Little is known about the backgroundo this colorul reormer o Israel. Called oGod rom the rugged mountains o Gilead,he walked into the palace o King Ahabwhile apostasy was at its darkest point.Fired by a holy indignation, he conront-

ed the wicked ruler o Israel with wordso judgment. Tere shall not be dew norrain these years, but according to my word(1 Kings 17:1).

the courageous prophet was commandedby God to hide himsel in the eastern wil-derness by the brook Cherith. Tere Godarranged providentially or ravens to de-liver ood to the isolated ugitive during thepredicted years o amine.

As the land baked and cracked underthe withering heat o the sun, every greenplant died or lack o water. But Elijah was

well supplied, morning and evening, by themiraculous ministry o the ravens. In ad-dition to the bread and esh brought bythe birds, God provided plenty o reresh-ing water rom the splashing brook thatowed nearby.

What a perect picture o Gods powerand willingness to care or the physicalneeds o His aithul servant! With plea-

sure we contemplate that scene o restulabundance. Te prophet had no problems.Everywhere else the people were sueringrom the terror o the drought, but God

anything. Without ail, the ravens ew intwice a day with their are o ood and thebrook was always yielding its lie-givingsupply o water.

Havent we seen the same kind o provi-dence in our own day? Te God o Elijahstill takes care o the needs o His children.Te prophet was walking in the center oGods will, and the promised blessings nev-

er ailed. Or did they?Lets read on in the biblical account:

And the ravens brought him bread andesh in the morning, and bread and eshin the evening; and he drank o the brook.And it came to pass aer a while, that thebrook dried up (1 Kings 17:6, 7).

Cant you picture the shock and disap-pointment as Elijah walked out to the brook

to get his daily water supply? He lookeddown upon the dry, brown stones o thebrook-bed and could scarcely believe whathe saw. Not a drop o water remained. A

BROOK HAD DRIED UP!We have no way o knowing how long

God tested His prophet by the barrenbrook. For a time, at least, Elijah had towait in aith. It probably seemed that all thepromises were ailing. God had abandonedhim to an agonizing death in the parchedwilderness. But as he lingered and listened,God spoke these words, Arise, get thee

to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon,and dwell there: behold, I have command-ed a widow woman there to sustain thee(1 Kings 17:9).

Dont you see how God closed onedoor so that He could open another one?Elijah had been there long enough. Godhad another experience waiting or himin Zarephath. God provided the brook,

and God dried it up. It would have been atragedy or the prophet to remain longer inthe wilderness. Lie was moving on. In thedynamics o divine Providence, Elijah was

scheduled to experience another miracle in

another place. Had the brook not dried up,he would have stayed there. He would haverelaxed in the satisying ullness o mate-rial blessing. But he would have missed thewidows cruse, the Carmel experience, andElisha plowing in the eld.

Listen, Gods brooks always dry up. Hedoesnt want us to stay in the same place allthe time. Tat is our great problem. We get

by our comortable brook, surrounded bypeaceul plenty, and want to rest there theremainder o our days. Ten when God al-lows the brook to dry up, we oen weep andblame God or aicting us.

Let me ask you, was Elijah backslid-ing when the brook dried up on him? No,he was growing spiritually. Zarephath wasmany times more wonderul than Cherith.

But please take note that God closed upCherith beore He revealed Zarephath.Faith had to be tested. Tere is always thetime when everything looks absolutely

hopeless. It happened with Elijah and it will

happen to us.

Te Eternal Why?

A

lmost daily I stand with people besidetheir dried-up brooks trying to help

them see that the world has not come toan end. One o the hardest questions or aminister to answer is Why? Why did mybaby die? Why did I lose my job? Why are

my children so unconcerned about spiritu-al things? Why did my companion abandonme or another?

Under the emotional stress o our losswe tend to blame God or making some ter-rible mistakes in dealing with our lives. Itis so human to do this because we have noway o seeing the uture.

I can still remember weeping, as a child,

when I read the story o Joseph or the rsttime. He had been so happy and careree.Ten, suddenly, his brook dried up. He was onthe way to Egypt as a slave. How Jacob grieved

or that lost boy! We can hear him moaning,

Joseph is gone, Simeon is gone, and now youwant to take Benjamin away, too. Everythingis against me (Genesis :6 NCV).

