The Broken Gift ‘The Broken Gift’ by Daniel Friedman is a

stand alone sequel to his first book, ‘The Gene-

sis One Code’. Though they are written as a se-

ries, the author assures readers that they can be

read independently or in any order. I cannot

comment on this claim as I have not yet read

the first instalment. Both books aim to reconcile

biblical texts and scientific findings. His evi-

dence includes many topics, but is largely based

in a biblical clock formula used to reconcile the

seemingly contradictory timelines used in biblical texts and scientific

scholarship. Both texts focus on creation stories, specifically attempt-

ing to reconcile Genesis with current scientific findings. It is my un-

derstanding that The Broken Gift further elaborates on many ideas

presented in its precursor and expands to focus on the origin of hu-

mans.

Friedman’s qualifications for tackling such a complex and contro-

versial topic are a life of practice and intellectual curiosity in his Jew-

ish faith and a formal education and career in the sciences. Friedman

is an author, engineer, and CEO with a passion for exploring the rela-

tionship between religion and science.

The Broken Gift is structured in a well organized and approacha-

ble manner. The book opens with an attention-grabbing introduction

to the many complexities of this topic. It then flows into the history of

the controversy between science, religion, and the origin of human

kind. The thesis is further supported with evidence from scientific re-

search, the Torah, and Genesis.

Page 3: The Broken Gift - MOE · 2016-08-05 · The Broken Gift ‘The Broken Gift’ by Daniel Friedman is a stand alone sequel to his first book, ‘The Gene-sis One Code’. Though they

Then Friedman explains his formula for converting Human time to

Divine time, with which he is able to draw parallels between biblical

teachings and scientific findings. The rest of the book uses this foun-

dation to identify and explain these parallels, covering a wide range of

topics including humanity, the flood, and the development of lan-

guage.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is well written and approachable

for anyone. I am withholding one star because this book does not con-

clusively deliver on its very big promises. It is a great introduction to a

very interesting topic. However, this book seems to promise an easy

fix to one of the biggest controversies in human history in a mere 260

pages. That big promise left me feeling sceptical the whole time I was

reading. There is not nearly enough evidence to bring science and reli-

gion together definitively. Rather, it provides a fascinating and well re-

searched perspective and a very admirable attempt to bring peace to

one of the greatest debates in human history.

The Broken Gift is a great read that I would recommend to anyone

with interest in the relationship between religion and science or in the

origins of humankind. Furthermore, I would highly recommend this

book to those with polarized beliefs as it may provide an interesting

and fresh perspective. One thing for sure, no matter what your beliefs

are, this book will give everyone something to think about the im-

portance of life. I cannot say I am convinced yet, but I thoroughly en-

joyed this book and look forward to further researching the topic and

reading more from Friedman.

On February 28 2015, a picture originally shared by Korean variety

show 'Unpretty Rapstar' began circulating online. The picture shows

Jimin texting the 'Unpretty Rapstar' scriptwriter via KakaoTalk, a mes-

saging app.

However, netizens were not so interested in what Jimin had to

say. Instead, they were interested in her KakaoTalk profile picture,

which features a corgi relaxing on a red cushion.

Netizens pointed out that this picture ap-

pears to be the same corgi that was featured on

iKON Jin Hwan's sister's Instagram. The post

showed a corgi puppy sitting next to a red cush-

ion.

The caption wrote, "New member of the fam-

ily." Both the puppy and the cushion are identical

with the one in Jimin's profile picture, and since

then, the picture has been deleted from

Jin Hwan’s sister’s account.

Fans believe this is evidence that

Jimin and Jin Hwan are close friends.

Although one could argue that this

shows that they are just close friends, it

is suspected that they have been dating

before the identical corgi pictures were discovered. A few months ago,

pictures of what appeared to be Jimin and Jin Hwan shopping togeth-

er circulated around the internet. Fans have also pointed out that they

have worn and carried around the same items, suggesting that they

share their accessories.

Global warming is affecting everybody, especially in a humid, tropical state

such like Singapore.

Many are afraid that tackling climate change (global warming) is going to

be too costly. But increasingly, studies are showing action will not just be

cheaper than inaction, but could actually result in economic, environmental

and even health benefits, while improving sustainability.

Global warming is affecting the climate. In the northern hemisphere, envi-

ronmentalists are observing melting Artic sea ice. The decline in Arctic sea ice,

both in extent and thickness, over the last several decades is alarming. Satellite

observations show that Arctic sea ice is now declining at a rate of 11.5 percent

per decade, relative to the 1979 to 2000 average. Polar bears are endangered as

the ice that they are lying on might break. Soon, polar bears may become ex-

tinct. These facts do not reassure me, I would not want the ice to melt or the

polar bears to become extinct.

Air-conditioners are used by many Singaporeans. However, the air-

conditioners produce greenhouse gases. If you can imagine a cubic area of

space and you remove 10 degrees of heat from it, you are adding that heat to

the outside environment. This is what is happening when we use the air-

conditioners. While we are making the interior environment cooler, the exteri-

or environment will be hotter.

