Population-1763

1. The general composition of the population:

A) 65 000 inhabitants.

B) Mainly Canadien

C) Some Amerindians and Blacks (some were slaves)

Economy: 1763-1800Fur Trade: The economy is still based on furs. Still the main source for immigration.

1. Changes after the Conquest:

-French fur trade merchants are replaced by British ones

-Territory expands Northwest and now includes areas around the Hudson’s Bay and the Great Lakes.

-New fur trade companies: Hudson’s Bay Company, Northwest Company

-More trading posts develop.

B) He is VERY unique because he did not like Royal Proclamation, even though he was British.

C) He supported the habitants farmers.

D) He encouraged French Canadian traditions, legal rights and customs.

E) He was essentially kicked out of Quebec for trying to promote his ideas as the British merchants wrote a petition to the King asking for him to be removed.

F) His ideas were eventually addressed in the Quebec Act in 1774, even though he died in 1766.

2. The American Revolution ( 1776-1783)

A) The 13 Colonies wanted independence from

Britain.

B) Influenced by the NEW idea of LIBERALISM,

they declare independence (1776), fight the

American Revolutionary war (1776-1783),and

eventually win the war. They sign the Treaty of

Versailles (1783 ) and create the USA!

The Loyalists

The American Revolution caused a new group of immigrants to come to Canada. They will settle in Upper Canada(ONT) ,Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The Loyalists was their name because they were loyal to the British King. Known as “his most loyal subjects”. They did not see themselves as Americans.

Territory got bigger.

B) French civil laws came back.

C) Seigneurial rights came back.

D) Test Act is abolished, so Roman Catholics could take public posts. (Catholic Church gets its power back)

E The Cathloic church could collect the Tithe or Church tax.
