PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017 is coming to a close, and this report is an opportunity for me to reflect on the year gone by, in terms of what BWHA has achieved, and what is yet to be completed.

Once again everyone in the association has worked hard to achieve a successful fixture competition across junior and senior grass and turf competitions, development of players, umpires, coaches and technical officials and successful performances at state championships. The results of these activities are listed elsewhere in this report and a brief summary is provided here to put this effort into context.

• Ran hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at five turf venues and two grass venues, for over 3,300 registered players. Player numbers have increased marginally over both junior and senior divisions.

• Sent 20 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, Festival of Hockey, U18, U15, U13 and Masters as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park. The ability of these teams is evident in that BWHA finished the rep season with 4 first and 2 second placings across the 6 Tournaments, it was a great achievement to be in every State Championship first division final.

We have continued to actively work with clubs to ensure inappropriate on-field and sideline behaviour is minimised, and comprehensively dealt with when it occurs. Clubs have committed to managing their players and spectators, reinforcing good behaviour, and dealing with bad behaviour. We will continue to work with clubs to ensure these actions are maintained.

We continue to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG), which manages the Burringbar turf facility. Funding has been secured for a second turf and a Development Application is underway with Brisbane City Council to start construction works. All effort is being made to have the second field ready for the 2018 season, and the remaining grass field remediated.

The future of Hockey Zone has also been under the microscope, since we lack funding support for this initiative from other hockey bodies. A survey conducted to ascertain ongoing interest highlighted the popularity of HockeyZone both intra- and inter-state and we have committed to continue with this initiative for another year. Hockey Zone is a considerable investment by both BWHA and BHA, and we will persevere with seeking further funding sources.

Much effort has gone into pursuing council approval to construct turf fields at Downey Park, with little success to date - further details are available in the Vice-President’s report.

This year has seen the formation of Hockey Brisbane, a joint initiative of BWHA and Brisbane Hockey Association. This association has been set up primarily to facilitate negotiations with Hockey Queensland for the transfer of the State Hockey Centre lease from HQ to Hockey Brisbane. Progress to date in these negotiations has been slow whilst we seek to fully understand the details and requirements of this potential handover. Another activity Hockey Brisbane has undertaken is to set up a working group to explore the benefits and disadvantages of amalgamating BWHA and BHA – but this is in very early stages to date.

Whilst we can be very proud of our collective achievements, and the way we have reacted to opportunities and challenges, we do need to give further thought as to how to grow our numbers when our existing facilities are at almost peak capacity. This will be a subject for further conversations in 2018.

In closing I would like to thank all the members of my management committee for their efforts, commitment, enthusiasm, and good humour during the year. To all the dedicated volunteers at club and association level – thank you, because without you we would not be able to exist. And last but certainly not least, my sincere thanks to Kath Proctor and all the BWHA staff for their ongoing support and tremendous work effort.

Dr Karin Walduck

Vale Elma Brennand

Elma played hockey for much of her life starting at Redcliffe with Mary Nairn and then moving to Taxation to play A Grade. She was an outstanding player representing BWHA and Queensland and then went on to play for Australia in 1961. She was married in 1963 and moved overseas until the

1970’s. On her return to hockey in the 1970’s she was heavily involved in the formation of the Pine Rivers Hockey Club.

She worked hard for the association primarily in the background as an Executive member for 2

years, Records Secretary for 9 years and more recently the driving force in our Archives Committee (11 years). Her attention to detail and organised personality, brought structure to our

Archives and has given us a documented record of BWHA’s history.

Vale – Elma – you will be sadly missed. VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT This year we continued the work to build a synthetic surface at Downey Park. To date Brisbane City Council has been reluctant to provide land owner’s consent to proceed to a development application as there are concerns over the park flooding in extreme weather.

In December 2016, members of the Executive met with the Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, to discuss several options for the surface. In October 2017, we also met with Cr Bourke, Chair of Council’s Lifestyle and Community Services Committee. This meeting was quite productive and it is hoped to progress this matter further in the coming months.

GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT

The 2016 Board of Management held 5 planning meetings in October and November 2016 to look at the rules and areas recognised during the season. Due to the success of a number of our rule changes regarding Dual Registration limits and the early affiliation of teams for Division 1 to 5 – allowing for expanded divisions, we retained these rules into 2017and the closeness of the turf competitions is testament to the success of these changes.

The 83rd Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 29th November 2016. Awards recognising the valuable role volunteers play in the growth & development of our association were given out with special mention to our Volunteer of the Year Maree Knight. The Management Committee remained relatively constant with new members Kellie Roberts and Di Brodie coming onto the Board. Both Kellie and Di used this year to watch, learn and understand the workings of BWHA and have provided balanced input at all discussions, I look forward to their further involvement in 2018.

Meg Brodie stepped down from the Board of Management at the AGM after 20 years of service, her hard worked acknowledged by the Council Members in attendance, Meg’s contributions to BWHA have been:

• Board of Management: 20 years - 1993 to 1996, 1998 to 1999, 2003 to 2016 holding the positions of President (2 years) & Treasurer (2 years) during this time.

• House & Grounds, Constitution Committee, Jnr Fixture & Grading, Jnr Selections and Rep Team Manager, Grass Umpires Steward to name a few of the many committees and positions she has held.

• Meg was appointed a BWHA Life Member in 2014 Towards the end of the 2016 season a small group of interested administrators looked at ways to reduce the volunteer workload, this resulted in new forms and processes. This also involved looking at the IMG Sporting Pulse database and the limitations it has to service our association. Thank you to all on that committee and especially to Bron Morris & Sue Barsby who have worked hard in this space to make improvements for us.