If the weather is not very hot, you can just use the fan. Therefore, less

greenhouse gases will be produced causing global warming to decrease.

Therefore, let us work together to protect our environment better now!

How does Androids harm us?

Imagine you are sick and coughing ridiculously as you hobble out

of your room to call your mother for assistance. You step on a smooth

bump by accident and fall. However, you have not hit the floor. An an-

droid pulls you to your feet and scans your body.

“You are slightly feverish. You need to have 110 hours of rest.”

Looking at him in exhaustion, you nod your head. You are about to

head back to your bed to rest when the android carries you and gently

places you on your bed and asks for permission to buy your medicine.

A few days later, you find yourself jumping with excitement as you

run to your android, healthy but over-reliant on this humanoid tech-

nology.

This is the future. Change the present. Androids will one day con-

trol humans if you do not stop supporting technological companies.

Countries like Japan and Korea have already created androids which

have the abilities to sing.

Human-like android robots have been made recently to help hu-

mankind, but what if the android can destroy you physically and also,

mentally? This is a question we need to think about seriously, especial-

ly the positive and negative impacts of technologies in our lives.

Stylish Looks EASY AND Time-saving makeup!

We use makeup to enhance our beauty and hide our imperfec-

tions. Sometimes application can be difficult and this can sometimes

frustrate us. Here are some hacks to make your make up routine easi-

er!

When concealing your dark circles, apply the concealer in a trian-

gular shape rather than dotting it. This helps you lighten the eyes

instead of making it look more droopy and sagging. It hides the

darkness much better

Choose complementary eyeliner

colours to brighten your eyes

better. Brown eyes use a navy-

blue eyeliner and blue eyes use

copper eyeliner.

Use a business card to pull your lid

up so you can get the mascara right to

the base of your lashes.

To avoid getting lipstick in your teeth and having to embarrass

yourself in front of your friends, stick in finger into your mouth,

wrap your lips around the finger and pull out. This will help get

rid of any extra lipstick on your lips.

Use powder foundation as a lip primer. Dust a little on your lips

before putting on your lip colour and it will last longer.

Moisturize 5 to 10 minutes ahead of applying foundation. Your

makeup will be easier to apply and it will stay better on your

skin.

Choose the right colour for your foundation. Instead of applying

it on your arm, apply it on your cheek instead. Your skin tone

should match your neck colour.

With all these simple tips, you will have an easy time trying to

get that flawless look that you want to achieve.

Food is rated based on their nutritional content, so

it is vital to be aware of what you consume. Some foods

have low nutrition, while others are considered high nu-

tritional foods. High nutritional foods, also known as

micronutrients, contain a greater percentage of both vit-

amins and minerals. Vitamins are essential substances

that the body cannot manufacture. Vitamins provide the

growth and development and that our bodies need. Some

examples of micronutrients are avocados which contain

twice the amount of potassium found in bananas.

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and a poor diet is often evi-

dent in its appearance. The most common compound on earth is water. It

is the primary mode of transportation for all nutrients in the body which

moisturizes our skin, naturally giving it a healthy and glowing appear-

ance. Water can also prevent and alleviate headaches. A human loses wa-

ter through breathing, perspiration, urine and bowel movements each

day, hence, we need to replenish it by taking in more water. Drinking ad-

equate amount of water can decrease the risk of colon, bladder and

breast cancer. The necessary daily water intake is about 1.9 litres. All in

all, we should know what kinds of food to eat to keep ourselves in the

pink of health. :)

BTS in Singapore Yet another Korean Pop boy group visited Singapore in

2014. It was none other than BTS, a popular boy group known

for their powerful dancing and strong vocals.

BTS is also known as Bangtan (Boys) which means bullet-

proof when translated in English. BTS consists of 7 members

in total; Jin, Rap Monster, Suga, J-Hope, V, Jimin, and

Jungkook. BTS debuted on June 13, 2013 with No More Dream

on M! Countdown. This song won the hearts of many with its

catchy hip hop tunes and captivating dance moves. This song

questions the listener’s dreams, if they were really what you

wanted or they were imposed on you by others. This was their

way of introducing to us what they wanted their music to mean

to their listeners.

BTS surprised their Singaporean A.R.M.Y., their official

fan base, when they announced on their social media plat-

forms that they would be visiting Singapore as a part of their

first tour. The response was overwhelming as the estimated

number of Singaporean A.R.M.Y.’s is 11.3K, according to their

official twitter. They announced that they would hold their

“live trilogy” performance on December 13, 2014 but would al-

so hold a fan meeting event the evening before. They managed

to nearly fill the 5,000-seat theatre of The Star Performing

Arts Centre on the day of the concert which set a very eager at-

mosphere for both the fans and BTS. They also promised their

Singaporean A.R.M.Y.’s at the end of their concert that they

would revisit Singapore in 2015 to continue their live trilogy –

BTS Live Trilogy, Episode 1 BTS Begins.

We also managed to get some responses from our very own

SJC A.R.M.Y.s.

Nikki Ang (3E): It was a really fun experience! Their concert

did not have the atmosphere of a concert though; it was more

of a party-like atmosphere. I cannot wait for Episode 1 in 2015!
