Last month, we celebrated nurses across the system in honor of National Nurses’ Week.

At Northwest Hospital, the celebration was themed “Not All Superheroes Wear Capes.” Gladys Cox was named Unit Clerk of the Year, Shalena Reeves was named Tech of the Year, and Epimaco “Jeune” De Guia, Jr., R.N., was named Nurse of the Year.

At Carroll Hospital, the theme was “Nurses Every Day Touching Lives.” The weeklong festivities included the Best of the Best Nursing Awards banquet and a Nurses Week SPIRIT photo. April Campbell, R.N., was named the 2016 Best of the Best Nursing Award winner.

Sinai Hospital’s theme was “Nurses on Call With Care” with an ice cream social kicking off the week. Sandra Levy, R.N., was named Sinai’s Nurse of the Year.

At Levindale, nurses took an interactive “Journey Through Nursing.” They explored the unique components of each specialty area through a weeklong scavenger hunt incorporating the nursing process. An interdepartmental educational fair allowed nurses to take a “journey through” other areas to better understand how each department contributes to our overall success.

When LifeBridge Health and Carroll Hospital joined together in 2015, it was, in part, because we had similar values and passion for the communities we serve. The wording for LifeBridge Health’s ICART and Carroll’s SPIRIT values is closely matched—we both have Innovation, Respect and Teamwork as main values.

We’re excited to have blended the behaviors from ICART and SPIRIT into one value set for the entire organization. Starting July 1, all of LifeBridge Health will adopt the easy-to-remember SPIRIT as the acronym for our values: Service, Performance, Innovation, Respect, Integrity and Teamwork.

As we continue to integrate our organizations, Carroll will adopt the core purpose statement: Caring for Our Communities Together. Carroll Hospital is also transitioning to Superstar of the Month instead of Associate of the Month and will join the LB Points recognition program and phase out its current program.

The entire system, 10,000 employees strong, will share these important reminders of what we strive for – to exceed our customers’ expectations; demonstrate accountability and achieve excellence; take the initiative to make things better; treat others with compassion and respect; act with integrity; and work together. Thanks for all you do to live our values each day.

We are all a part of the patient experience. Just like other acute care hospitals across the country, we participate in a patient survey process designed and regulated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This HCAHPS survey (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) measures patients’ perspectives of their hospital care.

Here are some things that we must do always:

• When you see a patient, family member or co-worker, greet them with a smile.

• If someone looks lost, ask how you can help.

• Treat patients the way you would want your loved ones to be treated, with compassion and respect.

• Remember that when patients and family members are here, they are often not at their best.

• Be mindful of personal conversations in public areas.

Our mission at Sinai is to maintain and improve health. One of our four key goals for achieving our mission is operational excellence, which includes providing a high level of customer service in every interaction. Together, it is our responsibility to give every patient the best care possible with an experience that exceeds their expectations.

We recently celebrated Nurses’ Week across the organization. At Northwest Hospital, the celebration was themed “Not All Superheroes Wear Capes” which is very fitting given the work our nurses do to change lives every day. Congratulations to Gladys Cox, Unit Clerk of the Year, Shalena Reeves, Tech of the Year, and Epimaco “Jeune” De Guia, Jr., R.N., Nurse of the Year. I love that we are recognizing these deserving individuals for the amazing work they do, but I also want to ensure that the contributions of all of our nurses are recognized.

Nurses play a critical role in delivering the most fundamental of services. Many of you provide care that

goes far beyond coming to work each day and doing your job. You comfort, advise, listen and serve as advocates for patients, providing the human touch in medical care. You give an arm to lean on, a shoulder to cry on, and much more. You go the extra mile, not to please a supervisor or even yourself, but to make someone else’s life the best it can be in that moment and going forward. In these ways, and many others, you play an integral role in our Quest to be the Best in quality and patient experience.

Although it’s impossible to quantify the impact our nurses make, your dedication can be felt by every patient and I am deeply proud of you. Thanks for all you do.

Healthier employees mean happier employees. I am a strong believer that if we model healthy behaviors for our communities, we can make the greatest impact on overall population wellness. We all know if you eat healthy, your kids will eat healthy. If you find joy in an active lifestyle, those around you will be inspired.

I’m often asked to talk about Carroll Hospital’s wellness program with other businesses and organizations in our community. LifeBridge Health has a history of investing in wellness as a system, going back decades with pioneering LifeBridge Health & Fitness. Today, we are impacting our communities in profound ways.

For Carroll Hospital, it’s especially gratifying to be formally acknowledged for our efforts, which is why I’m excited to share that we recently earned CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ re-accreditation by the CEO Roundtable on Cancer. In 2014, we were the first hospital in the state to receive this accreditation. I love that this accomplishment is a reflection of our commitment to our associates’ health and wellness.