The Management Committee met in December to finalise portfolios, and appoint convenors to committees. During this “off-season” period much work was done on grant applications and preparation for season 2017. We were successful in receiving grants for a Public Address system at Rasey Park, Coaches for Training Programs, a Tractor and attachments, Irrigation Pump & Platform – thank you to all involved with these grants, they take a significant load off members’ fees to provide all the things the association needs. Thank you to the BCC, Department of Sport & Recreation and the CGBF. We also acquitted the grant for recycling bins from the Keep Australia Beautiful association. Special thanks to Sonya Fisher who is the BWHA Treasurer but also oversees all grants, the HockeyZone area and is a tireless volunteer in the umpire and technical area – well done Sonya.

A lot of time has been spent this year on working with BHA to take over management of the SHC. Unfortunately, HQ decided as part of the divesting of the SHC lease, to split it into small parcels, despite BHA & BWHA’s initial advice that they were willing to manage the whole facility. The lease has now been broken into smaller pieces, with Bulimba Junior Cricket & Bulimba Men’s Hockey the likely co-holders of the grass field leases; Boating taking over the area their boats are stored;

Page 10: THE - Brisbane Women's Hockey Association · 2017-11-27 · Lesley Bennett 17 Kellie Roberts 15 Kris Birch 12 Sue Reid 18 Bron Morris 18 Di Brodie 19 Council Meetings (7) Club Attendance

10

the BCC possibly taking over the function area and hopefully Hockey Brisbane will eventually take over the synthetic hockey pitches, offices and associated infra-structure. However this is far from finalised. What has been achieved in 2017 is the formation of Hockey Brisbane Inc. an association to manage the activities BHA & BWHA do together. These items include:

• HockeyZone • Burringbar Park (with KWSHC) • Working together in Development • Working together with Turf Fixtures.

This committee has also undertaken to do the first real investigation into the pros and cons of amalgamating BWHA & BHA. There is no directive or pressure for this to occur, but we need to ensure what is best for all hockey players in Brisbane in the future, two large strong associations with their own rules and programs or one very large association with a single set of rules and programs.

Our first Council meeting for the calendar year was on the 31st January 2017 and as always was very busy discussing:

• BHMG – plans for a second hybrid turf at the facility. At the time of writing this report we are waiting on DA from the BCC to start the project.

• The new Competitions & Payment Form – replacing many individual forms to try to reduce time for our club volunteers.

• The introduction of the new turf at University of Queensland, including paying for parking Monday to Friday, as part of our turf fixture venues.

• Providing information and important dates to get the season on the way.

The Junior Committee continued with 4 members in 2017, Maree, Judy, Alyson & Tash. Tash took on the reins of Chairperson with enthusiasm. This is a large section of our association and many decisions need to be made. Thank you all for your hard work and good humour in working through this demanding area of our association. It would be great to see more people on this committee to ensure our juniors continue to develop and grow.

Following discussions with clubs it was determined that clubs wanted all turf divisions to start on the same week end, regardless of division numbers. As Division 1 only had 9 teams this allowed them to have weeks off when National Tournaments were being played. This did cause a stop-start season for them, but finding the right balance between start dates and week-ends off and byes, will continue to be a topic of discussion. Di Brodie has set up a working party to look at how we can have more club days on the turf, and improve the turf fixtures overall, we wish this committee luck in this important exercise. Thank you Di and all Competition Committee members for all your hard work to get teams playing each week.

Fixtures is why BWHA was first established and it still requires the bulk of volunteer time and resources. Lesley Bennett has looked after the Umpires and Technical area, as we all know there is no game without an umpire, thank you Lesley and your committee for all your hard work, thank you Amy in the office for ensuring many umpires were badged this year.

Once the fixtures are completed, the umpires and technical officials appointed, the Match Secretaries have the difficult job of ensuring all players are playing within our rules. It is

Page 11: THE - Brisbane Women's Hockey Association · 2017-11-27 · Lesley Bennett 17 Kellie Roberts 15 Kris Birch 12 Sue Reid 18 Bron Morris 18 Di Brodie 19 Council Meetings (7) Club Attendance

11

challenging with over 3500 members in 4 competitions across hundreds of teams. We rely heavily on club volunteers to do the correct thing, but our Match Secretaries eagle eyes are still required. Thank you Christine Blanchard, Lesley Bennett & the Junior Committee for looking after our competitions, we live in hope that eventually we will have a database that alleviates all the manual work.

Sue Reid and Kris Birch continued to work in the Communication and Governance areas, working to ensure our rules are understood and followed. While there are many more ways to reach people, the information overload still sees information not reaching its target. We will continue to work hard to use all methods to keep our members informed and engaged.

We provide Rasey Park as a venue to conduct the JTAS (primary) hockey competition from February to March. This is a great development opportunity for players and umpires and increases participation, but requires early preparation of these fields. We gained grants for a tractor mower & an irrigation pump in 2017 and these both will have a great benefit to our association. Working Bees in March saw the Downey & Rasey Park facilities prepared for fixtures in April, thank you to all clubs for your support of this. Casual staff Noala and John do an enormous amount of work all year round, well done and thanks. Work on the park never stops and we appreciate the cooperation with DP Netball and Brisbane Softball – we all love the park and work hard to look after it.

