Getting Around
GreenwaysFor a leisurely walk, jog, or bicycle ride, there’s no better place than one of The Bronx’s many greenways.
The Mosholu-Pelham Greenway parallels parkways and scenic drives from Riverdale to City Island, and intersects all the other greenways. The Bronx River Greenway connects a string of parks through the center of the borough along the course of the Bronx River. The Hutchinson River Greenway traces the path of that river in the eastern Bronx. The Putnam Trail leads north into Westchester County, where it becomes South County Trailway, which was built on the right-of-way of the old Putnam rail line. Just south of The Bronx, Randalls Island has multiple paths and an array of soccer and baseball fields.
Subway and train lines in The Bronx generally run north-south, and are the best option for getting to and from the other boroughs. The 4/5/6 trains travel to the east side of Manhattan, while the B/D/1/2 trains go to the west side. Transit maps are available from the station agent at most subway stations.
Metro-North Railroad commuter trains run about once every half-hour on weekdays and about once per hour on weekends at most stations, providing easy access to Grand Central Terminal, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut.
To access other regional and national transit services, including the Long Island Rail Road, New Jersey Transit, and Amtrak, take the 1/2 trains to Penn Station in Manhattan.
Every corner of The Bronx is accessible by bus, and it’s the best way to travel east-west across the borough.
The Bronx has two Select Bus Service (SBS) routes, the Bx12 SBS serving Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway, and the Bx41 SBS, serving Webster Avenue. All SBS buses require payment before boarding; keep the receipt from the ticket vending machine as proof-of-payment for the duration of your trip.
The George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Washington Heights offers limited long-distance and interstate bus services, and several local bus routes in The Bronx connect to the station. For a greater range of services, the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown can be accessed via the 1/2 trains.
Of the three major airports in the New York City area, The Bronx is closest to LaGuardia Airport, just across the East River. The best way to get there by public transportation is to travel by subway or Metro-North into Manhattan and transfer at 125 Street to the M60 SBS.
To get to John F. Kennedy International Airport, travel by subway into Manhattan and transfer to a Jamaica Center (Queens)-bound E train. At Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK Airport, transfer to the AirTrain for service to all terminals.
For service to Newark Liberty International Airport, travel to Penn Station and board a New Jersey Transit train with service to the airport on the Northeast Corridor line or the North Jersey Coast Line.

City Island
Reminiscent of a small New England town, City Island is located on the east side of the borough. The island is most famous for its numerous seafood restaurants, local shops, and galleries, which line both sides of City Island Avenue. The City Island Nautical Museum offers exhibits that tell the story of nearby Pelham Bay and the island’s rich nautical history.
Bronx Zoo
The Bronx Zoo sits on 265 wooded acres and features more than 6,000 exotic animals representing more than 600 species, making it the largest urban zoological park in the U.S. The Zoo, which is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, has earned a reputation for its excellence in animal care, conservation, and naturalistic exhibit design that mimics the habitats found in the animals’ natural range.
Arthur Avenue
Arthur Avenue, the real Little Italy of New York, is the best place to buy fresh pasta, cheese, meat and pastries in The Bronx. Located in the Belmont section of the borough, Arthur Avenue is filled with Zagat-rated restaurants offering Italian-American cuisine that keep visitors coming back for more.
Bronx Museumof the Arts
The Bronx Museum of the Arts is an internationally recognized cultural destination that presents innovative contemporary art exhibitions and education programs, and is committed to promoting cross-cultural dialogues for diverse audiences. Since its founding in 1971, the Museum has played a vital role in The Bronx by helping to make art accessible to the entire community and connecting with local schools, artists, teens, and families through its robust education initiatives and public programs.
The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday with free admission.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees began a new chapter in their storied history with the opening of Yankee Stadium in 2009. Located directly across the street from the site of the original, the new Stadium’s architecture is a celebration of the spirit and tradition of the franchise. While firmly rooted in the past, the Stadium has a vision toward the future, incorporating the best in technology and state-of-the-art guest services.
Woodlawn Cemetery
The Woodlawn Cemetery, founded in 1863, is a National Historic Landmark site spanning 400 acres. Its monuments represent some of the best examples of memorial art and architecture in the nation; its collection of trees encourages birds and other fauna to make their home among the cemetery grounds. Walking tours, musical and theatrical performances, and other events are curated year-round by the Woodlawn Conservancy to celebrate this Bronx landmark.
Wave Hill
Wave Hill is a public garden and cultural center, located in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. Overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades, Often called “one of the greatest living works of art,” this serene and intimate garden setting offers visitors a rich array of experiences, from art exhibitions and concerts to guided walks, garden and nature workshops, tai chi and yoga.
Wave Hill is open Tuesday through Sunday, with free admission Saturday mornings.
Hall of Famefor Great Americans
The Hall of Fame for Great Americans, designed by Stanford White, stands on the campus of Bronx Community College. Opened in 1901, the elegant roofed walkway is lined with imposing columns and 98 bronze busts of celebrated citizens. It winds its way around three magnificent Beaux-Arts buildings erected around the same time. Together, these classic structures are designated a National Historic Landmark.
Grand Concourse
Designed by Louis Aloys Risse, the Grand Concourse is the borough’s major thoroughfare. Built in 1894, it was modeled after the Champs-Élysées in Paris but is considerably larger, stretching four miles in length and 180 feet in width. It opened in November 1909, and in 1997 the southern portion of the Grand Concourse became the home of the Bronx Walk of Fame, where the names of illustrious Bronxites are displayed.
New YorkBotanical Garden
An unforgettable departure from the everyday, the New York Botanical Garden is America’s premier urban garden. Its special exhibitions, seasonal programs, and engaging activities inspire visitors of every age and interest. The Botanical Garden is an ever-changing living museum, and a showplace of natural beauty and wonder.
The Botanical Garden is open Tuesday through Sunday, with free admission on Wednesdays.
