO MEET THEM WHERE REQUIRED.

There is a $10 fee charged for cancellations within 72 hours of the trip. Non–residents pay a $10 fee for going on Taylor Community trips.

The trips have descriptors – Easy, Moderate, and Independent – indicating the degree of mobility [walking, standing, stepping, etc.] required in order to safely participate and enjoy the trip. If a trip requires pre-paid tickets or entry fees, you cannot be reimbursed if you cancel from the trip OR if Taylor needs to cancel the trip due to weather conditions that make driving unsafe.

Please Note: All pick-up times are an approximation as circumstances may arise that could alter times by a few minutes.

Friday – July 1 – The Lakeport Freighthouse Museum and the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum with lunch at Fratello's [Moderate] A day of local history will begin with a tour of the Lakeport Freighthouse Museum which includes some wonderful Railroad and Lakeport (Lake City) history. We will then go across the street to lunch at our local Italian Restaurant, Fratello’s, which has an interesting history of it’s own having previously been an Indian Head Bank Branch location. After lunch the group will visit the Lake Winnipe-

saukee Museum where we will learn more about the history of Lake Winnipesaukee. There are no admission charges to either museum, but donations are always welcome. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia campus at 9:30 AM.

Thursday – July 7 – Winnipesaukee Playhouse – A Midsummer Night’s Dream with dinner at the Lakehouse Grille [Easy] Reservations needed no later than June 30. A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare is an enchantingly romantic comedy! When four crisscrossed lovers flee from their overbearing parents into an enchanted forest, they become unknowingly embroiled in the battle between the king of the fairies and his bride. Add to the mix a troupe of would-be actors, a mischievous

sprite, and an errant love potion, and you have the recipe for Shakespeare’s most-beloved comedy. Tickets $18 - $31. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia campus at 12:45 PM.

Thursday, July 14 – NH Music Festival – Brazilian Expressions [Easy] Reservations needed no later than June 30. Tropical nights, snakes slithering down trees, Carnival…this program captures the allure of Brazil. Miguel del Aguila is a Uruguayan-born American composer. His piece is a new concerto for cello, which is all about the Tango roots in Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. The Revueltas Colorines is a cool, brash piece of Mexican avant garde with folk music elements. Villa Lobos was the most prolific Brazilian composer with more than 2,000 works! His eighth Bachianas Brasileiras piece is well known—lyrical, noble, with a spirited ending. Tickets are $42.00. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus at 5:30 PM.

Wednesday – July 20 – Interlakes Theatre – The Producers [Easy] Reservations needed no later than July 13. Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks’ classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Pro-

ducers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly “boffo” hit, win-ning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all “little old ladies”) out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive “Springtime for Hitler”), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends. With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (Annie) and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks, The Producers skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender!” The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus at 12:45 PM.

Page 5

Thursday – July 21 – NH Music Festival – Composer Portraits [Easy] Reserva-tions needed no later than July 7. This Composer Portrait concert features the work of composer, conductor and multi-instrumentalist, David Amram. David started his professional life in music in the early 1950s playing French horn in the legendary jazz bands of Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. Appointed by Leonard Bernstein as the first Composer-in-Residence for the New York Philharmonic in 1966 (2016 is the 50th anniversary of his appointment), he also composed the

scores for the films Pull My Daisy, Splendor In The Grass and The Manchurian Candidate. He has collaborated as a musician with Thelonious Monk, Johnny Depp, Hunter S. Thompson, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guth-rie, Pete Seeger, Paquito D’Rivera, Tito Puente and many others. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus at 5:30 PM.

Friday – July 22 – Scenic Cruise on the M/S Mount Washington with lunch at Garwood’s in Wolfeboro [Moderate] Reservations needed no later than July 15. The MS Mount Washington is the flagship vessel of the Winnipe-saukee Flagship Corporation. Its home port is on Lake Winnipesaukee at The Weirs. The history of the MS Mount Washington dates back to 1872 when the original paddle steamer Mount Washington was launched from Alton Bay. Our group will debark in Wolfeboro where we enjoy lunch at Garwood’s on the shores of Winnipesaukee. We will then complete part two of our cruise back to The Weirs. Cruise tickets are $23 per person. The bus will be picking up residents on the Laconia Campus at 9:00 AM.

Wednesday – July 27 – Dining Out at The Manor on Golden Pond [Easy] Reserva-tions needed no later than July 19. This New England luxury resort began as a love story at the turn of the 20th century when a wealthy Englishman captured the heart of a beautiful debutante. In 1907 on Shepherd’s Hill, amid the tall sentinel pines, they built a magnificent country estate with sweeping vistas overlooking Squam Lake, of Golden Pond fame. The Manor’s 13-acre property, with sweeping panoramic views of the foothills of the White Mountains, has

been masterfully restored and is a proud member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. At the Manor, your Four Diamond fine dining experience will be enhanced by the beauty of the Van Horn room, an intimate setting with elegant décor, reminiscent of a fine English table. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus beginning at 5:00 PM.

Thursday – July 28 – NH Music Festival - Ein Deutsches Requiem [Easy] Reservations needed no later than July 14. Soprano Tami Petty made her Merkin Hall solo debut as the 2014 Winner of the Joy in Singing Award. She has also performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall with the American Symphony Orchestra and at Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic. Bass-baritone Paul Max Tipton enjoys an active career in opera, oratorio, and chamber music and has performed and recorded throughout North America.

He has recently appeared with the symphonies of San Antonio, Grand Rapids, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and has performed with the New York Philharmonic as part of their first-ever Bach Festival. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus beginning at 5:30 PM.

Friday – July 29 – Visit the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium and lunch at The Common Man [Moderate] The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center honors the memory of Alan Bartlett Shepard, the first American in space (1961) and Sharon Christa McAuliffe, one of the seven crew members of the Space Shuttle Challenger and the first teacher in space. Following the tour and planetarium show the group will lunch at The Common Man Restaurant in Concord. Admission is $14 and includes the planetarium show. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus at 9:00 AM.

Saturday – July 30 – Lakes Region Rotary Car Show at Faro Italian Grille [Independent] This car show is hosted by the Lakes Region Rotary to raise funds for local charities. Using proceeds from past shows they have awarded over $30,000 to Lakes Region Area charities. The featured charities this year are the Belknap House and the Greater Lakes Child Advocacy Center. The bus will begin picking up residents on the Laconia Campus at 9:30 AM.
