Kristen Panzetta - Orchestra

Acclaimed music educator Kristen Panzetta currently teaches in Central New York’s Jamesville-Dewitt school district, where she conducts student orchestras in both middle and elementary schools. Panzetta is no stranger to the guest conductor baton, having led a variety of All County orchestras in her home county of Onondaga, as well as in Oswego, Nassau, Broome and Monroe counties. In addition, she is a recipient of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra’s Outstanding Music Educator award.

Before accepting a position with Jamesville-Dewitt, Panzetta taught 26 years in the West Genesee school district. Panzetta is a graduate of Crane School of Music and State University of New York at Oswego and a violinist with Rosewood String Quartet.

Panzetta is an avid runner and recently completed her first two marathons. She lives in Liverpool with her husband and five children.

Fitzroy Stewart - Chorus

Fitzroy Stewart was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up in New York City, where he attended the High School of Music and Art. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Ithaca College, and taught in the Vestal (1965-1970) and Maine-Endwell (1971-1975 and 1988-2006) school systems.

While studying at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he also conducted the Collegiate Chorale (1976-1977), he was awarded a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship to study conducting with the Bach Scholar, Helmuth Rilling, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. At the Hochschule für Musik und Dartsellende Künst in Frankfurt, he was given a scholarship, for conducting, through the Franz-Grothe-Stiftung, completing a performance degree Künstlerische Reifeprüfung (Artistic Diploma) in Conducting with, the highest honors given at the Hochshule. In 1982, he founded Das neue Oberurseler Kammerorchester, which he directed for five years.

From 1987 to 1994, he was the music director/conductor of the Binghamton Community Orchestra, and in 1988, accepted a similar position with the Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, formerly the Corning Philharmonic Youth Orchestra . . . a position he held for eighteen years.

In the fall of 1996, Mr. Stewart was named to Who’s Who Among American Teachers. During the spring semester 2002, he held the position of Lecturer at the State University of New York at Binghamton (BU) in charge of Orchestral Activities. In 2003, the Madrigal Choir at Maine-Endwell High School was invited to the Festival of Gold in New York City, where they performed at the Riverside Church.

In the fall of 2006, Mr. Stewart and his wife, Ghislaine Kubica Stewart, founded the Basically Bach Ensemble, with the mission of presenting two concerts of sacred music per season, with J. S. Bach’s music and inspired biblical texts as its main focus. The Stewarts reside in Endwell, NY.

Martin Zavadil - Band

Martin Zavadil is a retired teacher from the Shenendehowa Central School District where he was the Director of Bands at the West High School. His teaching career spaned 37 years of public school Instrumental Music Education Elementary through High School. He received his undergraduate degree at SUNY Fredonia and has done extensive graduate work at the Lake Placid Institute, Saratoga-Potsdam Institute, Ithaca College, Long Island University, Marywood College, and the University of Minnesota.His conducting mentors include: Col. Arnald Gabriel, Frederick Fennell, William Revelli, and Rodney Winthers. Mr Zavadil is a NYSSMA All-State and Major Organization adjudicator, has served on the Executive Board of the New York State Field Band Conference, is a past member of the All-State Selection Committee and has conducted several All-County and Area All-State Festivals. He is an active performer in the Capital District and has studied trumpet with Edward Carroll, international trumpet soloist and Director of the Lake Placid Institute and Trumpet Professor at CALARTS. Currently, Mr. Zavadil is the conductor of the Schoharie Valley Concert Band, is a member of the New York State Band Director’s Association, National Band Association, American Concert Bands, International Trumpet Guild, and the Saratoga Musicians Union. Mr. Zavadil has also been Conductor of the Shenendehowa Musical Company Orchestra for 19 musical shows, and has conducted both the Saratoga Springs Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. Mr. Zavadil is Principal Trumpet of the Williamsburg Consort. Other activities include church choir, handbell choir, curling, golf, kayaking and gardening.