And we once again received recognition from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence with four 2016 awards: Workplace Excellence, Health & Wellness Trailblazer, EcoLeadership and Diversity Champion.

I also want to congratulate Carroll Hospice for being named a 2016 Hospice Honors recipient by Deyta Analytics, a division of HEALTHCAREfirst, for providing the highest level of quality as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. Carroll Hospice exceeds most state and national benchmarks in quality and compassionate hospice care.

I am grateful for the effort and passion it takes to earn these types of recognition. It allows others to see what we already know to be true: LifeBridge Health is committed to continuing this journey of lifelong health, wellness and learning.

Wayne Smith, P.A., was recognized for never complaining and instead offering thoughtful solutions and suggestions. During a time of transition, he played a pivotal role offering guidance, working extra shifts and showing a great deal of dedication. In addition, he is an excellent clinician, intelligent, knowledgeable, available, and unfailingly kind.

Wayne is sought out as someone wanted at the bedside, especially if a patient is unstable or problems arise. He is a gift to the Levindale community and its patients. For these reasons, he has been selected as Levindale’s SuperStar!

Northwest’s SuperStar, Tanya Hines, supervisor of Northwest’s Emergency Department, is unfailingly polite, courteous and always willing to go the extra mile, no matter how complicated the issue.

One quality that sets her apart is her understanding of the concept of the

“internal customer”. She fulfills a multitude of roles with grace and good humor. She is indeed an inspiration to all who know and work with her. She shows continuous commitment to her team, customers and patients alike. Associates in the supply chain management department are essential to the hospital and patient care. They ensure all departments have the supplies needed to enhance the patient experience. That’s why distribution technician Roy Jackson’s recent assistance with linen services in the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine is being highlighted this month. His outstanding efforts have earned him special recognition

as Carroll Hospital’s May Associate of the Month.

Roy was instrumental in implementing linen services at the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. He listened to feedback from patients and wound care associates and offered solutions to meet everyone’s needs. When scrub pants were needed for patients in the department, he informed staff how to gain access to the hospital’s scrub dispensing system.

In addition, he follows up with wound care associates frequently to ensure their linen supplies are adequately stocked, and he has even checked the department’s hampers to verify all soiled linens have been removed to avoid disruption in services.

“Roy is a dedicated associate who always goes above and beyond to ensure departments have their needed supplies. Associates feel confident that when he is aware of a concern, he will do everything he can to address it to ensure departments run efficiently,” says Michelle Bunty, director of supply chain management.

Carroll Hospital: Clinical Engineering

The clinical engineering department at Carroll Hospital maintains a variety of patient care equipment, including diagnostic imaging equipment and

patient monitors as well as lab and audio/visual equipment. The team works closely with all departments to help select, install and set up new equipment as well as provide safety checks on rental/demo equipment before it is used in the hospital. Manager Wayne Jenkins has been with the department since it was created 36 years ago; he credits the department’s success to the great technicians who have worked there over the years, especially his current team! The team says their focus has always been “customer first,” and they take pride in the responsiveness and quality service they provide to their customers so they, in turn, can better serve the patients at Carroll.

LifeBridge Health: Development

LifeBridge Health Department of Development team members love what they do! Led by vice president Julie Cox, this team of 16 is based at the

Bare Hills Business Center with satellite offices on the Sinai and Northwest campuses. That means team members are often on the road.

Charged with raising funds across LifeBridge Health, their efforts are focused on working with patients, families, board members, physicians, corporations, foundations and government funders, all with the goal of attracting charitable support for LifeBridge Health programs and services. Among their many responsibilities, the development team organizes fundraising events, direct mail, capital and employee giving campaigns. They

Levindale and Pikesville: Adult Day Services

As people get older and may need some extra help and compassion, many families turn to the Adult Day Services teams at Levindale and Pikesville.

Staff members at both centers know how they would want their elderly loved ones cared for, and they make sure that they go the extra mile, or ten. The goals: to help participants avoid moving into long-term

care while giving families and caregivers the reassurance that their loved ones are being well cared for.

Programs are designed for physically frail seniors to socialize and receive individualized rehabilitation and medication therapy. They are especially geared toward seniors who have complex medical needs such as diabetes, hypertension and post-stroke disabilities, and those with health problems such as dementia, confusion and Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to nursing care, activity specialists stir participants’ imaginations and spirits with arts and crafts, music, cooking classes, exercise sessions, movies, discussion groups, live entertainment and trips into the community.

The Levindale and Pikesville Adult Day Services staff also includes the bus drivers, who make sure that participants are picked up and then dropped off at their front doors after a wonderful day of laughter, learning and friendship.

Support the Get in the Game CampaignThe 2016 Get in the Game campaign is right around the corner! Help us kick off our campaign with special events at Sinai and Northwest hospitals and Levindale on July 14 and at Carroll Hospital on July 19.