How amiliar it sounds. Poor Jacobcouldnt see through the whys any morethan we can. But a little while later we seehim on his camel, hurrying toward Egypt.His heart was overowing with joy. Anotherbrook had broken orth in his lie. And then

we hear Joseph saying to his brothers, Yethought evil against me; but God meant itunto good (Genesis 0:0).

It is so easy to look back as Joseph didthat day and coness that the disappoint-ments have really been His appointments.Why cant we have the aith to stand by ourdried-up brooks and make that conession?Someday in the uture every redeemed soul

will do it in retrospect. God delights in thosewho will take Him at His word and claimthe promise o Romans 8:8 even while theheart is breaking with sorrow. All things

Te Fires o Afiction

he Bible is laced with texts about thespiritual benets o suering. Peter

said to think it not strange concerning theery trial which is to try you, as thoughsome strange thing happened unto you

(1 Peter :1). Paul assures us that all thatwill live godly in Christ Jesus shall suerpersecution ( imothy :1). And Jamesmakes the incredible statement, Count itall joy when ye all into divers temptations;Knowing this, that the trying o your aithworketh patience (James 1:, ).

In the light o these and many moresimilar statements, we must coness that

there are mysterious blessings associatedwith trials and suering. James indicatesthat they develop the very character traitsthat mark those who will be candidates or

the kingdom. In Revelation the saints are

described in these words: Here is the pa-tience o the saints: here are they that keepthe commandments o God, and the aith oJesus (Revelation 1:1).

Obviously, patience is a requirement orthose who are redeemed out o this world.James says that patience is developed bytests and trials. Tis clearly teaches us thatsuering may indeed be a necessary mold-

ing process in our preparation or heaven.David, who also suered much, came to

this amazing conclusion: It is good or methat I have been aicted; that I might learnthy statutes (Psalm 119:71). Again, hewrote, Beore I was aicted I went astray(Psalm 119:67).

Until a Christian learns this simpleBible principle, he will live in a erment o

doubt and uncertainty. Every experienceo disappointment will raise resh ques-tions concerning Gods justice and love.Many Christians hold the childish view that

cause He loves us, thereore, He will use Hismighty power to preserve us rom everypain and trial.

Te inspired record reveals that becauseHe loves us, He will oen permit us to passthrough the res o aiction. Why does Hedo it? Because He sees that this is the onlyway to prepare us to be with Him or eterni-ty. God is actually answering the prayers o

those who have asked or purication o lie.When we pray or God to eradicate sin romour lie, we must be ready to accept His or-dained method o accomplishing that work.Grinding trials appear to be part o the ma-chinery by which sanctication is eected.

It is very likely that more Christianshave lost their aith over this issue than anyother. Every pastor has watched and prayed

with his suering people as they struggledwith the why o their dried-up brook.

Not even the most consecrated Christiancan be insulated rom shock and grie when

loved ones are taken by death. But they can

be prepared ahead o time so that their aithwill not give way under the stress o loss.

Te secret is to rest upon the assurancethat God will not permit any circumstancethat is not or our best good. Tis requiresaith, but it is not difcult to trust the Onewho died or us. We must keep on remind-ing ourselves that God will allow manysituations which will seem to us like ter-

rible tragedies. We will not be able to dis-cern any logic or reason behind the events.Our human aculties may rebel at the verythought that any good could ever resultrom such circumstances.

Here is where we must cling to the Wordo God and nothing else. Tis is the divid-ing place between the mature and immatureChristian. Te loss will either drive us clos-

er to Jesus, or cause us to turn rom Him.At this point, everything depends upon thepersonal relationship that has been devel-oped prior to the crisis. Tose who have

understood and accepted the principle that

Gods love will not allow any trial that is notor our best goodonly they will be able torelate properly to the experience.

Reasons or rusting

We have said that aith alone will holdus in this kind o traumatic test.Nevertheless, our aith is not blind or un-reasonable. We have a abulous reservoir o

experiences with God that prove His un-ailing love and concern or us. Why shouldthis one be any dierent? Even though Icant understand it, I can trust Him whohas promised. I His Word has never ailedbeore, how could it ail in this situation?Ten, like Job, we can say, Tough he slayme, yet will I trust in him (Job 1:1).

Here we may learn a lesson rom the

trustul manner in which parents surrendertheir children into the hands o a surgeon.How can they submit that beloved child tothe cutting o that knie and the throbbing

make it easy or them to place such con-dence in the doctor. Tey trust his skill andability to operate successully, and they haveaith in his wisdom to do the right thing atthe right time or the good o their child.Tey also know that aer the temporarysuering is past that the child will be bettero than it was beore the pain.