The grass fixtures commenced in April and the park was full every Saturday catering for every level and age in our sport – well done to all who played, officiated or supported in 2017. Our player numbers continue to increase each year, with turf team numbers growing, but we still have a great need for our grass fields from U7 to 70+ age groups. Car parking continues to be our major challenge on Saturdays. This year we trialled having two men’s games at Downey Park and 4 women’s grass games went to Finsbury Pk (2 games) and the Dorrington PK (2 games). This was trialled to promote the sport as a whole of life and family sport – the whole family can participate for the whole of their lives. Hockey Players need to better promote our sport to the outside world if we want to compete in this competitive recreation market.

It was wonderful not to conduct a Judiciary this year, but a number of people had to be spoken to about their behaviour especially on Saturday morning by our “Pink Vest” Duty Supervisors. We all must ensure the behaviour of our members and supporters is appropriate, so we can all enjoy the sport we love. Thank you to all junior parents and supporters who assisted on Saturday mornings.

Thank you to our Downey Park staff: Canteen - Abby; Bar – Jess; Admin – Lorraine; Time Stewards Taylah/Shona; Rookie – Jess, First Aid – John, Courtney, Steph & Lauren; the Saturday grass fixtures could not run as smoothly without you. A special thanks to Volunteer Bruce Carroll who assists every week at Downey Park, opening and closing the facility and any other jobs asked of him.

This year we continued “themed” Council Meetings to inform and engage our members and encourage them to provide clear directions for the association. With the greater use of the various electronic media, it is not a wise use of our valuable volunteers to have them attend meetings where information is simply distributed. This can easily be done with email, web, facebook etc. We will continue to only hold Council Meetings when we have a topic to discuss and provide

Page 12: THE - Brisbane Women's Hockey Association · 2017-11-27 · Lesley Bennett 17 Kellie Roberts 15 Kris Birch 12 Sue Reid 18 Bron Morris 18 Di Brodie 19 Council Meetings (7) Club Attendance

12

Management Reports after every Management Meeting to keep our members informed. Thank you to all club delegates for giving up your time to attend meetings.

We again developed, trialled, selected, trained and toured 20 representative teams this year. What a major workload for our staff and volunteers. Thank you to all involved, the results and statistics are later in this report. Thank you to Regie, Amy & Sue for all your hard work, to all selectors, coaches, manager and umpires, you are all vital to make this happen for our players – well done. We also continued to offer development opportunities for goal keepers, masters and grass level players, all were very well supported, thank you to the coaches for their time and expertise.

Thank you to our Archive Committee, Life Members and long-term supporters for continuing to work for BWHA, documenting the important history we have and organising social events. Special thanks to Elma, Shirley, Jenny & Faye. Jenny Tidey was awarded an OAM for her outstanding contribution to BWHA in 2017. Congratulations Jenny on this outstanding achievement.

Our sincere condolences to all our members who have suffered loss this year, and we congratulate those who have experienced great joy and exciting events. The hockey family is a large and varied one and we share in the highs and lows of our sporting family. At the time of writing this report, we lost another of our great volunteers BWHA Life Member Elma Brennand, and our sincere condolences to her husband Peter, children and grandchildren and the extended Dellitt families.

Thank you to the many volunteers that support our sport, especially to our President Dr Karin Walduck who took on the additional role of President of the newly formed Hockey Brisbane Inc. this year, she is an outstanding volunteer, mentor and leader and we are very lucky to have her. Thank you to the staff members casual, part-time and full time who all provide a great service to our sport. Thank you to the government departments and sponsors who allow us to grow and develop with support, both financial and in-kind.

Kathleen Proctor General Manager

TREASURER’S REPORT

Thanks as always to Kath and the team who support her in the BWHA office, for the great job again in keeping the invoices paid, the income followed up and the books kept up to date. We should be very proud of the way that we maintain our finances. The full audited Financial Statements for the year ending 30 Sept 2017 are at the end of this annual report. Overall our financial position remained stable • Revenue was still approx. $1.35m • Turf hire fees stayed at approx. 19% of our total expenses • Net profit was in line with the previous year at $18k (1% of total income) after depreciation

allowance of $53k • We received income from grants of $92,060 (an increase of 11.5% over last year)

To continue to be successful with our grant applications and to ensure that we are heard by all levels of Government, it is essential that we work with and inform our political representatives including: • BCC – Cr Andrew Wines (Downey Park) and Cr Vicki Howard (Rasey Park) • State – Hon Grace Grace MP and Hon Tim Nicholls MP (the latter will be our State

representative post boundary changes to be effected later in 2017) • Federal – Hon Trevor Evans MP. We have also met with Cr Bourke and the Lord Mayor Quirk and many government officers to try to ensure that we achieve the best outcomes for BWHA and its members. Sonya Fisher

HOCKEY ZONE REPORT

This was the first year that Hockey Zone has not been broadcast on television with the demise of Briz 31 it was decided to also drop Foxtel – due to low viewer numbers and costs - in favour of social media.

YouTube

2017 has seen the HZ YouTube channel click over into the 2 millionth view – now at 2,042,284 that is up from 1.3 million as of last year. The top videos are still the skill up videos with Kandice Olivieri on 55,769, leader for this year. We now have 7,846 subscribers. As our longest standing traceable viewership source it shows there is still a growing interest in what we are doing.

Facebook

Last year we saw the potential of posting videos to Facebook and decided it was the trend to follow. A new development for 2017 was the ability to LIVE STREAM directly to Facebook which we did for the finals with great results.

In 2016 we posted just 27 videos on Facebook – In 2017 we went on a full frontal attack with over 150 videos posted, that included highlights from every game, quirky viral videos and live streamed coverage.

