ST. MARY’S PARTNERSHIP MEETING: 4 WAY TEST

Stan Cichon (Past Principal of St. Mary’s and Chair of the St. Mary’s Part-nership Committee) recognized the Ro-tarians who gave of their time last Wednesday in judging the 4-Way Test speeches at St. Mary’s: Joe Connelly, Dorothea Schaab, Terry Allen, Dave Tod and Kathy Demorest.

He then called upon Mr. Luigi Fortini, Principal of St. Mary’s for a few words.

Judges’ Decisions: Stan Cichon reported that although the judges selected the three finalists last Wednesday they did not advise the three students of their placement. All three finalists are IB students and the placements are:

1st Place: John Rawlek 2nd Place: Selam Abraham 3rd Place: Nimat Ajeigbe;

Harry Pelton thanked all of the speakers today. He recalled being a new Rotarian and being asked if he would help out with some youth pro-grams with St. Mary’s School. He wan-dered into Stan Cichon’s office (Stan was the Principal of St. Mary’s at that time) and together they forged a plan and a partnership which successfully continues today. Every year we hear from the students and it is exciting to hear such talent. Thanks to the stu-dents and the partnership.

Director Dorothea Schaab was the Chair for today’s meeting of May 9th 2019. Dorothea explained that the focus of the meeting was on the St. Mary’s 4-Way Test speech competition and invited the assembly to join her in repeating the 4-Way Test:

She then invited us to join Lisa Fernandes in the singing of O Canada, followed by Rotary Grace.

Head Table: John Rawlek (St. Mary’s Student), Adela Czyzewska (St. Mary’s Speech Coach), Louise Vant Erve (St. Mary’s Counsellor and Inter-act Coordinator), Luigi Fortini (St. Mary’s Principal), Stan Cichon (Chair, St. Mary’s Partnership) and Dorothea Schaab (Director: Youth Services)

Bulletin Editor: Carol Graham Photographer: John Shield

Visitors and Guests: Lynn Topp introduced our Guests today

50/50 Draw: Bill Sumner asked Principal Luigi Fontini to draw the winning ticket for $160.00. Janet Matthews was the lucky winner. Congratulations Janet!

Stay in School Luncheon: Bill Sumner reminded us of this lunch-eon on May 23rd at the Carriage House. We will be introduced to the four newly selected Scholarship winners that day. Thanks to Shellie Marshall and her selection committee. Please register online or contact Hugh Delaney.

Invermere Rotary Fellowship Weekend: May 31-June 2: Mark Ambrose asked those who were interested in attending to Register ASAP. There will be a Friday night social, tee times for both Saturday and Sunday and a banquet on Saturday evening, all located at Copperpoint. Rotary rates will be in place for both golf and staying at Copper-point.

Social Committee: Wine Club and President’s World Fest: Christine Kyte announced the next Wine and Spirit Meeting will be May 31st at Gena Rotstein’s house; George Deegan advised that the President’s World Fest is taking place on Friday May 24th at the Acadia Rec. Centre. It is from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm and the cost is $40 per ticket or $80 per ticket and you get a free ticket! The entertainment will be dueling pianos and a shooting display with the Darrell’s. Here is the link to Register: http://portal.clubrunner.ca/952/Event/2019-

president-s-world-fest

Dream Home: Jim Bladon reminded us that we are three weeks away from the “Go Live” Rostering date of May 30th. Jim urged us to register for the training of the new ticket-less technology by going to [email protected] and signing up. So far 80 people have signed up and space is limited on any particular day.

Sergeant at Arms: Jim Fitzowich was able to extract some money from the 50/50 winner Janet Matthew before he was rudely interrupted by loud music. He had hoped to have a trivia quiz on St. Mary’s but alas, he was only able to fine “in absentia” who-ever caused the music to override his presentation and also whoever tried but failed to stop the racket.

You were “grace under pressure” Jim.

Calgary Rotary Club Foundation (CRCF): Sherry Austin made a very spe-cial presentation today for three Rotarians who have achieved “Major Donor” status in the CRCF which requires a six figure donation. Norm Devitt crafted the three trophies and did the honours by handing them out.

The three major donors did not want a big ceremony so Sherry simply asked the three to come forward to-gether and receive their trophies and our thanks. The three donors are Glen Richardson, Greg Martin and Bob Brawn. They have provided the foundation for CRCF and have helped so many people in need. The Assembly acknowledged our gratitude for their continuing generosity with a standing ovation.

Shelter Box Award: Dorothea Schaab asked President Ron to come forward and receive the Bronze Award from Shelterbox to our Club for its contributions.

Dorothea adjourned the meeting with two reminders:

Next week’s meeting will honour Art Borzel

This Sunday remember to honour the Mothers in your life.

On May 7th we had another very successful meal preparation at Ronald McDonald House. Dinner was chicken, mixed vegetables & mashed potatoes with Fruit cobbler and ice cream for dessert. There are 27 rooms at Ronald McDonald House and it is al-ways full. A couple were checking in and the lady was very preg-nant. They were amazed at the fa-cility. They had no idea such a thing existed. There are 17 Ronald McDonald Houses in Canada. One is under construction in Medicine Hat.

Ronald McDonald Houses exist in many countries around the world. Thanks to everyone that helped out. Who knew that Jim Gor-man could peel and mash potatoes. Your club purchased the food. We served approxi-mately 40 meals at a cost of $250.00.

Thanks again for helping with such an important cause. We will schedule a couple of din-ners for the fall.

The Bulletin of The Rotary Club of Calgary South DISCON 2019 - Building Comm-Unity Conference

At the Celebration of Life for deceased members I was honoured to represent our Club to recognize 6 who have left us. The Ceremony was different and thoughtful in that the Committee brought out six large potted trees upon which we hooked the names of the departed. These trees will be planted around Olds in Memory of Passing Rotarians. I thought it was very well done despite the fact that a technology malfunction resulted in a lack of music. Liisa Lehtio was in attendance as well as Dor-othea Schaab, Luanne Whitmarsh, Kathy Demorest and myself, Bryan Walton. Regrettably our Club didn’t receive any of the Dis-trict Awards but did get a Bronze Award for Shel-terBox which Dorothea Schaab accepted on behalf of our club. Dan’s team did a great job connecting with the Community and I would encourage our Members to see how this was done. A lot of fun was had at the Rodeo and Concert. Submitted by: Bryan Walton