Mr. Zavadil resides with his wife in Ballston Spa, New York.

Mr. Zavadil was Director of Bands at Susquehanna Valley High School between 1977-1987.

Jeffrey Brunner - Chorus

Jeffrey Brunner became director of the choirs at Boyertown Area Senior High in the Boyertown Area School District in 2014.  Mr. Brunner has spent almost 10 years in the Boyertown Area School District teaching music K-12.  He spent six years teaching at Earl and Pine Forge Elementary Schools and 3 years as choral director at Boyertown Junior High West.  During his tenure at Boyertown, he has taught a variety of classes including K-8 general music, piano classes, AP Music Theory, and directed a number of musical productions, as well as 10 different concert and select choirs.  Mr. Brunner joined the staff of Berks Youth Chorus (formerly Berks Classical Children's Chorus) in May 2008, when he was appointed Director of Choristers. Since June 2009, he and fellow directors have organized and directed Summer Sing I, an annual, five-day summer camp in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania, open at no charge to any student in grades three through five who possesses a love for singing. In June 2014, he led Summer Sing II for Berks County middle school singers in grades six through eight.  Under his direction, the Choristers were selected to perform at the 2013 ACDA-PA Fall Conference.

Mr. Brunner earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, cum laude, from Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, and earned a Master of Art in Music Education from Teacher’s College at Columbia University in New York City. He has studied conducting with Peggy Dettwiler at Mansfield University, William Weinert at the Eastman School of Music, Vance George of the San Francisco Symphony Choir at Westminster Choir College, and Rodney Eichenberger through George Fox University. He has studied voice with Dorothy Stone in New York City and Tammy Black in Bally, Pennsylvania. Mr. Brunner is an active member of PMEA and ACDA for which he has presented numerous repertoire sessions, and a session at the 2014 PMEA In-service Convention entitled, “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun.”  As of 2013, he holds a two-year term on the ACDA-PA executive board as Repertoire and Standards Chair for Youth and Community Children’s Choir. He has been a guest conductor of over a dozen high school, middle school, and elementary honor choirs across Pennsylvania and New York. 

Denise Lacey-Corcoran - Band

Denise Lacey-Corcoran is currently the director of the Vestal Middle School Seventh and Eighth Grade Band and Beginning Band.  Mrs. Lacey-Corcoran graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College, with a major in Music Education and a minor in Public Relations and Advertising.  She went on to complete her Master of Music degree in Music Education at Syracuse University.  Mrs. Lacey-Corcoran studied classical saxophone with Dr. Steven Mauk, Dr. Ronald Caravan, and April Lucas.  Mrs. Lacey-Corcoran has performed with the Binghamton Philharmonic, in the pit orchestras for numerous community theatre and church productions, and has performed for various events from California to New Jersey. She has also recorded for Victor Entertainment, Inc.

Mrs. Lacey-Corcoran is a proponent of incorporating history and literacy into rehearsals, to help students fully understand the music that they are learning.  She has been published in IN Transition, the Journal of the New York State Middle School Association. 

Mrs. Lacey-Corcoran resides in Upstate New York with her husband Jeremy, daughter Lydia, and their 2 dogs, Dizzy and Sophie.  

Nancy Pettersen Strelau - Orchestra

Before coming to Rochester in 1986, Nancy Pettersen Strelau was a violinist with the Florida Philharmonic and Assistant Conductor of the Miami Youth Orchestra. She was Director of Orchestras and String Coordinator for the Penfield Central School District (NY) from 1986 to 2000, Conductor of the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 2005, Co-Conductor of the Brighton Symphony Orchestra from 1990 -1994 and was a contract sub with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 1986 to 1997. Mrs. Strelau was also founder and director of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra from 1992 to 2012. Currently she is Music Director and Conductor of the Nazareth College Symphony Orchestra, Nazareth College Chamber Orchestra, Hochstein Virtuosi Scholarship Chamber Orchestra and the Greater Rochester Women's Philharmonic. Mrs. Strelau is Coordinator of the String Area and Auditions Coordinator for the Nazareth College Department of Music and teaches applied conducting, composition and string pedagogy. Mrs. Strelau is President of the New York chapter of American String Teachers Association (NYASTA).