The average viewership for highlights from a div 1 game was 1,600 but the “reach” for each game was much more. On the semi finals week we went live to Facebook for the first time with full coverage and reached over 44,000 people – the “viewership” was BWHA 2,500 and BHA 3,200 so you can see that Facebook is helping with awareness as well as viewership.

Grand Final day saw 2,900 live viewers for BWHA and 4,000 for BHA – the highlights brought another 8,300 combined.

The season saw a total of 45,600 views for BWHA games and 55,700 for BHA game. Quirky viral videos brought in another 55,000 views.

Livestream

We continued to stream every game in full on livestream this year with a season total of 21,700 viewers. This shows that Facebook is by far the most popular medium for us at the moment.

DATABASE & ADMINISTRATION Our challenges with the functionality of the Sports TG database continues and we await to see what direction Hockey Australia will take us in in 2018 as a new contract for the national database provider will be finalised. We hope that whoever is appointed, they will bring better results for our association. At the end of 2016 a Working Party looked at the paperwork clubs are required to submit to BWHA and ways that club volunteer workloads could be reduced. We introduced a mega-spreadsheet that covered many individual forms. Overall this new form was a success, except in regard to the Umpires Registers which will revert to a separate form in 2018. Thank you to all the ladies who were involved in this process. The BWHA Website was also updated thank you to Lisa and Amy in the office for their work on this. Following on from these improvements we are now looking at ways to further improve communications and administration, more online forms and interactive forms that clubs can work on as a team instead of emailing to each other. We hope by working together and embracing new technologies we can assist our volunteers and improve the running of hockey in BWHA.

VOLUNTEERS It is my pleasure to present to you my Board report for this my first year on management. As it was my first year, I took the time to understand the role and to learn what input I ought to be providing. I found it quite insightful being able to see from a different perspective how hard each member of the board as well as BWHA staff work each week. I am looking forward to being able to contribute more next year.

As at 23 October 2017 BWHA has received nominations for most committees. We still require nominations for the following positions:

Appeals Committee, Constitution Committee, House & Canteen Committee, Senior Turf Umpire Steward & Masters Umpire Steward.

The practice of asking clubs to assist with setting up and packing down at Downey Park and Rasey Park continues to work well (the Club Duty Day), and we will retain this practice for 2018. We thank all clubs for their assistance with these tasks and their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

The pink vests continue to be effective and this practice will also continue into 2018. Reports received from clubs indicate that people are actively seeking out the “pink vests” on game days to assist with the enforcement of safety rules and any disagreements that arise on the day. The “pink vests” are here to stay at this stage, and we thank all people who have donned a pink vest in the past for their assistance with making this initiative such a huge success.

COMPLIANCE

It would be appreciated if all volunteers could provide the association with their Blue Card details, if they haven’t done so already. It is also important for volunteers to keep an eye on their Blue Card expiry dates to ensure that they remain current. Due to the onerous requirements related to child protection it is essential that the association maintains a proactive approach, and not a reactive approach, in this regard.

We encourage any clubs who have not implemented a Blue card register to contact BWHA so we can send a useful template to them.

To protect our volunteers in the unlikely event of an accident or injury, we require clubs to ensure that all volunteers are signed in when they are assisting on a Club’s Duty Day. This is to ensure that accurate records are maintained for insurance purposes. Clubs have been very diligent in this regard, and we ask that this diligence be maintained.

We have also engaged in the process of registering a separate legal entity in preparation for the management of future turf facilities. This is to minimise the risk carried by BWHA and also creates a clear legal separation in the unlikely event that there are disputes as to liability.

Thank you to all people who have assisted BWHA this year. Every small contribution makes a difference and lightens the workload for all involved. Hockey would not happen if it was not for our volunteers!

COMMUNICATION AND ANALYTICS PORTFOLIO REPORT

In season 2017 I undertook discussions with nearly three-quarters of BWHA affiliated clubs. I’m hoping that in season 2018 this number can increase once again.

Topics of discussion included all aspects of umpiring, Tech Bench duties, feedback on the Mega-Spreadsheet introduced for season 2017, U7 and U9 transition to full field U11s, Junior players also playing seniors and representative selections. I am pleased that the robust discussions have highlighted areas where things are working well and areas that could use some improvement. I

will table my report to BWHA Board of Management and comments will be used during planning activities.

This season the Council meetings took on a slightly different flavour with many of them being discussion forums on various topics. Thank you to all clubs who participated so openly in these discussions.

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING TURF 2017 saw the second trial year where Clubs are the primary decision maker in the divisions they participated in which has given Clubs the certainty to be able to plan and recruit as their membership changes. This year we have seen very competitive divisions, a tell-tale sign of the closeness of each division was that we had to wait until the last round to confirm the finals games. A notable change in the competitiveness in divisions was Division 1 where Ascot won their first Premiership in 57 years. Whilst this trial has been positive for Clubs growth it does have its challenges when managing fixtures, including Club days and divisions playing in succession on a Saturday. The fixture committee worked very hard to try and balance the fixtures as best we could. Thanks to Liz Lobb (Chair) and Jenny Heron for your hard work on the fixture committee and your counsel. Big thanks also to Sue Barsby for her hard work. GRASS The foundation surface for our sport it is important that we keep modifying our grass competition to ensure it maintains its place in our association. This year we had 43 teams in total. DP1 6 teams, DP2 7 teams & 10 teams in DP3-5. It is important clubs nominate teams in the divisions their players are suited for, this will reduce the amount of complaints about players not suitably graded. Thanks to the ground staff for their hard work and to the grass fixtures and grading committee for their hard work. MASTERS We had 22 teams this year in our Masters competition. The season began with a few challenges and too few nominations in MM1 but thankfully we made it to 5 teams. There was the addition of MM4 with an aim to balance out the competition. Again this competition is an important part of our association and we will continue to look for ways to improve it. Thanks again to the Masters grading and fixture committee for their hard work.

