THE BRITISH ISLES 

 1. The rose is the emblem of England. It is pink. 

3.The dragon, the daffodil ( a flower) and the leek are Welsh emblems. The daffodil is yellow, the leek is green and white and the dragon is red. 

The British  Isles are the United Kingdom plus the Republic of Ireland. 

Great  Britain  is  three  countries:  England, Scotland and Wales. 

The  United  Kingdom  (UK)  is  England, Scotland,  Wales  plus  a  small  province: Northern Ireland. 

Ireland is an independent Republic. 

Population: ‐ 60 million in the UK (English, Scottish, 

Irish, Welsh) ‐ 3.5 million in the Republic of Ireland

Capital cities 

‐ London is the capital of England. ‐ Cardiff is the capital of Wales. ‐ Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland ‐ Belfast is the capital of Northern 

Ireland. ‐ Dublin is the capital of the Republic of

Emblems 2. The shamrock is the Irish emblem. The emblem of Ireland is green, of course! 

4. The thistle is the Scottish emblem. It is purple.

b‐ Write the names of the capitals (Indiquer les capitales de chaque pays en majuscules sur les pointillés) [2,5pts] 

c‐  Colour the Irish flag and the Union flag (Colorier le drapeau de la République d’Irlande et l’Union Jack, drapeau du Royaume‐Uni)  [1pt] 

d‐  Colour Scotland purple, colour England pink, colour Wales red, colour Northern Ireland orange and the Republic of Ireland green.   [2,5pt] 

e‐  Colour the flags which are the origin of the Union Jack (colorier les drapeaux qui composent l’Union Jack)  [1,5pt] 

f‐ For each emblem, write the number corresponding to its description, then colour it. (pour chaque emblème, indiquer dans le cercle le numéro correspondant à sa description et le colorier comme indiqué)   [6pts] 

g‐ Fill in the grid (completer le tableau des pays et des nationalités correspondantes)   [3pts]
