An International Collaboration to Tackle Global Issues

What is Challenge 20/20?

- We work with two other schools

- We tackle one of the 20 real global problems over 4 months

- We work on a service learning project, connecting our research and goals to the larger community

- Submit all our research and findings via an online report to NAIS

What is Service Learning? Service:

Service means contributing or helping to benefit others and the common good

Learning:

Learning means gaining understanding of a subject or skill through study, instruction, or experience

Service Learning:

The ideas of service and learning combine to create service learning. Investigation, preparation, action, reflection, and demonstration are five stages of service learning. By understanding how each stage works, you can be more effective in making plans to help in your community.

Stage 1 - Investigation

What will you investigate?

You’ll investigate the impact we have on water in Southern California (and globally). We will also investigate ways to reduce, reuse, recycle, and sustain water in the region (and beyond).

Right now: create a inventory of your unique skills and talents.

Photography? Writing? Art? Sports? Are you a behind- the-scenes organizer, or do you prefer to be on stage? (Use a post-it and keep it handy – you’ll be using it to remind yourself of your skills!)

Stage 2 - Preparation

How will you prepare?

Southern California is in a drought that is affecting our community. We need to investigate this problem and decide on ways to use less water in our school and beyond.

- Water audit (brainstorm all of the ways we use water on campus)

- Can we obtain a water bill from the school? Who should we talk to gather information about water usage?

- What speakers can we invite to help us understand more about water conservation?

- Gather information about climate change (using guided research tool)

Stage 3 - Action

We will continue investigating issues surrounding water sustainability over the next several weeks. Meanwhile, we will be taking our knowledge and creating and carrying out action plans.

1. Direct Service: this action involves face-to-face interactions with people

2. Indirect Service: this action is not seen by people who may benefit from it, but it meets a real need

3. Advocacy: this action surrounds you making others aware of the issue and encourages them to take action to change a situation

4. Research: this action requires you to gather and report on information that help a community

Stage 4 - Reflection

As we progress, we will reflect on what we are learning regarding water sustainability, and where we fit into the work.

Stage 5 - Demonstration

You will present your findings to the schools in Indiana and Hong Kong, as well as the larger NAIS community. You will also be presenting your research and action to the 6th grade classes.

1. Form expert groups with other students who also read your topic.

2. Discuss your findings and how to best explain your area to your home group.

3. Be prepared to teach the class about your chosen topic (3-5 min). Find an innovative way to present your information.

Find videos/images/songs – all that might help illustrate the topic you’ve chosen to deeply research

Make concrete comparisons to the Buckley community, Southern California, and the larger world

Find two relevant outside articles about your expert topic

4. Keep in mind that the whole class will be taking a quiz based on the information presented.

Create a public service announcement video using at least 3 facts from each effect: Health, Hunger, Poverty, and Education.

Everyone must participate in video

Write a script before hand to help organize thoughts

PSA must be 3-4 minutes in length

Be creative and mature when addressing serious issues influencing other human beings

Be careful with humor – use it wisely

Include music

These will be uploaded onto our collaboration site.

Get into your groups. Each group should have an expert on health, poverty, education and hunger.

3 things to include in your PSA:

Important facts (verbal or written)

Pictures that show the situation according to your expert topic

An appropriate soundtrack

THE WATER CHALLENGE

It's a simple trade.

1. Give up one expense for two weeks.

2. Donate what you save ($0 out of pocket).

3. Drink water to give water.

Drinking only water for two weeks can free up at least enough cash to give one person access to water.