Di Brodie

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS 2017 saw an increase in the number of grass teams playing at Downey Park to 43 teams. It is concerning that fewer teams are nominating to play in both DP1 and DP2 with only 6 and 7 teams respectively. To maintain an effective competition these numbers need to increase. There were 10 teams in DP3, 4 and 5. Competition for places in DP3-5 was very fierce. Clubs need to consider if they are doing the right thing for their players by keeping teams in lower divisions, ensuring easy wins or should they be challenging the players by playing in a harder competition. It was pleasing to see a mix of clubs participating in the grand finals.

Thank you to all grading and fixtures volunteers for donating the time and effort to formulate the draw, and to the ground staff Noala Gordon and John Robinson on preparing the fields and line marking so that players could showcase their skills.

MONDAY MASTERS (MM)

There were three initiatives taken by BWHA in 2017. Firstly in an effort to encourage more players and teams in MM1 the age limit for this competition was lowered to turning 31 this year. Also clubs were asked to supply team lists so that the grading committee could more accurately place teams in divisions as grading games in masters are a waste of time as players are mature enough to downplay skills in an attempt to remain or end up in a lower division. This worked for some clubs, but for others the team that eventually took the field bore no resemblance to the team lists supplied. Additionally the final position standings from 2016 showed there was a clear need for a 4 division competition. Hindsight showed that after the withdrawal of 2 teams this could still have been a 3 division competition. The divisions had 5, 6, 6 and 5 teams respectively, which allowed all divisions to be played at separate venues. This was put into disarray when SHC2 was closed for replacement, which again meant mixed divisions playing at venues and umpires from a lower division umpiring higher divisions. Most games in each division were evenly contested with just a couple of teams either outclassed or outclassing all others. Due to having 4 divisions, it was not possible to schedule all grand finals at SHC so the grand finals were held at both BP and SHC. Hopefully with 2 fields at BP in 2018, this situation won’t arise again.

UMPIRES & TECHNICAL

Rule changes were minimal again in 2017. Any changes in interpretation were explained at the turf and grass umpires rules talks conducted by Jan Hadfield and Bernie Pangrazio. These sessions are offered each year to inform umpires, coaches and captains and interested players of the rules and their interpretations.

Each week 94 umpires are required at both senior turf and senior grass games to ensure the competition can run smoothly and on time. The allocation of umpires is the job of the turf and grass umpire stewards. This year turf umpires were allocated by Kathleen Proctor in the BWHA office. Kathleen already has numerous jobs so a dedicated volunteer to take over this role in 2018 would be much appreciated. Judy Hartnett allocated the umpires to grass fixtures. Both Judy and Kathleen spent a lot of time and effort in allocating umpires, made more difficult particularly on turf with the draw having club teams running consecutively which decreased the number of top umpires capable of umpiring at Div 1 level, Then to see all that hard work disappear when clubs reallocated to different umpires. Both Judy and Kathleen use information supplied by clubs to allocate umpires. As in previous years the umpires were a mix of experienced, limited experience and novice umpires. Some clubs supply the names of fully qualified and capable umpires; others aren’t as rigorous or selective when completing their umpire registers.

BWHA provides technical staff to run all the turf games with the help of club officials. Thank you to the paid staff and volunteers who assist with the running of the competition.

TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT

In 2017 we had a number of national level umpires reduce their local umpiring workload for BWHA, but also saw a number of umpires move up through the ranks. I am sure most players and club officials are not aware of the extraordinary level of umpires we have officiating in our competition; thank you to those that umpired Division 1 regularly during the season:

Alyson, Amy, Annette, Bernie, Debbie, Debbie, Claire, Dino, Helen, Jess, Kate, Kerryl, Lauren, Lauren, Lynn, Lyn, Miranda, Monique, Naomi, Peta, Shannon, Sioux, Sonya, Tamara.

Working closely with Amy in the office, umpires were allocated to games so they could receive mentoring and assessment. This year we had 6 x Level 2 and 7 x Level 1 accreditations awarded – well done to all (a full list of badge recipients are found later in this report). Our umpires are very fortunate to have Jan Hadfield and Lyn Hill available to mentor and assist their development at the highest level – thank you Jan & Lyn for your continued support of umpiring in Brisbane. Amy used many other mentors at various venues and fixture days to maximise development opportunities, thank you to everyone for their assistance with this.

Thank you to those umpires who at short notice assisted with filling gaps due to injury or illness – I can’t thank you enough for your generous support and help.

If I could encourage all clubs to:

1. Give umpire development in their club as high a priority as player and coach development; and

2. Actively mandate and support zero tolerance of umpire abuse

we would see even greater rewards for all in our game.

Kath Proctor

GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT

In 2017 I continued in the role of BWHA grass umpire steward for the sixth year. I continued to work with club umpire co-ordinators and umpires at Downey Park.

This year the grass umpire register was part of the large spreadsheet used for gathering club information. This required the information required to be compiled from these spreadsheets and not all clubs submitted all data in this format.

This year, as in years past, many clubs had ‘regular’ umpires covering their weekly senior grass allocations. This regular use of umpires some of whom umpired nearly every week, lead to consistency, increased skill and experience and resulted in a good level of umpiring for grass teams across Downey Park. Some clubs still named players rather than umpires which affected the surety of allocations suiting the umpires who actually did the umpiring.

