Why Is Bicycle Safety So Important?

Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. The safest way to use your bike is for transportation, not play. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency de-partment because of bike injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries. Wear a bike helmet EVERY TIME YOU RIDE, even if you are going for a short ride.

Helmet On, Now What?Riding a bike that is the right size for you also help keeps you safe. When you are on your bicycle, stand straddling the top bar of your bike so that both feet are flat on the ground. There should be 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.6 centimeters) of space between you and the top bar. Here’s a safety checklist your mom or dad can help you do:Make sure your seat, handlebars, and wheels fit tightly. Check and oil your chain regularly. Check your brakes to be sure they work well and aren’t sticking. Check your tires to make sure they have enough air and the right amount of tire pressure.

Be Seen, Be Safe!Wearing bright clothes and putting reflectors on your bike also can help you stay safe. It helps other people on the road see you. And if they see you, that means they’re less likely to run into you. Daytime riding is the safest so try to avoid riding your bike at dusk and later.

You’ll also want to make sure that nothing will get caught in your bike chain, such as loose pant legs, backpack straps, or shoelaces. Wear the right shoes — sneakers — when you bike. Sandals, flip-flops, shoes with heels, and cleats won’t help you grip the pedals. And never go riding barefoot! Riding gloves may help you grip the handlebars — and make you look like a professional! But avoid wearing headphones because the music can distract you from noises around you, such as a car blow-ing its horn so you can get out of the way.

Road RulesIf you’re allowed to ride on the street, follow these road

rules:Always ride with your hands on the handlebars.

Always stop and check for traffic in both directions when leaving your driveway, an alley, or a curb.

Cross at intersections. When you pull out between parked cars, drivers can’t see you coming.

Walk your bike across busy intersections using the crosswalk and following traffic signals. Ride on the right-hand side of the street, so you travel in the same direction as cars do. Never ride against traffic.

Don’t ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open sud-denly. Stop at all stop signs and obey traffic (red) lights just as cars do.

Ride single-file on the street with friends. When passing other bikers or people on the street, al-ways pass to their left side, and call out “On your left!” so they know that you are coming.

Hand SignalsIt will also help to learn some hand signals. These are like turn signals and brake lights for bikers. It helps cars and trucks know what you will do next, so they don’t run into you.

MP REPORTfrom The Office of MP Gerald Soroka, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead

Conservatives’ Propose ‘Back to Work Bonus’ to Help Workers and Local Businesses

OTTAWA: Gerald Soroka, Member of Parlia-ment for Yellowhead, joined his Conservative colleagues in announcing a new proposal to improve the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) – called Back to Work Bonus. This plan would ensure that Canadians will no longer be put in a position where they will earn less money by working more.

“As our province moves forward with its re-opening plan, I’ve heard from many of my con-stituents wondering how the transition back to a more open local economy will affect them. I’ve listened to your concerns and expectations for the future, and I’m proud to say that Con-servatives have put forward a proposal that will help you get ahead. We are focused on getting workers and businesses in this community and across the country back on their feet.” MP So-roka stated.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Conserv-atives have been putting forward constructive solutions to fix the design flaws in the Liberals’ programs and help deliver better outcomes for Canadians. We are building on that success with the new Back to Work Bonus. We know helping workers and local businesses will drive Canada’s economic recovery.

Under our Conservative plan, Canadians who lost their jobs through no fault of their own dur-ing the pandemic will continue to receive their full $2,000 CERB. In addition, as businesses reopen, workers who make between $1,000 and $5,000 per month would qualify for a CERB top-up that would be gradually phased

out by 50 cents for every extra dollar earned over the $1,000 threshold.

For a part-time server making $2,000 per month, the Back to Work Bonus would result in a top-up of $1,500, for a total monthly income of $3,500.

“Our plan is flexible and generous because Conservatives believe it should always pay to work,” MP Soroka said. “After all this country has been through, Canadians should not be penalized for picking up a shift or gradually re-turning to their job as their employer reopens. We’re going to keep working to get all Can-adians the help they need.”

“I hope the government will listen to Conserv-atives’ and implement these much-needed changes.”

I am proud to announce that the Alberta Gov-ernment will be doubling its funding towards the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program as part of Alberta’s economic recovery plan. This grant program will insure an additional $50 mil-lion towards critical infrastructure such as bridges, roads and community airports across smaller mu-nicipalities over the remainder of 2020. This infra-structure boost will also help to provide over 475 jobs across the province with as many as 70 differ-ent projects kicking off. The STIP grants funding is awarded in four categories: improvements to lo-cal bridges; community airports; resource roads for industrial use; and local municipal initiatives. These are cost-shared projects, with the province covering up to 75 per cent of the eligible cost and will be awarded based on initiatives identified by municipalities.

Our government is also investing $150 million in water infrastructure grants that will support 55 water and wastewater improvement projects and approximately 1,300 jobs. These water infrastruc-ture grants support improvements to water supply and treatment facilities, and upgrades to wastew-ater services, including lagoons, berms and sew-age treatment. In particular the County of Brazeau will be seeing long awaited improvements to the wastewater lagoon at our local water treatment plant.

This week, several new bills were introduced into the Legislature to help make our commun-ities safer places to live. Bill 25, the Protecting Alberta Industry from Theft Act, 2020, takes im-portant steps to combat metal theft. If passed, this bill will require scrap metal dealers to report all transactions involving commonly stolen met-als and items, such as catalytic converters, to law enforcement. Thieves terrorize property and busi-ness owners by trespassing and stealing materi-als such as copper wire and industrial batteries,

and frequently damage and interfere with critical systems like electrical lines, telecommunications networks and transportation infrastructure. Our government is taking action to protect the safety and property of our community. Finally, I am pleased to share that our govern-ment is upholding its commitments to Albertans and protecting choice within Alberta’s robust and diverse education system. This week, the Choice in Education Act passed third reading in the Legis-lature. This bill will amend the Education Act to af-firm that parents have the right to choose the kind of education they feel is best for their children, and it will strengthen Alberta’s successful his-tory of education choice, including public schools, Francophone schools, charter schools, and home education. This legislation also expands options for parents to deliver home education for their chil-dren, and will allow charter schools to be estab-lished with a focus on vocation-based education. Our government believes that parents know what is best for their children, and this bill creates more choice for parents on this important issue.