Over the years Mrs. Strelau has been the recipient awards including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Musicians Award for Outstanding Music Educator in String Education, Hochstein Music School Faculty Service Award and Richard Snook Memorial Award from the Monroe County School Music Association. Mrs. Strelau has received music degrees from Syracuse University and the University of Miami (Florida) and has taught in public, private and laboratory schools in Idaho, Utah, North Dakota and Florida.

Mrs. Strelau conducted the Juilliard School of Music Graduate Orchestra in the 1987 world premiere of 'Our Boys' by Cleophas Adderley, the first Bahamian Opera written. She has several orchestral and choral pieces published with Warner Brothers and Southern Music Company. Among noted works is a double bass concerto commissioned by RPO bassist Deborah Dunham. Her Fanfare entitled '325-7760' (melody based on the phone number and busy signal (!) for the ticket office) was featured at the opening ceremonies of the 1995 Ryder Cup International Golf Tournament by the Eastman Wind Ensemble under the baton of Donald Hunsberger. 'Four Miniatures,' a string orchestral suite by Mrs. Strelau is among her more popular works and has been performed by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. She has been the recipient of several 'Meet the Composer' grants. Mrs. Strelau made her third appearance at Carnegie Hall in 2002 conducting the premiere of her piece for full symphonic orchestra L'enfant du Soldat. She is currently writing a piece for the Brighton School District high school symphony orchestra and district string players.

Mrs. Strelau is a frequent guest conductor of high school orchestra festivals, all-county and all-state orchestras, as well as guest conductor at local and national music conferences.

Mrs. Strelau is an avid rower and lives in Penfield, New York with husband, luthier and double bassist Paul, and their daughter, Hadley.

Joe Carello - Jazz Ensemble

Saxophonist Joe Carello is a Syracuse native and has performed with Symphoria and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra on many occasions. He has been a featured soloist in concerts with Diane Schurr, Maureen Mcgovern, and Jeff Tyzik to name a few. Joe was also a member of the Syracuse Symphony Rock Ensemble-a group started by Calvin Custer in the 1970’s. As lead alto saxophonist with the Central New York Jazz Orchestra he has performed with Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, Joe Lovano, Bob Mintzer, Grady Tate and others. As a sideman Joe has worked with Chuck and Gap Mangione, Harry Connick Jr., Natalie Cole, Barry Manilow, and Frank Sinatra Jr. He has recorded with Danny D’Imperio, Eric Alexander, Barry Harris, Nancy Kelly, Ralph Lalama, and more. In addition to his performing career, Joe is a teacher at Onondaga Community College and Lemoyne College and co-director of The Band Bus School Music Service.

Alexandria Hanessian - Band

Alexandria Hanessian is currently in her ninth year as the director of concert and jazz bands at Spencer – Van Etten Middle School where she has also directed several middle school plays and musicals and is Musical Director for high school productions (including Crazy for You, Beauty and the Beast, The Music Man, and Seussical). As an active leader in her school and community, Ms. Hanessian recently finished tenure as President of her county music educators association and has hosted student teachers from Ithaca College in the past four years. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, New York State Band Directors Association, and New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA). Passionate about building success in small school districts, she and her colleagues presented a workshop entitled “Big Things Happen in Small Schools” at the NYSSMA Conference in 2010, and again at the collegiate NAfME Conference at Nazareth College in 2012. In December of 2013, Ms. Hanessian participated in a panel discussion at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago about her experiences teaching in a rural school district. Since beginning at Spencer – Van Etten, the instrumental program has grown by thirty-five percent and there are now active drama and jazz programs at the middle school level. Ms. Hanessian holds a BM in Clarinet Performance and Education and an MM in Music Education from Ithaca College and is a sought-after performer and a private teacher in the Ithaca/Binghamton area.