Several clubs have been working on developing the umpiring experience of some of their juniors by including them in their umpire register for senior grass. Senior grass clubs and players need to

Page 20: THE - Brisbane Women's Hockey Association · 2017-11-27 · Lesley Bennett 17 Kellie Roberts 15 Kris Birch 12 Sue Reid 18 Bron Morris 18 Di Brodie 19 Council Meetings (7) Club Attendance

20

recognise that Downey Park is a learning environment for these umpires and that they need to support such umpire development for the good of our sport.

This year I tried to allocate the ‘regular’, experienced umpires across all five grass divisions to share the experience and to try to ensure newer or less experienced umpires had an experienced co-umpire. This was assisted by my developing knowledge of the regular grass umpires and through co-ordination with the club umpire co-ordinators.

I would like to thank the BWHA senior grass clubs, players and umpire co-ordinators for their support and flexibility to fulfil umpire requirements each week.

Recommendations:

• The umpire register be separated from the large spreadsheet for complete details and ease of organisation and tracking of umpire allocations

• Clubs continue to complete the entire register and inform BWHA of changes e.g. injuries or absences affecting umpire availability during the season

• Clubs and players support developing umpires in the Downey Park senior grass competition

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

TURF & GRASS

Last year we established an admin working party to try and simplify some of the processes applying to registrations. This year these changes appeared to be well received and hopefully this has made the process quicker and simpler for our volunteers.

Thanks to team managers for their efforts in completing match records each week. Only part of our system is computerised so the records are still checked manually each week to ensure registrations are consistent with our rules. It is appreciated when managers complete the match sheets properly as this makes checking of records so much easier.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

MEMBER DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (MDM)

What an exciting year 2017 has been for Hockey in Brisbane, we are starting to see the results of everyone’s hard work in many area’s from our clubs and the Association, some program highlights for me were;

• An increase in the number of new coaches into the Representative and Development programs that we ran.

• A wider spread of player base into the BWHA Representative teams which was a result of smaller clubs commitment to their members to increase the knowledge and skill base of their coaches, conduct fluid programs and enhancing their player’s abilities and outcomes.

• Over 80 coaches attended level 1 coaching accreditations conducted this year. • 14 Level 1 Umpires were accredited. • 55 Community Umpires were accredited. • BWHA development staff were very busy introducing approx. 5000 new players to the

wonderful game of hockey at school programs and Gala sport days across Brisbane. • Over 150 Sporting School hockey sessions were held this year to date. • Approx 800 kids participated in Holiday Camps in and around Brisbane this year. • Over 500 kids participated in “Come and Try” days conducted across Brisbane. • Many clubs ran very successful “In house” development clinics and programs utilising their

Senior elite players. • Successful grants to upgrade Rasey Park PA announcement equipment to assist the

volunteers and co-ordinators for our U7 & U9 program and with the upgrade of the goal nets, Rasey Park is now a modern and vibrant venue to run our Rookie program.

• Successful grants to run development programs at Rasey Park which drew some of our elite National players to coach our young players.

• Representative training camps across the U13, U15 & U18 programs which included workshops and training opportunities with some of QLD and Australia’s best and current players.

The pinnacle for me were the State Championship results with 4/6 Gold Medal outcomes and 2 silver Medals from all Div 1 Grand Finals. The Runaway Bay Development Camps was a small idea that grew to be one of my favourite moments from the season. This opportunity was given to players who strive to make QLD TID selections but are unsuccessful, these camps consisted of Leadership workshops and activities, bonding sessions, cross age group networking and specialised training and coaching opportunities. Thanks to BWHA management for supporting my idea and seeing the huge potential for such a program with our athletes. I can’t wait to see these players reaching more and more of their goals. These off season camps will be bigger and better next year, with more opportunities for every player.

I am already planning a very exciting 2018 season and year to ensure the buzz continues, kicking off with the Toni Cronk GK-ing academy visiting Brisbane in January, which will give 48 Goal Keepers the opportunity to work with a past Hockeyroo legend. Thanks to everyone that has given back their time and energy to the sport to help in any way that they can, to ensure the growth of the sport and our community is thriving and successful, now it’s time to celebrate and reflect on these amazing outcomes, I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. Regie Fisher

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)

2017 was yet another busy season for the development department at Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association. New programs were established, and other favourites were continued for all of our members to take advantage of.

Junior members took advantage of the U7 & U9 Come and Try Carnival and Skills Day, U11 Development, U13 Development, U14 & U18 Development Camps and various holiday clinics, while the senior members took advantage of the Masterclasses.

Umpires were exposed to Introduction to Umpiring clinics, Turf & Grass Umpires Talks and the Umpire Mentor Workshop as well as many BWHA mentors out on the grounds. Many clubs took advantage of our services in regards to umpiring development and held Umpiring Development Clinics.

Coaches attended Community, Level 1 and Level 2 Coach Accreditation courses.

We visited approximately 52 schools and showcased hockey to 4639 students. There were 34 Sporting Schools programs and 5 Hookin2Hockey programs. We attended 10 Gala Days, and were involved in 2 Inclusive Programs.

The U7 & U9 Rookey competition expanded, running with 51 participating teams.

Our U11 Brisbane teams performed well at the U11 Southern Cross, finishing 1st in Division 1, 2nd and 4th in Division 2 and 1st in Division 3.

We successfully accredited 58 junior and senior umpires.

