The Broken Seal

Matthew 27:62-66

Luke 24:1-12

I. The Enemies of Christ Remembered His Promise. Matt. 27:63

A. Let's think about the body of Jesus.

Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree... (1 Pet. 2:24)

B. Nicodemus and Joseph laid His Body in the tomb.

C. His Enemies Feared His Lifeless, Breathless Body.

"After three days I will rise again." (V. 63)

John 2:19, 21-22

“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”…21But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.

Matthew 12:39-40

But He answered and said to them,

“An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 17:9

Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying,

“Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.”

D. They knew that He had promised a bodily resurrection, not just a spiritual resurrection.

E. Strangely, they called Jesus a deceiver, yet they feared that He might really rise again.

II. The Enemies of Christ were Concerned about His Promise. (V. 64)

A. They wanted the tomb sealed and guarded until the third day was over.

B. They also feared that His disciples might hatch a plot to make it appear that He had risen.

C. They trembled at the impact upon the public if word got out that He had come back to life.

D. This is exactly what happened when Christ arose.

III. The Enemies of Christ were Conquered by His Promise. (V. 65-66)

A. Pilate granted the guard and had his soldiers seal the stone over the tomb with the Roman seal.

B. The broken seal became the great proof of the promised resurrection.

(Matt. 28:11-15)

C. Christ Arose! The promise was fulfilled!

(Matt. 28:5-10)

Luke 24:3-6

Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.4And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.5Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?6He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee…

Things to remember concerning the resurrection:

The Broken Seal Guarantees the Resurrection!

The Resurrection Guarantees the Deity of Christ!

His Promise Guarantees Salvation – Life after death.

To all who will trust in Him!

Things to Remember:

Remember: He is alive!

Remember: He is coming back again!

Remember: He keeps His promises!

Remember: That whoever calls on the name of the LORD

– shall be saved!