The 2015 Employee Giving Campaign was a great success. Collectively, LifeBridge Health employees contributed more than $200,000 to LifeBridge Health and the United Way. Contributions supported various programs at LifeBridge Health including the Community Initiatives program at Sinai Hospital, the Domestic Violence (DOVE) program at Northwest Hospital, Pikesville Adult Day Services, Hackerman-Patz House, the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute Patient Assistance Fund, the Dove House Inpatient Hospice at Carroll Hospital, the Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center, the Jennifer Gandel Kachura Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and much more.

This year, the Get in the Game campaign includes all LifeBridge Health entities. You’ll be receiving pledge forms in the coming weeks from your department’s team captain. Complete your form and you can either submit it to your team captain, to the cashier at Sinai, Northwest or Carroll hospitals or by interoffice mail to the development office. You can also make a one-time gift by credit card by visiting www.lifebridgehealth.org/getinthegame. Employees who make a gift of $10 or more by kickoff will be entered to win a PTO day.

Stay tuned for more information about events and prizes for your participation in the campaign. Our goal is participation by every employee because every dollar counts! Your tax-deductible gift to the campaign supports our purpose of caring for our communities together and will complement your workday efforts to place the patients and their families at the center of all we do.

Patient Experience Corner

Tip of the Month: AIDET What is AIDET? Five behaviors to use in every patient and staff interaction to anticipate, meet and exceed expectations of patients, co-workers and visitors. The use of AIDET is a national best practice and is a way we can ensure consistent communication; prevent misunderstandings; increase confidence; save time; increase compliance; improve patient perception of care; and connect to purpose. It’s already in use at various LifeBridge Health entities and is being rolled out system-wide.

AIDET stands for: Acknowledge; Introduce; Duration; Explanation; Thank you

Acknowledge — Greet people with a smile, make eye contact, and use their names if you know them.

• “Good morning/afternoon, Mrs. Smith. We want to make your visit as convenient as possible. Would you please take a moment to confirm that we have your most current information?”

Introduce — Introduce yourself to others politely. Tell them who you are and how you are going to help them. Escort people where they need to go rather than pointing or giving directions.

• “My name is Susan and I will be conducting your test today. I am a certified ultra sonographer and I do about six of these procedures a day. Do you have any questions for me?”

Duration — Keep in touch to ease waiting times. Let others know if there is a delay and how long it will be. Make it better and apply service recovery methods when necessary.

• “Dr. Heart had to attend an emergency. He was concerned about you and wanted you to know that it may be 30 minutes before he can see you. Are you able to wait or would you like me to schedule an appointment for tomorrow?”

Explanation — Explain, in language the patient will be comfortable with, what will happen during his/her exam, procedure or appointment. Ask the patient if he /she has questions or if there is anything else you can do.

• “The test takes about 30 minutes. The first step is drink this solution and then we’ll have you wait 20 minutes before we take a blood sample. Would you like to read while you wait?”

Thank You — Thank the patient. Foster an attitude of gratitude. Thank people for entrusting us with their care.

• “Thank you for using your call button. Is there anything else I can do for you? I have the time.”

Carroll Hospital recently earned CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ re-accreditation by the CEO Roundtable on Cancer for maintaining a strong commitment to the health of its employees and satisfying the latest, comprehensive requirements of the Gold Standard. Carroll Hospital is one of only two hospitals in the state to receive this accreditation.

The hospital earned re-accreditation following an extensive evaluation to ensure it continued to satisfy the CEO Cancer Gold Standard’s specific requirements in corporate culture and health benefits such as established policies and programs to: reduce cancer risk by prohibiting tobacco use and supporting tobacco cessation efforts; promote physical activity, healthy nutrition and weight management; provide health insurance options that include detecting cancer at its earliest stages, access to quality care, and participation in clinical trials; promote employee awareness of these initiatives; and support the needs of cancer survivors in the workplace.

Carroll Hospital has a wealth of programs and services to assist its employees and community residents in adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyles. This includes wellness events, health screenings, health navigation services and more. Through these programs and services, Carroll Hospital is helping to prevent cancer among its employees and the community while also reducing people’s risk of developing other conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

“At Carroll Hospital we are dedicated to not only helping people when they are sick but also helping them to stay well. That’s why we are committed to providing our staff with the programs, services and resources they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which ultimately will help them in their personal and professional lives,” says Leslie Simmons, president of Carroll Hospital.

InforNow Brings Harmonization to LifeBridge Health“The InforNow project is about harmonization,” explains Carol Heath, IS director of Financial & Administrative Systems at LifeBridge Health. “To be the best that we can be, we need all of our facilities to be singing the same song in harmony.”