Many of these programs, courses and successes would not be possible without the assistance of fellow staff and volunteers. To mention a few; BWHA Office Staff (Regie Fisher, Sue Barsby, Lisa Donaldson, Kath Proctor) Jess Ross (U7 & U9 Coordinator), U11 Coaches (Lou Kendall, Kelly Thorburn, Amy Lightbody, Pam Patteson), U11 Managers (Shirley Woodward, Megan Bartholomeusz, Kirsten Logan, Raelene Berndt), U11 Selectors (Chris West, Glen Barnes, Lou Kendall), Umpire Mentors (Alyson Aleksic, Lucy Moxon, Jo Greensil, Liz Lobb, Lyn Hill, Miranda McNamara, Sonya Fisher, Naomi Zerner, Jan Hadfield),

School Coaches (Morgan Hill, Kim Abbott, Mick Gibbs, Michael Francis, Harrison Farrell, Cade Banditt, Sam Littman, Shanelle Adams, Kerrianne Stevenson, Dinah Dickson, Leigh Thomas, Achu Nair, Jamie Stone, Neil Shearer, Adam McClelland, Matthew Pitcher), U11 Development Coaches (Jaimie Fisher, Lou Kendall, Kelly Thorburn, Jess Cole, Jess Switzer, Emily Burrows), U13 Development Coaches (Janene McCall, Dion Harle, Regie Fisher, Tamiesha Elmes, Jaimie Fisher, Jamie Stone, Amanda Paech, Emily Burrows), Junior Committee (Tash Gaddes, Alyson Aleksic, Marie Knight, Judy Hartnett) And many more helpers throughout the season.

In the off-season we will be planning what’s ahead, revising and renewing programs in order to continually improve upon the previous season. I look forward to 2018 and what’s to come.

FACILITIES REPORT

In 2017 we did not have a Management Portfolio to cover this very important area of BWHA, it was seen as an operational area and as such came under the direction of the General Manager and the Office. This in effect did not change the function of the area, as Noala with John’s assistance continued to work through the facility program to prepare, repair and maintain our facilities. We are exceptionally lucky to have two such dedicated workers for BWHA. Noala in particular gives many volunteer hours as well as her set paid hours.

We were fortunate to gain funding for a number of significant grounds developments:

• A tractor, with mower, bucket & pallet forks attachments, from the GCBF. They provided $25,000 with BWHA using the final bequest money from Dr Mary Hughes to pay the balance of $18,000. This major piece of machinery will allow us to not only mow more area faster, but also maintain the fields better, getting soil, fertiliser and equipment across the park in faster and less labour intensive ways. There are a number of other attachments that can be purchased for the tractor that we are looking at to further improve our maintenance of the fields.

• A pump and connections to the water tanks behind the sheds on Noble Street to the Irrigation system on F10, 11, 12. This grant from the BCC paid for 75% of the installation with the balance being funded by BWHA & BSA (Softball). We hope this installation will assist with water costs.

Thank you to the Brisbane City Council and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for your generous support of our association.

The hard work of the Development Department has seen the introduction of a JTAS Primary Competition held pre-season at Rasey Park, while this initiative is great, increasing participation and awareness of our sport, it now means Rasey Park needs to be prepared and ready for play from the beginning of February each year. John and Noala work hard to ensure the fields and equipment are ready and that the carpark is marked for use.

Page 24: THE - Brisbane Women's Hockey Association · 2017-11-27 · Lesley Bennett 17 Kellie Roberts 15 Kris Birch 12 Sue Reid 18 Bron Morris 18 Di Brodie 19 Council Meetings (7) Club Attendance

The multi-use of Downey Park with Softball in Summer and Hockey in Winter means this large park gets very little rest and it is a credit to Noala and John that the fields are ready for play each April. We work closely with Softball to achieve this. In the last 12 months we have worked on a number of initiatives to better the park, the pump installation near F10, the spraying of weeds and pre-emergent spraying of weeds. Thank you Softball for your co-operation and support with the park we both love.

We have had a number of meetings this year with Cr Wines and Cr Howard, and the BCC Officers for Rasey Park (Meaghan Rowe) and Downey Park (Brett Parker), we have many challenges on a large, open, leased inner city park and we are currently working on a number of issues:

• The removal of the old toilet block at the end of F1 and the replacement behind the clubhouse next to the play equipment.

• Signs to stop people wearing football boots on the park – which cause enormous damage to our fields

• Facility audits & maintenance schedules

While we have improved the fields significantly in recent years, with improved equipment and infra-structure, each new development creates more work and ongoing costs. The water account for example is now above $30,000pa and we now have 5 vehicles all requiring registrations, maintenance and fuel. This all adds to the cost of the sport.

The BWHA clubhouse continues to be our administration and grass hockey focus and the funds from the canteen and bar help cover the costs of the maintenance and repair to all our facilities including the clubhouse at Rasey Park, the toilet block at F13 and F10 (shared with softball), the old wooden sheds and the maintenance shed. A report on the bar and canteen will be provided at the end of this report.

We are looking to apply for a grant through the Department of Sport and Recreation to upgrade the 1 toilet at F10 to a toilet, change room and parents room facility. This would provide a decent facility for both the BWHA & BSA use all season round.

TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT Tours – another good year with Championship & Southern Cross wins. We took out the following Championships: Super League, U15 Div 1, U13 Div 1 and Masters Div 1. With Southern Cross – we won U15 Div 1, 2 & 3, U13 Div 2 & 3 and U11 Div 1 & 3. Congratulations to all Coaches, Managers & Players.