I we can trust a human physician who

oen ails, why is it so hard to trust a divineOne who never ails? Probably none o ourchildren would ever choose to be operatedon, no matter how serious the condition. Itis only because o our greater knowledge otheir case that we submit them to the sur-gery. In the same manner, we would neverchoose to experience the trials and aic-tions that our heavenly Father oen allows

to come upon us. He understands the casecompletely and knows that aer the pass-ing pain we will be better prepared or ahappier uture.

And here is a beautiul parallel in that

illustration: Even though I know my childwill be greatly improved as a result o thecutting, I still suer right along with him.I sit up during the long hours o the night,holding his hand and ministering to everypossible need.

Dont think or one moment that ourwonderul Father in heaven doesnt do thesame thing or us. Like a small child we may

cry over the pain and blame our Father orallowing the cutting to be done. And like ahuman parent, God must weep because Hehas no way to communicate His reason orsubjecting us to the pain. It is just as impos-sible or us to understand Gods decisionor our lives as it is or our children to com-prehend our decisions or them.

I think it would be an overwhelming

revelation to see ourselves without Godsmysterious permissions, painul thoughthey be. Only when we see Jesus ace to aceand reason on the plane o immortality will

we be able to thank Him or allowing things

to be just exactly as they were.I can look back upon certain shattering

experiences in my past and recognize howthey altered the entire direction o my lie.It is easy or me to see how any signicantchange in those disappointing events couldhave sent me in a totally opposite direction.I tremble to think what my lie might nowbe had God not measured out to me those

bitter experiences.

Chosen From Eternity

indeed the hardships are necessary toprepare us or entrance into heaven, then

they should be looked upon as a part oGods great election plan or our salvation.Isaiah wrote, Behold, I have rened thee,but not with silver; I have chosen thee in

the urnace o aiction (Isaiah 8:10).What a dierence it makes in our at-

titude i we can see suering as a sign oGods special choice or us to spend eternity

and according to Paul; He hath chosen usin him beore the oundation o the world,that we should be holy and without blamebeore him in love (Ephesians 1:).

Can you athom the exciting reality othat truth? You are one upon whom the eyeo God has rested rom eternity. Troughall those eons o time, divine wisdom hasbeen perecting a detailed plan or your

sanctication and ultimate salvation. Asyou submit to Him, He will certainly per-orm only what has been determined as ab-solutely essential to carry out His plan oryour lie. I that plan allows or heartacheshere and there, and even apparent disastersrom time to time, God will never permitmore than we can bear. He will be there tomeasure and temper the urnace according

to our strength and according to our need.Does that sound like a contrived expla-

nation or the problem o pain and aic-tion? It will, no doubt, to the person who

does not believe in the existence o God. He

scos at the idea that a loving, omnipotentDeity would not intervene to spare His ol-lowers rom all trouble and pain. Oen thebeliever is hard-pressed to justiy the appar-ent arbitrary manner in which some suerand some are spared. How can we respondto the accusation that a just God wouldprotect all His people rom all trouble atall times?

First o all, let us concede that God coulddo that very thing. He has the power to pre-

vent accidents. He could commission angelsand the Holy Spirit to override the law ocause and eect in the lives o all Christians.Tey would not get bad colds, stub theirtoes, or contract cancer.

What would be the eect o such a pro-gram? Te answer is obvious. Everyone

would rush into the Christian camp in or-der to be protected rom trouble in the esh.Te world would literally be compelled toollow Christ or purely physical reasons.

God doesnt build His kingdom upon ap-

peals to such motives.It seems logical that God had to allow the

natural laws to operate equally upon all todemonstrate the unconditional nature o Hislove. Christians do inherit the same genet-ic weaknesses as others who have no aith.Tey have accidents, and oen die o the

very same diseases that assail the unbeliever.Physically, then, is there any dierence

in the way Christians suer, and the waynon-Christians suer? Te answer to thatquestion must be careully qualied. Godreveals no partiality in the way He permitsnatural law to aect all mankind. Any di-erence that enters the picture must bebased upon the individuals response ratherthan any dierence God makes betweencategories or classes. Tis is another way o

saying that no one in the world can preventtroubles coming into his lie, but he can de-cide what those troubles do to his lie aerthey happen.