Infor, formerly known as Lawson, aims to improve the company’s alignment, connectivity and insight, so that LifeBridge Health is better positioned for success, and eventually able to operate administratively as one unified health system. Over the next two years, LifeBridge Health employees will see big changes. The InforNow project will transform the integration, planning, tracking and management of LifeBridge Health’s vital assets, including people, supplies and clinical data, relationships and financial resources.

The InforNow project is in full swing in the Finance (Accounting, Payroll and Accounts Payable), Supply Chain Management and Human Resources divisions.

“InforNow will bring legacy LifeBridge Health and Carroll onto the same Infor platform and provide one cohesive financial and human resource system for all of LifeBridge,” Nancy Kane, vice president of Financial Reporting explains. “It will provide improved financial reporting and accessibility to management.”

“We will be implementing new features such as Contract Manager, which provides greater visibility and control for all of LifeBridge Health’s supply contracts and Requisition Center new purchase requisitioning tool,” Terrence Carney, vice president of Supply Chain Management at LifeBridge Health says.

“And, as Carroll Hospital moves to Infor10, their team will implement Mobile Supply Chain, which incorporates bar code technology in the inventory, replenishment and receiving functions,” he continues.

As the InforNow project unfolds employees will see more opportunities to access and complete important forms, Open Enrollment, etc., through employee self-service, which will be gaining more and more functionality.

This year Open Enrollment for all of LifeBridge Health will be held from Oct. 17 through Oct. 31. It will be an active enrollment, performed through a new online self-service module.

“Everyone who wants to carry benefits in 2017 will be required to complete the enrollment process in self-service. We will have computer labs available, with HR support, to help employees through the process,” says Tracey Ellison, MS, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, vice president of human resources at Carroll Hospital.

Heath, Kane, Carney and Ellison all echo that there are many more exciting changes to come. Stay tuned for more details!

Carroll Hospice: A 2016 Hospice Honors RecipientCarroll Hospice recently received the 2016 Hospice Honors award. Established by Deyta Analytics, the prestigious award recognizes hospices that continuously provide the highest level of quality care as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. To earn this award, Carroll Hospice exceeded the national benchmark on 20 out of 24 quality indicator measures on the Hospice CAHPS survey administered by Deyta Analytics. The survey consisted of 24 quality measures focused on the responses of patients and caregivers on their willingness to recommend Carroll Hospice to others.

“I am extremely proud of this accomplishment. It’s another testament to the extraordinary care our hospice staff provides,” says Regina Bodnar, executive director of Carroll Hospice. “Our staff is committed to providing compassionate end-of-life care to our patients and outstanding support to their family members during their time of need.”

The Hope for Henry Foundation and the Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai recently announced an exciting new partnership, launching their collaboration with a superhero extravaganza.

Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Captain Amer-ica and the Flash are just some of the superheroes who swooped in for the Lenny “Batman” Robinson Hope for Henry Program kick-off party held at the Children’s Hospi-tal in May.

“On behalf of the kids and families at the Samuelson Chil-dren’s Hospital, we are so grateful to the Hope for Henry Foundation for their extraordinary generosity and dedica-tion,” says Aziza Shad, M.D., the Ellen W.P. Wasserman En-dowed Chair of the Samuelson Children’s Hospital and the director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

She adds, “The activities and events provided by the Hope for Henry Foundation give our children and families an opportunity for fun and laughter -- a reminder that they are still kids, not just kids facing serious illness.”

The Hope for Henry Foundation hosts innovative programs that entertain, reduce stress and empower children to be ac-tive participants in their own care. The foundation sponsors parties and events, and gives kids with cancer and other serious illnesses gifts that are especially chosen with their individualized interests in mind.

In addition, the Hope for Henry Foundation has a child life specialist at Sinai to provide comfort to kids and manage the Hope for Henry programs at the hospital. Child life special-ists are health care professionals, with training in childhood development, who work with children and families to sup-port them through the emotional and physical challenges, such as difficult tests and procedures, which often occur during a hospital stay or on-going illness.

“It continues to be my dream to create a lasting legacy of joy, fun and happiness in honor of my son, Henry Strongin Goldberg. He packed in a lot of laughing, dancing and mischief into seven years before a rare disease took his life

Superhero Celebration Held at the Children’s Hospital at Sinai

in 2002,” says Laurie Strongin, the founder of the Hope for Henry Foundation, along with Henry’s father, Allen. “He inspires me every day to remember the gift of family, friends and love, and to make sure other children and their own families can enjoy them as well.”

Sinai is one of several hospitals where Hope for Henry pro-vides programs. There is one unique difference, however, at Sinai. When superhero programs are put together there, Batman will not be part of the festivities in tribute to Lenny Robinson, who played Batman, and attended many of the foundation’s events before he died in a car accident in 2015.

Wear Orange Wednesday, and met the Oriole Bird. Congratulations to Shamira Kelch (right) who won tickets to an upcoming Orioles game at the event.
