Dr. John A. Broadus

Born 1827 in Northern Virginia and attended U of VA in Charlottesville

where he was both pastor and professor at the college.

One of four founding fathers of the Southern Baptist Theological

Seminary first in Greenville, SC (1859) and later Louisville, KY (1877).

During the Civil War he served for a while as chaplain to

Robert E. Lee's army in Northern Virginia and missionary to General

Stonewall Jackson in 1863.

Referred to as the Billy Graham of the 1900’s, had connections with the

Rockefeller’s (Fifth Avenue Baptist), Carnegie's, and Morgan’s.

Samuel Sinclair Broadus

Born 1860 in Greenville, SC and attended Furman then U of VA

in Charlottesville.

After graduating college went to work for John D. Rockefeller and

Standard Oil for six years.

In 1891 he was training with Theodore Harris in the banking

business in Louisville, KY.

In 1892 he was head cashier for the Merchant’s Bank in Florence he

founded (brother Boyce joins him). In 1897 branch opened in Tuscumbia,

by 1904 headquarters had moved to Decatur and by 1910 twelve branch

banks had been formed with the name changed to Tennessee Valley

Bank.

From Merchants to BBVA Compass some $4 billion later.

Building of new First Baptist church in Decatur, Carnegie Library,

Horseshoe Bend National Park, Howard University Trustee, etc.

Wrote “Chronological History of the Church” for First Baptist cornerstone

laying August 11, 1908. Joined Central Baptist March 1912.