dering to the will o God and praying or aspirit to prot rom whatever God permits.Such a trusting aith cannot only bringpower to bear the suering with less trau-ma, but also, in some cases, to be healed othe aiction as well. Tis response o Godto the aith o an individual has nothing todo with avoring a class o people. God isstill operating within the ramework o law,

but this time spiritual law instead o natu-ral. Tat law is not limited to any national-ity, race, or religion. All who approach Himin aith will tap into the same reservoir odivine power. Even though Gods love isunconditional, His healing power is not.Nevertheless, the conditions are the sameor all, and He delights to set the spirituallaws o asking, believing, and receiving into

operation or anyone.Here, then, lies the most understandable

human explanation or the mysterious waysome are aicted and others are not. Some

er and die. God has to deal with each indi-vidual on the basis o that persons aith andthe kind o prayer he oers. In order to answer such aprayer o aith, God may have to permit ex-periences o pain or aiction.

Again, God will have to answer thatprayer according to His omniscient knowl-edge o the uture o that individual. OnlyOne who accurately oresees the conse-quence o every act can saely be trusted tocontrol the circumstances o lie.

Is it hard to submit to a God who doesnot always explain His omniscient actions?Indeed, it would be impossible to trust Him

i we had no other subjective evidences oHis commitment to our happiness. But any-one who believes that Jesus was willing todie in his place would have to believe also

that Jesus would always work or his best

good. God would have to deny His ownnature to do anything against the One Heloved more than His own lie.

Tis is the assurance that sustains thosewho suer under unexplainable circum-stances. Even though they cant understandwhy God allows their condition, they knowit would be totally contrary to Gods natureto permit anything against their highest

interests. Teir aith dares to believe thati they could see the uture as God sees it,they themselves would choose no other waythan He chooses.

Is there evidence that obstacles and hard-ships are sometimes necessary or the high-est achievement? Nature itsel bears witnessthat it is so. Certain migratory birds mustwait or strong, opposing winds beore they

can achieve the heights necessary or theirlong-distance ights. Tere are some ruitsthat cannot ripen until they have beennipped by the rost.

Can Hardships Help Us?

Are there souls who cannot mature untilthey have been bueted by hardshipsand opposition? Undoubtedly. We think oMoses spending orty years in the wilder-ness beore God could use him or lead-ing Israel out o bondage. We marvel at theyears John was isolated and imprisoned onPatmos beore he could become the writero Revelation. And Paul experienced torture

and imprisonment beore he could write,Godliness with contentment is great gain(1 imothy 6:6).

I believe Paul was ripened or the king-dom during those seasons o solitary con-nement. I think John needed the rest romconstant, wearying oversight o the church-es. It is almost impossible or human be-ings to recognize the limits o their physi-

cal endurance. Tey seldom stop in time toprevent damaging collapse. A Cambridgenaturalist released a pigeon that had beenborn in a cage. For the rst time the bird

Sometimes God has to stop people romtheir urious pace beore they destroy theirown useulness. Te trauma o a suddenstop may be hard to understand and accept.Sickness, loss o job, or even tragedy may benecessary in order to provide time or phys-ical and spiritual recuperation. Be still, andknow that I am God (Psalm 6:10). In thethoughtul hours and days o slow recovery

rom surgery, many have ound the secreto lie in Christ.

Perhaps only God understands whypain is oen the only thing that can get the

attention o human beings. Never should

we blame God or utilizing the one devicethat will ultimately draw us to Him. Strangeas it may seem, prosperity, good health,and smooth sailing do not attract the soulto God. A man was imprisoned in a towerand was trying to alert passersby o his di-lemma. Tey could not hear his cries, so hebegan to drop gold coins rom his pocketto attract their attention. But although they

scrambled about to recover all the allingmoney, not one pedestrian looked up to seethe plight o the prisoner. Finally, he man-aged to break o a chunk o mortar romthe crumbling wall and dropped it out thewindow. It struck a man on the head, injur-ing him. Only then did the man look upand get the message rom above.

In the same way all manner o blessings

are taken or granted. Instead o looking tothe source, we are busily gathering morerom the world around us. It is only whenwe are hurt that we look up and begin to

to communicate.