Anthony J. Pinelli, Jr. - Orchestra

Anthony has been a public school music educator for the past 25 years and is currently the orchestra director at Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, New York. He earned his Bachelor’s of Music in Education at Ithaca College and his Masters Degree from Stony Brook University. Anthony has directed the Sinfonia Youth Orchestra and the Cameratta Sinfonietta. He is an active guest conductor throughout New York State. Anthony is a frequent clinician and presenter at Music Education Conferences. He has served as the NYSSMA Winter Conference String Chair and as the President of the New York Chapter of the American String Teachers Association. Anthony also serves as the Double Bass Teacher at the Ithaca College Summer Music Academy High School and Middle School Divisions. He is a member of National Association of Music Educators, New York State School Music Association, American String Teachers Association, Long Island String Festival and Nassau Music Educator Association. Anthony performs frequently in the Tri-State region as a freelance bassist in both Jazz and Classical ensembles. He would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of his teachers from years past that have helped him along the way.

Derrick Fox - Chorus

Dr. Derrick Fox is an assistant professor of choral music education and choral conducting in the Ithaca College School of Music. He conducts the Ithaca College Chorus, the Ithaca College Madrigal ensemble and teaches choral conducting and choral rehearsal techniques.

He is an active adjudicator and clinician for regional and state choirs from the middle/junior high school to the collegiate level. He has worked with ensembles and presented sessions in Arkansas, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri, West Virginia, Texas, New York, Florida and Michigan. Dr. Fox is active presenter with engagements that include the Michigan School Vocal Music Association’s Choral Adjudication Workshop, the Arkansas Choral Directors Association Convention, the Missouri Choral Directors Association Summer Convention, Florida Music Educators Association Convention, Iowa Choral Directors Association, the Texas Choral Director’s Association Convention, the Kansas Music Educators Association and the West Virginia Music Educators Association, New York Choral Directors Association, Iowa-Summer Choral Symposium and the NYACDA Summer Convention.

As a soloist, Dr. Fox has collaborated with various organizations; among them are the Arkansas Symphony, Lansing Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Columbia Chorale, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Missouri, Michigan State University and the Espaço Cultural (Brasilia, Brazil). He can be heard singing selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess on the compact disc In This Hid Clearing, available on the Naxos Classical Music label. His debut with the St. Louis Symphony in their performance of Meredith Monk’s Night, for eight solo voices and orchestra.

A native Arkansan, Dr. Fox taught choral music at MacArthur Junior High School in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and at Parkway North High School and Maryville University, in Saint Louis, Missouri. He holds degrees from Arkansas State University (B.M.E.), the University of Missouri – Columbia (M.M.) and Michigan State University (D.M.A.), where he was awarded the prestigious University Enrichment Graduate Fellowship Award. Dr. Fox’s research interests and professional session presentations focus on assessment in the choral classroom, building classroom community, rehearsal strategies, South African choral music and shape note singing in the African American community. He studied conducting Dr. Tom O’Neal, Dr. R Paul Crabb, Dr. David Rayl, Dr. Jonathan Reed and Dr. Sandra Snow. He currently serves as the Multicultural and Ethnic Perspectives Repertoire & Standards chair for the New York chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.

Dr. Fox’s upcoming conducting engagements include the Arkansas ACDA Treble honor choir, West Virginia All - State MS/JH Honor choir, St. Louis All Suburban 9-10 honor choir, NYSCAME/SCMEA All County Women's choir (NY), BCMEA All County High School Mixed honor choir (NY), DCMEA Jr. High All-County choir (NY), Blair County Junior High Choir (PA),  2016 Tennessee All-State Treble Honor choir and the 2017 Arkansas All-State Mens Choir. Dr. Fox is ecstatic to be chosen as a presenter for the 2015 American Choral Directors Association National Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.