Thank you to all Selectors who volunteered this year – it is a very time consuming job and often thankless but all players have equal opportunity to be seen. All Brisbane teams represented us well to the best of their abilities and this experience will only assist them in the future. Thank you to all Coaches, Managers and Umpires for your time that you put into each team and in achieving the best possible results. Congratulations to all of the players who made Qld teams, who made Shadow and who were identified.

Next year’s Championships are in: U13 Bundaberg (4 teams) U15 Hervey Bay (4 teams) U18 Cairns (4 teams) Masters Townsville (6 teams) Super League Brisbane (1 team) Opens (Qld Hockey Festival) Gold Coast (1 team) Apparel sales were again strong with all age groups buying a variety of apparel. This year we brought in the compulsory training singlet which was accepted by all and made trainings easier for Coaches and the players looked more professional.

Thanks to About You Promotions and Hot Lollie for suppling extra urgent apparel when required. “Stock on Hand” at the end of this season is larger than normal due to the new training singlets – ordering amounts for the size variations from U11 to U18’s was a hard guestimation.

Uniform & Equipment– we are still in the process of replacing our old playing uniforms – 40 playing top sets were replaced this year and another 30 will be replaced next year. I hope to have all players in the same uniform by 2019.

Thank you to all the Team Managers who assisted me with the uniform allocations and “safe” return of all items during this year.

ARCHIVES REPORT

I will continue to undertake this in the coming months initially to just have an electronic record of our history but hoping ultimately that this is something that can be made searchable.

CANTEEN & BAR REPORT The canteen ran fairly smoothly this year I believe, aside from minor bumps along the way.

Most staff were very hands on and extremely helpful, with the occasional straightening up from either myself or other BWHA staff, which was undoubtedly appreciated as I could not watch them at all hours of the day.

Food wise, each week differed to the next which made it hard to estimate the quantity needed each week. But Sue did a great job estimating. I believe the canteen could be improved with extra training for new staff before the season starts. I found that new staff needed more guidance which was quite time consuming and difficult to keep the fast pace consistent along with the customer needs, particularly because we are losing most of our staff from this year. Of course, it wouldn't go without saying that it was stressful at times but it was manageable. It helped me a lot having my experienced staff, which is why I would recommend keeping at least 2-3 employees who are expected to leave this year. They helped me greatly, not only out the back helping prepare food but also guiding and assisting the new staff where fit.

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT Another successful year for Brisbane Junior Girls hockey. 2017 again provided high quality competition structured by BWHA and the continued development opportunities for the players and umpires in Brisbane is outstanding.

JUNIOR COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVES 2017

Natasha Gaddes (KW)

Judy Hartnett (Valleys)

Alyson Aleksic (KW)

Maree Knight (SWU)

COMPETITION STRUCTURE

Turf

Again our competition flourished with high team numbers from JT1 down to our littlies starting their hockey careers in U7’s. We continued on from last season with mismatched team numbers in divisions so byes were part of the draw in some age divisions. This continued to allow a more competitive competition with club teams in the division suited for their ability.

Junior Turf

This year a change to our junior turf structure saw BWHA add a 4th division to JT with JT4. This has allowed more girls to get turf hockey experience and development opportunities for players.

Also the 13T competition graded 12 teams this year, so we were able to split into 2 divisions, hence 13T1 and 13T2 were formed from the beginning. This gave the age group a more accurate competition for the skill ability.

Grass

With the changes of the JT and 13T structures this year, we did see a small number of grass teams opt out of the Downey Park comp this year, however it did make it easier for the draw as all DP fields were used without the girls needing to use the Rasey Park fields. This allowed for RP to be utilized completely for the U9 & U7 competition which had increased numbers.

DP Grand Final day was a day of Joint Premierships, again showing the depth and consistency of the standard of hockey played.

Junior Umpiring

Without umpires, we do not have hockey games, and one of the most important ways to support the future of our game is to provide a strong & supportive system of umpiring development.

This year BWHA provided umpires with mentoring, development and assistance, and we saw many young umpires badged through this exposure. BWHA were again well represented at all State Championships with all umpires doing very well.

U11 SOUTHERN CROSS TOURNAMENT

Held on Sunday August 5th, this was again a successful competition hosted by the BWHA Junior Committee and BHA Juniors. A wonderful spectacle of hockey for the South East Associations youngest representatives. A wonderful opportunity to start their representative career from U11 and aspire for greatness with a high level competition playing environment.

Thank you to the many helpers who supported the Junior Committee in delivering a hugely successful day of hockey for the U11 girls of SEQ.

JUNIOR COMMITTEE

Again this year we were a group of 4 volunteers, who met when able, mostly Saturday mornings at DP and before BWHA Council meetings, however general day to day business was managed very successfully, through email and phone communication.

Each Saturday morning on a rotational basis, Junior Committee provided a presence at Downey Park, to ensure the environment of positivity, for players, umpires and supporters alike, to enjoy watching Junior Sport. This was done with the Club Roster duty, a successful partnership of clubs and Junior Committee for the administrative side of DP games to be completed.

Again thank you to the Junior Clubs of BWHA for their part in completing their Cub Roster duties.

The Junior Committee representatives share a common goal of commitment to the continued growth of Junior Girls Hockey in Brisbane. In consultation with BWHA Management Committee, the Junior Committee endeavor to provide quick, positive and appropriate decisions or guidance, to offer all players, teams and clubs, the best outcomes to concerns or requests.

Thank you to the BWHA Management Committee for the opportunity to work as a Junior Committee group, to focus on Junior Girls Hockey.

The depreciable amount of all fixed assets are depreciated over their useful lives commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.