Looking or the Reasons

er a period o test, will God alwaysreveal the reasons or His divine

permissions in our livesHis dried-upbrooks? Eventually, yes. But not necessar-ily in this lie. Our aith may have to holdus steady until God can explain to us, ace

to ace, why it had to be. Paul nally cameto know why God allowed his thorn in theesh. It was to keep him rom eeling ex-alted over the abundance o revelationsgranted him. I may have to wait until Jesuscomes to understand why my little eight-year-old son suered so long beore dyingo a brain tumor.

It took a ew years or the citizens o

Coee County, Alabama, to understandwhy the boll weevil invaded their elds,devastating the cotton industry completely.Aer turning to diversied arming and

growing peanuts, the armers o CoeeCounty erected a monument to the bollweevil. In the memorial inscription, creditis given to the boll weevil or orcing thechange o crops, creating unprecedentedprosperity or that area.

Christians should look or the reasonwhen trials appear. Usually, a new door willopen when one brook dries up. But i the

years bring no satisactory explanation otragic loss, then we should trust Him still.Someday He will make it plain to us. In themeantime, we are sustained by the comorto the One who ully understands our griesand sorrows. Jesus became one o us so thatHe could experience every pain and be aaithul intercessor or us. Only those whohave passed through the same suering can

truly sympathize and communicate withour hearts. When one grie-stricken athercried out, Where was God when my sonwas killed in that car accident? the answer

quietly came back, He was exactly where

He was when His Son was tortured andkilled on the cross.

Isnt there a tremendous lesson in thatanswer? I God would not intervene to saveHis own Sons lie because He saw that greatgood would eventually result, then He musthave seen some uture good when He al-lowed my son to die also. And is that not thereason I could eel the sweet, personal touch

o the Father upon my lie during those darkhours o grie? He knew exactly how I elt.He could minister to me as no human riendcould do. Has not my own ability to providehealing comort been greatly strengthenedbecause I have shared a similar sorrow withthose who have lost children?

Christians should have no illusions aboutthe source o aictions. Sin is the cause o

all suering in the world today. God is o-ten blamed or doing the devils work. Notone cancer has ever been caused by God.In the experience o Job we have a perect

picture o Satans mischievous program to

aict Gods aithul children. Up to certainlimits God allowed Job to be tested by thegreat adversary, and the triumphant con-clusion o the story reveals why God per-mitted things to go as ar as they did. Jobemerged rom the devastating trials with astronger aith and greater prosperity thanhe had beore.

Tere may be many reasons that God al-

lows Satan limited access to His ollowers,but one o the chie positive eects is to keepChristians constantly on guard against sin.Trough the exercise o a wide-awake con-science, the rst approach o our cunningenemy can be recognized and repulsed. Teknowledge that he is apt to attack at anymoment or place develops a healthy spirito alert deensiveness.

Te story is told o one old Cape Codsherman who always hauled in the mostsought-aer catch o the entire eet. Becausehis sh were so lively and healthy, they

preserving them rom the normal lethar-gic state brought on by prolonged captiv-ity. Teir obvious alertness made them themost desirable in the eyes o the buyers.

Can we not see in this story a possiblereason or our own harassment by the wilySatan? Does God allow him to threaten usso that we might be constantly in a protec-tive stance? Perhaps this provocation is ex-

actly what we need to produce a necessaryattitude o vigilance.

In the days o the Napoleonic wars, be-ore radio or telegraph had been invented,

nals. Even rom a long distance the agscould be deciphered as they slowly spelledout words letter by letter. It was by thismethod that the Battle o Waterloo was re-ported to the anxious citizens o London.

For years Napoleon had struggled tobring Europe to his eet. Finally his goalwas in sight and only the thin, red line oHighlanders stood in his way at Waterloo.

Te banks o England had poured everyavailable pound into government loans todeeat Napoleon. I the Battle o Waterloowas lost, Britain would be lost.

On the coasts o Dover the people oLondon gathered to watch or news o thebattle. Suddenly they saw across the channelthe big semaphore begin to move. Painullyslow, the letters began to orm into the rst

words o a message:

the scene and blotted out the signals. Butthe people had seen enough to convincethem that their general had been put torout. In despair they ed the city. Raw mi-litia rushed to the coast prepared to die indesperate hand-to-hand combat with theexpected invasion orce. Roadblocks wereerected and houses hastily ortied.

For two days London resigned itsel to

destruction. Ten the storm abated and theog began to li. Watchers saw the sema-phore ags begin to move once more, andthe message was slowly spelled out:

Living in a world that is oen obscuredby tears and human misunderstanding, we
